not sure if this is right, but i heard that he wasn't really sure what to do with the origin story so he handed the film back for someone else to do. it woulda been cool for him to maybe do his own take on the story and i woulda liked to see it too, but also think as he is a creator he'd probably want to work on his own creations and deliver that 100% rather than half-ass a job.
