I strongly believed it is God's will that prevails! Wintley definitely did not plan out the result to be so overwhelming. All can clearly see it is His Holy Spirit which touches everyone's heart & soul, there & now. Except for those, that only have a selfish heart & devious mind would think otherwise to gain attention & self-popularity by opposing so. God bless you & have grace on your poor soul when your judgement comes. Have humility & love for others before saying things which "condemns" yo
I heard this song thousands of times but I can't stop listening to this guy sing it. Why do I have to cry like a baby every time he sings it?? I guess the passion makes all the difference.
I think Mr. Phipp's music theory and music history is spotty at best. The pentatonic scale dates back to ancient China and perhaps beyond. If you play Amazing Grace starting on C# you get the tune on the black keys. Start the tune on C, you get the tune on all white keys. Start the tune on E, you get the tunes on both black and white keys. The pentatonic scale is common to Asia, Celtic, Appalachian and Magyar cultures. It's been around forever.
O sweetie I'm so sorry that u were subjected to so many negative close minded prejudgemental (prejudice) folks. Its just a video! Negative comments in this regard is so outta context. Look at the congregation. People need 2 get a life! Its a great piece of history, and I for one thank you. I just learned something 2day that I didn't know yesterday. Thank you! Not to mention that he has a beautiful set of pipes! Great singer. Keeping it positive! Great job!
I ran right to my piano. I know the pentatonic scale and thought the five black keys resembled Asian music!! Never made the connection to Negro spiritual music. Wow. Well done and a fantastic rendition. Really moving and beautiful.
Actually the tune came along many years after the poem was written and published. Newton never set it to music (that anyone knows). PBS did a special that presents the theory that the melody was a chant heard on a slave ship but that has never been verified.
I had no idea about the history regarding the black notes on the piano.....such an interesting video & what a phenomenal Singer this man is......so moving, I cried!
This song speaks to the innermost part of my spirit, my whole being!!!!! God is so awesome to allow this man to touch so many lives with the wisdom He's placed inside of him. The blessings of Abraham has overtaken you Mr. Phipps, and ran you over. Continue blessings to you and your family. Thank you Lord for this life.
After three minutes I thought I had heard the story and I was about to look for something else. But that guy just kept on talking and he caught me. I couldn't stop. I had to watch it all.
You are so weird people - So much hate, so much grief. I'm from eastern Europe - and we have a REALLY difficult history, but this is... madness. People screaming 'yeah - we should hate them, they stole from us a song'... What is that??
When I found out that John Newton was a slave trader, and even though he repented and became a preacher, I could not sing Amazing Grace, it broke my heart what he did to the slaves. But after listening what Wintley Phipps had to say about Newton and his song, I can now again sing Amazing Grace. He is an amazing speaker and singer. We are all sinners, in need of Jesus Christ our redeemer.
TQ for sharing this video. I have never heard of Wintley Phipp nor his ministry before. But MAN!!! What a voice!! I've heard quite a few renditions of this hymn of course but this is by far the most moving. Thank you.
This has long been my favorite song ~ and I've loved the history behind it: the song arose from John Newton's spiritual transformation and redemption. He WAS lost. He became found.
That said, I've never heard it sung like this.
I love Wintley Phipps. I've never met him. But I love him!
Thank you for this. For every single second of it.

The Lord works His loving, mighty work --- through a poor, unknown slave years and years ago, through the converted heart of a wicked slave ship captain, centuries later through Wintley Phillips, and then through hoover4000....
Praise Him for His Grace and His Love poured out to us through Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit!
Maravilhosa, sou calvinista e amo essa canção muitos conhecem aqui no Brasil, mas poucos conhecem a história de coragem de John Newton a graça se Deus se mostrou a ele com poder. Glória a Deus!
Songs from the heart of hearts like this one and when sang from the spirit like Phipps did, will always be timeless. We will sing these same songs in heaven too. I hope you will be there.

The "slaves" were actually kidnapping victims and it would be more fitting and respectful to refer to them as captives or enslaved Africans. God bless-what an amazing video.
Amen, praise b to da highest God, m soooo bless in da Scholl lab... Whn m listen to I cn feel da spirit of my Father (GOD)... I jst cn imagine hw grate hz Grace is too us... Thumbs up 2 MR Newton
I'm sitting in a public library I want to worship, clap, cry, shout. His voice is so anointed and majestically authorative, with a depth and rich resonance. As he began the chant before the words I knew (revelation) that God had done mighty things through a vile sinner who repented and those he sinned against and brought salvation out of it. Not just for them, but for all who call upon the name of the Lord. What mighty things has my Lord wrought for His glory? Just listen!

