Brought home a Classic 30 a couple of weeks ago.Still feeling it out but am quite pleased so far.You can get some nice distortion on the drive channel at fairly low volumes.I did put some reissue Mullard EL84's in and switched the AX7's to vintage USA stuff. The stock blue marvel speaker is performing well enough.
based on all of your comments there is no problem with audio. On my computer, the entire demo plays fine but when dude plays the guitar all audio is cut ooff....until he stops playing and starts talking again. seems intentional but apparently im the only one with that problem. will look elsewhere i guess...frustrating
I have this amp and there is no way that i can get the clean channel to overdrive in the least. If i turn the volume up of that channel half way up, it's gets so insanely loud that my head is about to blow! Im affraid I'll never get to hear those sweet el84 really sweat with heat, cause it just takes so much volume to overdrive them. And the overdrive provided from the 12ax7s on the pre-amp is just not the same....
@ppericodelosppalotes It is probably the make and model of the tube that comes stock in the amp. Some will break up sooner thatn others. I have an EL84 amp that use regularly (Crate Vintage Club 50) and had the same problem until I retubed it with a set of Mullard EL84s. They break up a LOT sooner and do it in a very smooth way. Now my 50 watt starts to sound like AC/DC at around 4-5 on the master
The audio quality of this video really does unjustice to this amp. If you're thinking of buying it, watch also willyboogerblues's video, it is much closer to what the amp sounds like when it's in front of you. Not that this is a bad demo, but audio quality is awful! And this is a GREAT amp! In a really fair price as well! Try it you won't be disappointed! It just makes you wanna...play.
Your video is worthless since you haven't let us see exactly where your knobs are set to get those sounds. I cant even get any distotion out of this amp. Every now and then it will get some dirt but not when I need it. Show us where the volume is set on the guitar and where the amp settings are.....Please
@goffbum Hey man! to get distortion, use channel 2 and adjust adjust the PRE all the way up and use your POST as your volumen knob :) (I recommend setting the POST all the way down before touching the PRE, or you'll blow your ears off). That should give you a pretty good classic rock distortion.
@goffbum On channel 2, set your Post to about 10:00, and your pre to around 3:00. the best thing to do is to get an A/B/Y box, so you can toggle between channel 1 & 2.
this is seriously the best amp on the market for the money....I have yet to find an amp i enjoy more. The tone just kills, i have a egnater tweaker, and a marshall class 5 and the C30 beats em all...Mine got drenched with coffee and is still kickin out MONSTER tones.
This sound much more amazing in person...all these youtube vids don't really give you a good idea of the real sound...I just played on of these...and was a little shocked as it sounded nothing like I though it would based on these vids here..to me it sounds like a cross between a fender and a marshall..a little character from both and very high quallity parts...check out " Pete Townshend - Magic Bus (Live) 1996 " I at least wanted to somehow create this sound and this amp does..and a lot more
@stevoe1000 Not bitching atcha.Listen to BluesZep on the telecaster and rethink. His video came through and sold me on one of these little monsters.I don't think any of the other companies come close to this sound.
@bobs146 Well, you could put a distortion pedal in front of it to get more high gain stuff, but if you want to do hard rock, I would look at the Peavey ValveKing Series. It's supposed to be one of Peavey's most versatile amps. Check it out.
Best thing you can do, well, if you end up getting a deal on the combo (the head is better) is take the taps off the internal speaker and hook them to a 1/4" jack. I actually took the chassis out and made mine a head, and now it drives a 16Ohm 2x15 made of solid wood, loaded with vintage Jensen P15s, and now it sounds almost like a delta blues on roids. I also retubed of course. Check out blue guitar mods, that dude has some ideas I'll be trying as well.
Ever heard of a 12BZ7? It has the same pinout as a 12AX7, requires approximately the same plate and heater voltages and draws the same currents, same amplification factor, but at a little over half the plate resistance of a 12AX7. In other words, you end up with nearly twice the gain, and if you put a 12BZ7 in the driver stage (V3) it drives the power section HARD! Play one chord, it will make your fucking head spin! Don't do it all the time though, it does put more stress on the amp than usual.
They seem to do what I do, put a condenser in the room, far away from the amp (I also use a solid hardwood 2x15 ext cab with jensen P15s) and it records much better, sounds bigger.
Which amp would you recommend for home use (mostly low volume) if I'm looking for Junior Kimbrough/Black Keys tones? Delta Blues, Classic 30 or Windsor Studio?
I know this comment is over a year old, this is just for the benefit of everyone else.
In Response to surfboy7's comment, you do not need need any more watts,
Increasing the wattage to 100 would only make the amp 15% louder, an extra speaker, or even just using a more efficient speaker would have a more significant volume increase.
For live purposes it would be best to just mic it.
A 100w amp is only 50% louder than a 10w amp with the same speaker.
I think the current ones are the best ones Peavey has ever produced. We've fixed the tube rattle issue and Classic 30's pretty much hold their own against anything in this power rating.
Yea def, I had one of the older ones, visual difference being the new ones have that uglyass bulge on the top and the old ones didn't, mine got nicked from my car and ive just hunted down a new one from ebay.
I have the Classic 30 and I play Pop punk and Alternative. This amp works really well for that kinda music too. I don't even need to use any pedals. I love the amp distortion.
