  • is it legal to use shutter stock un licensed copy and copy it or do some changes on it ?

  • @SuperPhotoshopgeek If it's for fun there's no problem. But it is a violation to make a drawing based on a photo and claim it's your own work. Even though you've re-drawn it, and made some minor changes, it's still in violation. However, using a photo as reference is fine...Like inspiration...as long as you can't tell the two images are related, then you can say it's your own work.

  • why doesnt it snap smoothing in element 8.0?

  • how do you do this in element 8.0??

  • The brush trick is awesome. However, I am kind of annoyed that it deletes your brushes every time you create a "New" document. Is there a way to keep your brushes, or is it best to just "save" a Template and load that every time? (any one who knows feel free to answer)

    Thanks!

  • @globi227 Yea that annoys me too. You can save your brushes and make a custom pallet but you'll have to open that pallet every time you create a new doc. I also have a few templates set up that i use depending upon what i'm drawing.

  • @abstruseoni Thank you! I'll have to mess with the pallets. Which I guess aren't too bad. Save them for different types of projects. Painting, sketching, etc.

  • what programm did you use, im kind of a fan of art, and im thinking of buying a wacom myself too, any tips?

  • @TheDice0 I've had alot of questions like this, so I decided to add it in the video info. Hope it helps. Oh...and this is an adobe illustrator tutorial

  • What tablet do you use? I do sketch art and I want to venture into using a tablet, Of course price is an issue but I was just wondering about what you would reccomend for me?

    Cheers, Joss

  • @thewulf7 Hey Joss. I have a wacom graphire, a wacom bamboo, and a tablet pc. If you're starting out, just get a basic wacom tablet. I've found the size of the tablet doesn't matter much, i almost prefer a smaller one. And you won't notice a diff in pressure sensitivity between a $50 tablet and a $500 one. But if you have the cash, I love my tablet pc and you can find them fairly cheap now.

  • wacom bro ? cool learning !

  • How were you changing the width of your strokes when drawing? Is that just pressure sensitivity, or does the pen you are using have a brush attachment where you can use the pen in different ways, such as the edge of the nib etc. does that change the stroke?

  • oh the skull, this is ugly picture .... yuck

but your explanations are very informative

    thanks

  • whats a good large size file to do this on illustrator and photoshop?

  • @bonafye Not 100% sure what you mean...Anything you create in illustrator you can resize to whatever you want, but I usually start with a typical 8.5x11 paper size just so i have it for reference. Otherwise I draw all over the place in AI...on and off the canvas. In photoshop I'll start at 72dpi with about a 800px canvas for sketching, but I'll make it bigger and 300dpi before adding too much detail. 300dpi is what you need for a decent print. Hope that answers your question.

  • @abstruseoni it did, thanks man

  • Wonderful tutorial man! thanks alot

  • I didn't know that Nicholas Cage did youtube tutorials on graphics tablets! Great vid dude, thanks!

  • Hey great vid, I was just wondering, when the lines automatically smooths out, do you have to change anything in the settings? And is it possible to get that line smoothing on photoshop?

  • @Hakkastyle Glad you liked it. You can double click the brush tool (not the brush tip, but the actual brush tool) in illustrator to adjust it's smoothness and fidelity settings, but unfortunately this feature is not available in PS.

  • @abstruseoni can you use the smooth line brush setting in CS4?

  • @420TKO In illustrator CS4 yes....not in photoshop though

  • @abstruseoni do u actually need a tablet to use illustrator

  • @Vocs72 Not at all. You can do everything in illustrator without a tablet....a tablet is just a tool. And if you illustrate alot, then I would definitely recommend one. I use it all the time professionally and for fun.

  • @abstruseoni thank ya im trying to get one but i am also looking for a company to work for thats for graphics and all that I mostly do cd covers and im trying to learn to do posters and pic manipulations

  • @Hakkastyle

The reason it's smooth is because it's vector.

When you make a stroke it paints pixels to indicate what you did, and once you let go it changes it to vector.

Where PS paints pixels, small rectangles, illustrator uses math to create shapes, this is why you can stretch it as big as you want without losing quality.