I don't know what to feel. Too feel happy, sad, angry. But this is just amazing, the history, the love behind it but also the hate and the agony the slaves went through. I just can't describe my feelings! And i actually cried when he said, "Words 'John Newton' Melody 'Unknown'" I don't know why i cried but to hear that it just makes you think how many slaves really suffered?!
This is one of the greatest hymn stories I have ever heard. Along with the story of "It is well" by Horatio Spafford, these are wonderful stories! It gives the hymns new meaning when you know the stories behind their inception. Thank you for posting!
This was SO interesting and moving! I had no idea of the "black notes" history. And to hear Mr. Phipps sing Amazing Grace as the "west African sorrow chant" brought even more power to the song! Wow!
@HisDotr2 - I've played piano for almost 40 years and been a believer too and never knew about the the black keys...this video was played at a Celebrate Recovery meeting I attended last night and moved all of us...
This is awesome. I believe this is the best male singing voice I've heard in my life time. Truly a special gift from the Most High God. The voice of an Angel!
@edavisdavis What evidence do you have of such a claim? "Probably"? Why "probably"? This is a shameful act of historical revisionism, done to tickle this sick person's afrocentric worldview. He's concocted a baseless event to justify his own regard for the song. His claim should be mocked. And don't say I've dragged race into it. He dragged race into it, when he implicitly accredited a whole group of people for the tune of a song, as far as we know they had nothing to do with writing or singing.
I have heard him sing this many times and each time, I cry. I visited the slave castles of Ghana and heard the lapping of thewaves on the shoreline. I could just hear the voices of thepeople as they were pushed and prodded onto an unknown ship bound for an unknown land. That is imbedded in my mind. How powerful!!!
Just listened to William Coopers broadcast entitled "There is a God". At the end of the broadcast he played Amazing grace, typed the title and found this video, very glad I did. Amazing stuff indeed.
"I believe God wanted that song written just the way it was written, just so that we would be reminded that as Christians whether black or white, free or bonded, in His eyes we are connected, we are connected, we are connected by God's amazing grace."
This is one of the most powerful spiritual videos on YouTube. This song is still the most anointed song ever put to paper - how could there possibly be 218 people that posted they did not like it???????
@ArticleTen The President has done nothing of the sort. It's the folks that have a problem with seeing a black man in the highest office of the land that has fanned the flames of racial hatred, not President Obama. You need to check yourself.
Terrific video.. Prison & jail ministries do so much good & spreading of God's word... I've recommended this video on Facebook & Twitter many times. God bless ALL & keep studying the Holy Bible~! AMEN~!
How great is life, knowing that we have Gods Amazing Grace guiding our walk, every step of the way. A beautiful song, Sung threw the voice of a living Angle.
THIS SHOWS THAT GOD HAS GIVEN EVERYONE A GIFT AND A TALENT! PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD IN A NEW ATHLETIC CLOTHING LINE AND SHOP AT 2 HAVE FAITH.COM THANKS GUYS!
Grace saves, grace keeps us away from sin, and keeps sin away from us. the graceless ones run after sins. The funniest thing is that the grace is of our Lord Jesus Christ.
hover, some folks just have to find a racist message in everything. Don't sweat it. They'll get or they won't. If they don't it's their loss.
Thanks for this all all the other Gaither stuff you post. I'm a huge Gaither fan and I don't think there is another Gaither source outside the Gaither organization.
i have studied church music ministry in a mainline denomination, and have never heard this brought forth. John Newton was troubled for years after his conversion about his part in the English slave trade. And Mr. Phipps is correct: the text is written by John Newton, but every hymnal will say "unknown" . Unknown to us, but not to G*d.
This video was AMAZING!!! I watch this video at least once a week because it moves me so much. He is GOD sent to spread this message!!! God Bless everyone!!!
To the guy talking about john newton the slave trader....He composed Amazing Grace after he repented and left the slave trade...The song is about God's unending mercy for even the most repugnant sinner. It's about redemption for himself. God bless us all, no matter the color or creed.
I don't think Mr. Phipps intended this to be a lesson in the history of slavery as much as he wants us all to know and experience the forgiveness and the "Amazing Grace" of God's love for ALL of us! Each "wretch" -ed one of us, regardless of race or profession, has access to God through the precious blood of His son, Jesus!
@angelsworking your missing the point....John Newton wrote the words but he probally heard the mourning chant over and over again because he was a slave trader. I would like to think that the melody haunted him day and night and he could not get it out of his mind and the guilt inspired his words. The unknown person or persons who maintained the singing of the chant were not wretches, Newton was. Either way it served as the rallying call for the abolishinist movement in Great Britian.
The very fact that he was a slave trader, and his encounter with His grace is what makes that song so dear . If he did it for him after all the atrocities he was responsible for. Than He can do it for me. Thank you for your grace and mercy Lord. Thank you for your presence
hoover4000, I get it. It is so much the grace of God for every soul that will accept his grace. This was most beautifully done. Thank you Mr. Phipps and also you hoover for posting. It has blessed me today. May God bless you both.
My Grandma passed away today while Amazing Grace was playing in her room. While I mourn her loss I'm incredibly glad that she is in heaven with Our Savior!
On another note, Mr. Phipps spoke at my high school chapel a year or two ago, and he was definitely the best, and most moving speaker during my four years there.
So informative and inspiring! To God be the praise. Over the weekend my church Faith Chapel FBH Gastonia, NC honored our Pastor & Family w/a snow globe that plays this song. The Holy Spirit allowed me to find this site because I wasn't looking for it, but now I will definitely be sending this to them to view as well. May God richly bless you for sharing this post and the young man ministering in song.
Hoover, I have been singing this song (My all time Favorite) ever since I can remember talking. My sincere thanks for sharing this incredible story which I have shared with hundreds myself!!! God Bless You !!!!
WOW! Listening to this background and the beautiful song reminds me of amazing grace from an amazing God who turns the "world's" trash into his "treasures" . Thank you, Jesus!!
It is amazing the beauty that God can bring out of one's pain. John Newton had a revelation and repented of his ways. Out of that guilt and sorrow, God brought out "Amazing Grace".
Some see black and white so intently that they cant see the grey in between. We are all people and skin color matters not.The color of our skin is on the outside. It shouldnt effect what is beneath. And as a people we will not move any farther unless people can start to see beyond that which first meets our eyes.We must learn if we are to become a peacful world and one united team that we must see beyond the concealing veil that hides everything we seek.We must do this together.Thats the only way.
Praise be to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Romans 5: 20-21
20 Moreover the law entered, that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, Grace Did Much More Abound:
21That as sin has reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life By Jesus Christ Our Lord.

