Because the parties switched after the Civil War. The south was the richer area of the country because they had cheap (really cheap) labor to increase their income. As a result, they could afford to pay higher taxes, and so, supported the Democratic Party. But in the mid 1900s, democrats started being the party of integration rather than supporting segregation like they always had. So the Republicans became the racist party and the Democrats became the anti-racist party.

Lincoln DID want to free the slaves but not at the cost of civil war. The Abolitionist Movement wanted to end slavery immediately even if it meant bloodily. John Brown even gave his life in a attempt to free slaves and have them rise up against the south. His action is what sparked the war. The reason of the secession of the south was well before lincoln was inaugurated president. The antebellum period started with the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which eventually led up to the civil war. In fact, it was about preserving the union and then later on, it turned to the emancipation of slavery. You forget that it was democrats; not republicans, that wanted slavery expanded.

The fact is, the south wanted the right to perpetuate centuries of kidnapping, forced labor and human trafficking and was willing to commit the worst crime of treason to defend it. It's not as if there was an uproar in the south over the Guano Islands Act of 1856. Legislation over slavery, however, sparked quite a bit of furor.

I agree with your conclusion, but your history is wrong. Abe, as well as many northerners, believed it was wrong to keep men in slavery. The reason Lincons freeing of the slaves is a moot point is simply because the old democratic party is gone. By the time FDR came around it was an entirely different idealogy (which actually stole it's ideas from the Populist Third Party). Lincon is more of a modern democrat than a republican.

And slaves in the South were generally treated better than migrant workers in the North (regardless of race). Personally, I think chaos is exactly what the world needs -- now more than ever. Because the parties switched after the Civil War. The south was the richer area of the country because they had cheap (really cheap) labor to increase their income. As a result, they could afford to pay higher taxes, and so, supported the Democratic Party. But in the mid 1900s, democrats started being the party of integration rather than supporting segregation like they always had. So the Republicans became the racist party and the Democrats became the anti-racist party.

John Brown even gave his life in a attempt to free slaves and have them rise up against the south. His action is what sparked the war. The reason of the secession of the south was well before lincoln was inaugurated president. The antebellum period started with the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which eventually led up to the civil war. In fact, it was about preserving the union and then later on, it turned to the emancipation of slavery. You forget that it was democrats; not republicans, that wanted slavery expanded.

I live in Los Angeles and on average there are nine abortion clinics in every predominately black/hispanic neighborhood for every one in predominately white ones. WHo do you think they are trying to sell the idea too?

You cut taxes for the rich because the top 1% pays 40% of all income taxes, (look it up) they pay to much already. It stimulates growth, investment and creates jobs. Anyone who thinks we are "freeing the Iraqi people" should do a body count and assess their level of freedom in addition to the crumbled Iraqi infrastructure. Granted, 100 years from now, the Iraqi people will probably be better off under Democracy, I suppose, but it's a tough case to make to the Iraqi people of this generation.

The fact is, the south wanted the right to perpetuate centuries of kidnapping, forced labor and human trafficking and was willing to commit the worst crime of treason to defend it. It's not as if there was an uproar in the south over the Guano Islands Act of 1856. Legislation over slavery, however, sparked quite a bit of furor.

it would have been a logistics nightmare to hunt down every freedman for selling. the idea is not silly thats what happened the civil war was about money and power and control. the north wanted the money from the south to keep control they had, the south wanted more direct power so they used trade goods they controlled to black mail the north into doing as they wished the whole war was economics. ending slavery just appeased the opposition and broke down souths economic infrastructure.