  • Thank you! Very useful indeed.

  • I need one of those :D

  • what if I already have photoshop on my laptop, can I have it on borth or am I going to need 2 copies?

  • @mikesamillion27 Usually you need two copies. They require a serial each installation...but it's pretty easy to switch computers if you need to. Just click a deactivate button before installing it on the new comp. The only exception is if you buy a company version, which of course costs more, and lets you install on multiple computers.

  • @abstruseoni aww well that sucks :/ can I connect my laptop to it just do dual display?

  • @mikesamillion27 As long as your PC/video card supports it then yes you should be able to with no problem. I have a dual monitor setup. You might also try Art Rage. It's free and has most of the same drawing features/capability as photoshop...It just doesn't have as many advanced features, but you can't complain for a free app.

  • @mikesamillion27 Actually if you read Adobe's license agreement, you are allowed to have it on a laptop and desktop PC as long as you are only using one at any given time.

  • @CrapperCopter You're right! You can install it on both Work - Home or PC - Laptop as long as you don't run them both at the same time. Thanks Copter! Good to know...wish I had known it sooner, LOL

  • Thx ima download illustrator now! Ima big noob with my bamboo

  • Do you have to download extra stuff like Photoshop or does the tablet come with some software already?

  • @1Thunderfire It depends on what tablet you get...most come with free software like Art Rage...and some come with photoshop elements (which isn't the same as photoshop. Elements is meant for basic photo editing and not painting.) I believe you can download a trial version of photoshop for 30 days, but in the end you will have to buy it.

  • @abstruseoni intuos tablets come with coral painter

  • have you heard about the wacom bamboo CREATE table. what do you think about it.

what is your favorite tablet? or which ones are the ones taht are supposed to be better ones. thank you sorry for making too many questions :/

  • @diezdemo1 I haven't used the Create tablet, but it looks similar to the Bamboo Fun. Both have pen and multi-touch capability. I've used Graphire, Bamboo, Tablet PCs, and even a large Stylus...as far as I can tell, the larger the pad, the more you move your hand...Other than that, I can do just as much with a small tablet as i can with a $2,000 Stylus and they all feel about the same. I do like my Tablet PC though...it's nice to draw on the screen. And you can get cheap ones for $300ish

  • "Thats jsut look so evil". i laughed and everyone in my office were looking at me.

    Nice work.

  • Thank you, i just got a tablet for my laptop and i had no idea how to begin :D but now i do! awesome vid!

  • hey i just got my first graphics tab and im not very good with it would you be abled to do more videos like this as this helped alot =)

  • Wait, when you use a Graphics tablet you're supposed to draw using Adobe Illustrator or photoshop?

  • @Frostfeera You can use a tablet for both. Illustrator gives a much cleaner look and is used for making logos and crisp stock images. Photoshop has an airbrush/sketchy feel to it and is meant for paintings, rough drawings, and photo manipulation.

  • Are you using a tablet with no screen?

  • @KaptenHubbaBubba I'm using my toshiba tablet pc. But I also use a graphire 2 and a bamboo on my home and office PCs.

  • what kind of wacom are you using in this video?

  • @marilu191 In this vid I'm not actually using a wacom...I'm using my toshiba tablet pc. Which I would recommend if this is something you want to take seriously, and you can find decent tablet pcs for under $300 now. It won't be a powerful machine, but it will run photoshop and other programs with no prob. And I still use my wacom bamboo and even my graphire 2 on occassion.

  • How do you get the lines to adjust themselves??? please let me know...working on a project for my final and im having a hard time creating nicely curved lines. what i mean is when we draw a line or curve by hand its not always perfect,,, but your brush setting is fixing the lines. id really appreciate it.

  • @lzzyHD First I assume you're using Illustrator and not Photoshop. Double click on the brush tool in your tool bar, this should give you auto smoothing options. OR you can use the smooth tool...Just draw it over your jagged lines to smooth them out.

  • when i draw in the line i weak... and i want it to be better... help?