So.. even if the Music Rights belong to Black Slaves
That probably by this way they were expressing their Feelings because of Slavery....
Finally When John Newton found God..
It became a Christian Song....
But the soul of this song don't seem to be Christian..
The Melody is Great..and most possibly has nothing to do with Religion..

The fact that this song was written by a repentant former slave trader makes the lyrics all the more beautiful. Beautiful performance.

Thank God for Wintley Phipps. Obama has done so much to cause racial discontent in this country, yet men like Wintley continue to bring balance.

@ArticleTen The President has done nothing of the sort. It's the folks that have a problem with seeing a black man in the highest office of the land that has fanned the flames of racial hatred, not President Obama. You need to check yourself.

John Newton was a slave trader but gave up this occupation to become a minister and was against this trade. It was then that he wrote the song.

Grace saves, grace keeps us away from sin, and keeps sin away from us. the graceless ones run after sins. The funniest thing is that the grace is of our Lord Jesus Christ.

John Newton wrote the words he did not compose the tune .The tune is a old Scottish tune he wrote the song to it Fair Ellen of kirkconnell

hover, some folks just have to find a racist message in everything.

To the guy talking about john newton the slave trader....He composed Amazing Grace after he repented and left the slave trade...The song is about God's unending mercy for even the most repugnant sinner. It's about redemption for himself. God bless us all, no matter the color or creed.

The way I feel this tune... i'm pretty certain I'm related to that slave named "unknown".
elkabong2k 9 months ago
I don't think Mr. Phipps intended this to be a lesson in the history of slavery as much as he wants us all to know and experience the forgiveness and the "Amazing Grace" of God's love for ALL of us! Each "wretch" -ed one of us, regardless of race or profession, has access to God through the precious blood of His son, Jesus!
4bella63 9 months ago
@angelsworking your missing the point....John Newton wrote the words but he probally heard the mourning chant over and over again because he was a slave trader. I would like to think that the melody haunted him day and night and he could not get it out of his mind and the guilt inspired his words. The unknown person or persons who maintained the singing of the chant were not wretches, Newton was. Either way it served as the rallying call for the abolishinist movement in Great Britian.

"White spiritual" with black notes?
Pentatonic scales are simply the base of much folk music around the whole globe.
So it is in celtic infuenced music, which might have been the inspiration for John Newton, the composer of "Amazing Grace".
Newton made his fortune with trading slaves.

The very fact that he was a slave trader, and his encounter with His grace is what makes that song so dear . If he did it for him after all the atrocities he was responsible for. Than He can do it for me. Thank you for your grace and mercy Lord. Thank you for your presence