Michael, this amp sounds awesome. Ive had a classic 30 for 12 years now and I still love it more and more. I had to change speaker once to a eminence legend since i couldnt find the original blue marvel here in chile, the original blew. But apart from that the amp is really hardcore, as all peavey products. I play profesionally in a rock 60-90,s cover band and this amp rocks. . The clean channel is crisp and the gain is super sensitive and dinamic, specially using a strat. Simply The best.
Im looking to get my first tube amp...cant decide between this or the traynor ycv50 blue. I'll be using it at home and small gigs. I play blues/ classic rock/ hard rock. Which one?
Thanks for the info. Do you have a video or audio file of how it sounds? I just bought a used C30. It's 12 years old with the original tubes, so I want to change them. Trying to figure out what would be best. I play mostly blues and classic rock and am looking for a good clean tone like snowy white or peter green. Would you recommend the tubes you are using?
i have got the classic 30 and play the same kind of music like you und it sounds very great... with a single coil guitar (telecaster) and a humbucker guitar (sg)
anyne who can answer plz... i play blues, hard rock and sometimes a metal, so i need good distortion and good clean, for 400 to 500 dolars (used), between Marshall DSL401, Fender Hot Rod, Vox AC-15 and this Peavey Classic 30, what would be better?
i don't play that kind of music at all. but i think that the peavey winbdor 100w stack would probably fit you because it is a recreation of a british style(good for punk) amp
the clean tone you play is so warm, smooth, bluesy and what I look for, until you introduce yourself. and the nice overdriven lead tone with harmonics between 3:47 - 3:55
I've bought a few weeks ago a new classic 30 and I just noticed a buzz comming sometimes from the amp when playing the low E and A strings on my strat (neck pickup) on the dirty channel mildly (on 4) driven with a blackstar HT tube overdrive pedal. I wonder if that is the tube rattle or the speaker? Does anyone know? Also my amp hasn't got the foam under the tubes.
It could possibly be the foam, but it almost sounds like string buzz. Make sure you aren't hearing the buzz with the volume down. If you are and you want to try the tape, it's just high temp foam tape that you can get at any decent hardware store and it's cheap. Michael
It's the valves that vibrate. Find the notes that you notice it doing it and then try again whilst someone is holding them with their fingers... (careful, they could be hot).
Someone is not bothered, someone puts foam around them or rubber, not sure how they work.
the type of tube the classic 30 uses are prone to filiment rattle i had one that did that bad but as long as i leaned the amp back or put it in a amp stand it went away
Im thinking of buying one of these. I play different styles, from blues and classic rock to Metallica. I obiously need to buy a pedal to get the metallica sound, im thinking about Metal Fuzz. But is this amp good for more heavy distortion, with pedals? I would love some opinions forthis, thanks.
Our new bass player has one.And he has left it at our jam room so I don't have to lug mine..I love this amp. It is so classic rock sounding I thought about using this live instead of the jsx..because we play all classic..It is excellent for Nazereth,Black sabbath, ZZ top, slide blues..plus It has a shit load of distortion ..I used an mxr Dime pedal and it had a heavy sound for the metallica type stuff ..This amp is perfect ..
it's plenty powerful enough to cut through a drummer and band..i have the head with a 2x12 cab and i love it. if you're playing in a huge room, you'll probably have to mic it. i've used it at jams with 2 other guitars ,bass and drums and it cuts through pretty good.
I would say probably yes but that depends on how clean you want it and how loud your drummer is. also check out the andy fuchs clean boost pedal. you can get a louder clean channel if your feeding it a louder clean signal. makes sense right. the clean channel sounds very clean and high quality, I love it.
It's not that. The humbuckers in the HP Special are very hot. With single coils, it wouldn't have as much gain. Also, make sure you don't have a 12AU7 in the input stage if you bought it used. Sometimes people swap those out for less gain. mds
PV, I like the Classic 30, I have one, but I think the oval bit with the pointy 80's logo addition to the front was a mistake. Just my opinion but I reckon the new design has lost some kudos.
Alright cheese feet, why can't we hear your demo? Is there some wacky copyrights issue? SHEESH !!

You can extend the volume of channel 1 and not have it break up as soon by changing to lower gain preamp tube V1.

Our new bass player has one.And he has left it at our jam room so I don't have to lug mine..I love this amp. It is so classic rock sounding I thought about using this live instead of the jsx..because we play all classic..It is excellent for Nazereth,Black sabbath, ZZ top, slide blues..plus It has a shit load of distortion ..I used an mxr Dime pedal and it had a heavy sound for the metallica type stuff ..This amp is perfect ..

to anyone who owns one: can it be clean but also loud enough to push through in a band setting over a drummer without too much breakup?

it's plenty powerful enough to cut through a drummer and band..i have the head with a 2x12 cab and i love it. if you're playing in a huge room, you'll probably have to mic it. i've used it at jams with 2 other guitars ,bass and drums and it cuts through pretty good.

Awesome little amp, mine will drive the wife to madness before the overdrive starts to bother me :)

Mine starts to break up aound 5 or 6 out of 12 on the clean channel with JJ/Tesla tubes. It sounds great but, it's REALLY loud at that point.

Does the clean channel get overdriven in 4? Is that what you said? cause mine doesn't overdrive even in 7.