  • @robloxfanss I'm not sure what you mean by "weak". If it's not thick enough, double click on the Brush in the brushes panel (like in my video) and increase the size. If the line isn't smooth enough, double click the Brush Tool in the tools panel and change the settings OR use the smooth tool to smooth out your lines. Hope this helps

  • @abstruseoni i mean transparent...

  • @robloxfanss This could be many things...Your color might not be dark enough...your opacity could be turned down...your layer style or blending mode could be on lighten or color burn or something other than normal... it's hard to tell without seeing it.

  • this is my skull from shutterstock :D, well done

  • @yazidmasa Really?? lol Hope you don't mind me using it for the tutorial. I thought it was a cool skull

  • hooo i cant change the settings for my brushes its pressure ??right?/all i can click is the random......why is it?

  • @TheMeowmark You need your wacom drivers installed. Goto wacom.com and put in your tablet type and your OS to get the driver.

  • nice.

  • Thanks for this impressive video

  • its hard to draw with tablet? O_o

  • @xato909 i've become very comfortable with it, but it takes time and practice. Tablet PCs are much easier to get use to since you draw directly on the screen, but I can draw just as well with both

  • @abstruseoni i just bough bamboo pen tablet ^_^

its really weird to draw, without looking at your hand and your pencil xDD idk...

But im really exited to have that tablet, its so awesome . I hope I quickly get used to it.

    Thanks :D

  • @xato909 I got a tablet this year, and it's one of the best purchases I have made. It's a lot of fun, and you can extend beyond just art as well. I am positive you'll enjoy your purchase as much as I did, and continue to do so.

  • @xato909 Practice always makes perfect

  • whats the difference between photoshop and illustrator????

  • @Saladon89 ALOT....Photoshop (as the name suggests) is great for photo manipulations and touch-ups. It can be used to paint and most the brushes are very similar to airbrush painting. Illustrator is vector based and mainly used for creating logos and very clean graphics, though detailed illustrations are still possible.

They both share some of the same capabilities, but their tools, and the way they're used, are geared towards each program's purpose.

  • @abstruseoni and that the true..

  • jjjjjjjj..... graphic syndicate.....this is my syle very helpfull

  • The true is vector vs raster doesn't really matter because you can simply convert an raster to vector using a program called "Vector Magic" ... For the people that can't afford to buy Illustrator you can just use inkscape that is free . Other good free alternatives art / music programs are MyPaint , Gimp, Alchemy, Blender 3D, Scribus, LMMS ... and there are more for Winsows , Mac , Linux , and BSD ...

  • @maw88ify That's true and you mentioned several great alternatives. The main differences are the capabilities of the program you use to create your art (and the user of course). I'll also note that Illustrator CS5 has the capability to do live trace just like vector magic and possibly with more control. However, my video isn't really a comparison of vector vs pixel.

  • i cant select pressure and i have a wacom tablet! what should i do!!!

  • @1dmugger1 You need to install your wacom drivers. goto wacom.com and select your OS and your type of tablet.

  • @abstruseoni thanks dude! i appreciate it!

  • hey thanks alot man, i've been having trouble getting the right settings

  • I should download illustrator, it would be better for inking. Oh and, I like your voice.

  • I have a question, what are program are you drawing on? Also, I have a bamboo fun and it comes with photoshop 8.0 but I can get any picturesthat I've scanned or do anything but modify camera pictures.

  • @youkainoshi Hmm...I can't believe I didn't clarify that... I'm using Adobe Illustrator. And it sounds like you're using Photoshop Elements, which is not the same thing as Adobe Photoshop. Elements is like a toned down version of Photoshop specifically meant for basic photo touchups and used by alot of photographers, but it's limited in it's drawing capabilities. You might try ArtRage. It's free and geared towards drawing, but not as powerful as photoshop.

  • @abstruseoni Thanks!

  • i tried the wacom baboom, but its impossible to use for me, cause the pen is on your tabel and what happens is on the screen. So i sold it again. I did think about buying on of the cintiq (was that the name) where you can se what you are doing, just like when you are drawing on paper. I do illustrations as my work, but havent learn to use the pen :-(

  • @Learncountriescom If you've never used a tablet, it can be a awkward at first, but it's a good cheap place to start. If you have the extra money then i would recommend a tablet PC...they've become much more affordable. But if you want to go all out, then a cintiq is the way to go. Cintiq's have pen tilt and rotation as well as pressure which makes brushes more versatile. On the downside, they're not mobile, they're very expensive, and they're heavy.

