But according to Deloitte, over 5% of Americans actually will travel abroad for healthcare.

Nothing is financed directly by government. The people sometimes finance things indirectly through government. That's why healthcare won't get fixed when we're asking the question "how much will it cost?" as if insurance laws will change that. It's ultimately going to cost the same amount no matter how it's being paid for as is, but if we fixed the actual problems (like tort reform) the argument about how to set insurance up would have more meaning long-term.

However, to make the system efficient, it is not enough to eliminate government 3rd party payer . One also needs to eliminate all sorts of non-government 3rd party payers.

This is how it used to work. In the past, people went to doctors and paid to doctors. Then insurance health companies appeared - a 3rd party. Then, on top of that - HMOs and PPOs - a 4th party, supposedly to correct the 3rd party.

Insurance drives up price of medical services. Case in point, Lasik eye surgery is not covered by insurance. Started out at $5K. Economies of scale and competition have brought it down to $500.

Abortion has been $200 for a few decades because most insurance doesn't cover it.

No prescription drug would cost $400 a month if first parties had to pay. Few would be able to afford it.

Way back when, doctors charged what customers could pay. Insurance changed that.

I have a blood test done in the US...and by the time I walk from the lab to the doctors office, the results are waiting for me.

My aunt waits....and waits...for permission to have a blood test done. Then she waits...and waits to have it done. And then she waits some more: sometimes 3 weeks before she receives the results.

If states removed a lot of the costly and unneeded mandates (drug rehab, mental health parity, chirporpracter, invitro fertilization, etc), allowed EVERYONE to purchase across state lines and everyone got "catastrophic insurance" (your policy says nothing until you pay $2000 out-of-pocket) you would have low premiums for the young, they could save a lot of money on premiums and it would assist them in the event of a serious health event.

@TheDepreso A lot of the supporters of Øbamacare like to rail against the ins. cos. Fine, but you don't punish them by making everyone buy from them. They should have pushed us all into maintaining health savings accounts and only use insurance for catastrophic care. That would take ins. cos. out of 90% of the transactions. It is not a govt takeover now, but there are regs in it that will drive the ins. cos. out of business over time, thus leaving govt as the only option.