  • @abstruseoni thanks for your answer. And thats pretty much some of the problems which i am a bit afraid of. It seems to me, that the technology for the cintiq is moving a bit slow, if you look at the downsides you mention (its not mobile, its very expensive and so on) so i am also afraid that, there will soon come a new technology recovery, not to long after i have invested in the Cintiq.

  • @Learncountriescom You're welcome. I'd look into tablet PCs like the TM2. That's my next gift to myself. It's not too expensive, it's lightweight like a notepad, and it's fairly powerful. If you REALLY want the tilt and rotation features, then spend thousands on a cintiq, but you'll want a Ergotron arm to hold it for you, and those aren't cheap either.

  • @abstruseoni I heard that where ever your pen is above the Tablet itself, that's where the curser is on the moniter. Is this true? this is the only thing I need to know before getting a Tablet.

  • @Learncountriescom Yes, your tablet will recognize the pen tip location while the pen is a couple inches off the surface.

  • ur line automaticly go to smooth after u make sharp edges and such. how do u do this? i use photoshop cs4

  • @mickboe1 I wish you could, but that feature isn't available in photoshop...it's illustrator only, and it does the smoothing by default.

and you can double click the brush tool in illustrator to edit how much it smooths your lines

  • @abstruseoni Okey thank you :) seems i need to get illustrator then :P

  • Great tutorial! Many thanks!

  • Its not good watching while waiting for a wacom tablet in the post.

  • @jayshiz haha same here

  • thats really interesting. ive never really used illistrator, ive always used PS. thanks for the vid, i'll be giving it a go =]

  • This is a really good video, but it seems like i can't get off the starting line with this program. I get the pen and beziers etc. - i just want to use the paintbrush and trace my original picture. But the brush replaces the lines i have just drawn with each next one every time, and it isnt giving me a smaller brush despite the stroke being set to 1. Also it keeps trying to select the layer with the original every time i select something new. Whats going wrong? Im such a dunce with vectors...

  • Great tutorial!

  • i set the brush size to 30 and it fills the whole screen, and at prush size 3 its still to big, why??:P

  • @0thekawasakiboy0 Scale your image way up by grabbing a corner and dragging outward while holding down ALT and SHIFT. Holding shift makes the image keep it's proportions and holding alt makes it scale from the center. Use the crop tool to change your canvas size. Also, if you're using cs4 or cs5, you can set your brush tip to just 1 with pressure on and it will still give you a smooth size variation.

  • That was very helpful man, thanks :)

  • I have a problem. I'm using a mac version of Illustrator CS5 (not sure if it matters) and when I got to make a new brush, I don't have all the settings. The only options I have in the pull down boxes are "Random" and "Fixed". Everything else is grayed out. Do you have any idea as to why that is?

    =^^= Nya

  • @RocketMeowth That generally means you don't have your tablet drivers installed or you're using the wrong ones for your operating system. I don't believe it makes a difference whether it's mac or win. And I assume you have a wacom tablet. Just goto their website. They have a section for downloading drivers. Enter in your tablet type and OS, then install the driver and restart photoshop.

  • @abstruseoni My pen pressure is already installed. I use it all the time in Photoshop CS5. That's why I'm so confused. And yes, I am using a Wacom Bamboo Fun.

    =^^= Nya

  • @RocketMeowth ohhhh I see....Me thinks ye has a cracked copy.. or maybe a bad install...but usually that can only happen when there's an issue with illustrator. I hate to say it, but I would recommend uninstalling illustrator and re-installing it...or getting a different version.

  • very helpful. thanks for the tips.

  • What is that website that you mentioned

  • @TheRealRoof shutterstock

  • Not bad thanks for the help.

  • i am confused, are you using photoshop? you keep saying "like photoshop" for comparison, but this program looks just like photoshop, anyway my question is does photoshop have that auto smooth feature shown at 2:45?

  • @phoenix9909 lol No, this tutorial is for Adobe Illustrator which IS very similar to Photoshop, except illustrator is geared towards vector art and very clean graphics. The auto smooth feature and custom pens can only be done with illustrator. Photoshop focuses more on photos (of course) and painting...primarily rasterized (or pixel based) artwork. I have another tutorial that explains how to set up your brushes with Photoshop if that's what you need. Hope this helps.

  • @abstruseoni Ah i understand now, thanks for the help I'll check out your photoshop tutorial, I'll be getting a wacom in a couple of days so i've been looking at some vids on wacom basics, your video really helps even if i don't have illustrator though.

  • I learned more from this 6 minute video than I have from countless hours on lynda.com. Thanks!

  • thanks for your help man i just got a bamboo table so this is great for me.

  • i wish i could draw :(

even when i do photomanipulation , i just find that it is important for me to learn how to draw .

  • @coldmemories1 Drawing, just like any skill, takes practice. Just study various techniques, try them out, and have fun with what you. If you can do that, then I promise you'll get much better than you thought you could.

  • @coldmemories1

Wanna learn to draw?..Just get yourself acopy of Betty Edwards' Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. You will be surprised how fast (in seven days) you will draw like u have drawn for ten years, It is magical!!

  • at the beginning i thought it was the youtube error message (an error ocurred, please try again later) lol

  • Thx bro for sharing. :)

  • he trips of psilocybe a lot.

  • Link to picture of skull picture plz

  • @NinjaLukeI Hey Ninja, I don't recall where I got the image, but you can do a quick google search or look on stock image websites. I'll note that it's illegal to trace a copyrighted image and sell it as you're own unless it is dramatically different. Tracing is meant for practice, training, and fun :)

  • @abstruseoni thats ok i found it on shutterstock becuase the # for the skull was under it

  • how come i cant change the random to pressure under the diameter. i can only have fixed and random. weird? can u help me?

  • @bolinsapark I'm 99% sure you don't have your drivers installed. More than likely you have a wacom tablet and need to get the correct drivers from their website. Or you have a tablet pc and need the generic wacom tablet driver.

  • Whenever i open a picture in Illustrator, i can't do shit

  • thanks dude! this was awesome

  • @!$@# video ... learn to make better

  • @Raneosa Learn to articulate your thoughts before posting comments, thank you.

  • use ctrl/apple + Z dammit!

  • @Nogardo ....huh?

  • @abstruseoni sorry, it's just you undo line by selecting it in the menu. Using the hotkey helps a lot in the long run

  • @Nogardo True, when I work I use every hot key I can, but you can't see hotkeys in a video tut. And I try to mention when I do use them. Plus when my tablet is in slate mode for drawing, it covers up my keyboard. But I assure you I know many keyboard shortcuts and set up several custom ones for quick canvas rotation and flipping.

  • Comment removed

  • what model tablet are you using?

  • @brooksmarshall I have a Toshiba Tecra M7 Tablet PC which is little old, but it still works great. You can find them on ebay for around $250 I think. But if you have the money, I would get a HP TM2. If you don't have much to spend or you're just getting started, I would recommend a wacom bamboo tablet. They're about $60 and they work just as well as a $5000 stylus (other than a stylus can have tilt and rotation...tablets can't)

  • @abstruseoni thanks man

  • Illustrator wont let me change the brush to pressure. Do you know how I can fix that?

  • @eliteprojensen If you have photoshop, test if you can set the pressure in there. If you can, then try to google the issue because I have no clue why one would work but not the other. However, If neither work, it's probably just because you don't have the proper drivers for your tablet.

Assuming it's a wacom tablet, just goto wacom.com and follow the steps for downloading drivers. If it's a tablet PC then you have to get the generic wacom pen driver for tablet PCs. Hope this helps.

  • @abstruseoni You are dead on! I needed to install the drivers. I have an older Wacom tablet I go from a friend with no install disk. I plugged it in and it worked fine except it wouldn't let me me adjust the pressure. Once I installed the drivers...BAM! It works fine. Cant thank you enough.

Do you have a website or some references to your work? Would really like to see some of your stuff.

  • @eliteprojensen 3 I have a portfolio but it's outdated and under construction. My face book page has some of my various work though. Just goto FB and search for RWGraphix

  • how many hours did it take you dude?

  • @inquestFLASH lol Maybe a couple hours. You loose track once you get in the groove. Just don't try to make every line perfect, there's art in imperfections.

  • How do you preserve line integrity around tight turns and stuff? Draw a spiral to see what i mean

  • @nemac23 Double click the pen tool. It gives you options to adjust how much it smooths the paths, if at all.

  • did you say shuttershock? trying to find the website, but i end up on shutterSTOCK... could you elaborate?

  • @didiodl Yea they use to be shuttershock, but they changed their name to shutterstock. that's why it redirects you. I'll see if I can make a note on the video. I'm also thinking about making a video about submitting EPS files and the proper format to do it in.

  • this might sound like a stupid question but is the bamboo pen same as the bamboo fun when it comes to drawing whats the difference someone please respond

  • @stacey2nelson Hey Stacey, I think the primary difference, is that the bamboo fun supports multi-touch...meaning you can use two fingers on the tablet surface to scale things....the original bamboo only supports the pen, not your touch.

  • NICE VIDEO

  • That skull is gonna give me nightmares.... for weeks. But anyway, nice drawing!

  • i cant select pressure only random and fixes at the brush settings

  • @SkietJ If pressure is greyed out, then you probably don't have the right wacom drivers installed. Goto Wacom.com and enter in your OS and Tablet info, then download and install the latest driver. Hope this helps

  • Thank you so much for this tutorial. I recently got a wacom, but when I went to ink my art, the lines weren't so great. This has cleared my confusion.

  • That was impressive, thanks for the tips!

  • Thanks man! This tutorial was great, even though I don't work with Ilustrator, I could easyly aply the same knowledge to Sketchbook Pro!

  • never mind I had to reinstall the drive, thanks!!

  • hey Bro, I have an Wacom bambo Tablet. I followed your steps and tried to change the the settings from random to pressure it was grayed out and would not allow me to select it. Any Ideas?

  • hey Bro, I have an Wacom bambo Tablet. I followed your steps and tried to change the the settings from random to pressure it was grayed out and would not allow me to select it. Any Ideas?

  • Goods stuff bro! Just bought my tablet last night... Can't wait to jump in!

  • Great video, given that I'm considering investing ££££s in Cintiq. May I ask what kind/specs of computer you are using?

Also, I completely agree with woodbuddies' comment (11 months ago).

  • @nagualdesign I use a Tecra M7 Tablet PC. They're not too expensive and they're powerful. I've used everything from small wacom tablets to Cintiqs and I've learned bigger doesn't mean better, it usually just means more expensive and heavier to hold. And you'll have to reposition your hand more. No noticable diff in pen pressure either. Though having rotation is nice. Thanks for the compliment. If you have ideas for tuts that no one has done, please let me know :)

  • So if i get this right.

When you draw a character or make a line-art with a tablet its best to use illustrator since it smooths out the lines?

Or is it possible to make smooths lines in photoshop? My lines always tend te be like _.._.._.._.._.. instead of _____.

  • Is it considered plagiarism when take a random pic like this on the internet ink it like you did and use it for your work ?

  • @TheSillyCloud It depends. In my case, it's just for a tutorial and I'm not making any money off their image or claiming it's my own. If you create a new image using parts from several pics or changed it so much that you can't recognize it as the original, then you should be safe. I never sell anything that's not 100% my own though I have used google images before in ads, but I make them into something new. Always be cautious using copyrighted images.

  • How you delete that shutterstock watermark on 0:38?

  • @Spearmintyify I don't think I removed the shutterstock watermark, BUT if you were to do it, you would use photoshop. Most watermarks are a logo with a very low opacity. So if you perfectly re-create the logo, or find a crisp clean copy of the logo, you can overlap it onto the image to make a perfect selection of the watermark. then adjust the brightness/contract, or curves, or levels to make it fade. It can be a tedeous process though.
