Wow man, this is EPIC. you know, it is funny, I used to think that this was too sad, but maybe I have come to understand the originality and authenticates of it, I do not find it sad anymore, just amazing!!
Bill Conti's work is a case study where the music made a movie more epic than it was, and Rocky was epic, but Conti's work made it more epic. What makes it special is Rocky was a low budget film and the theme sounds like it is made for a movie with a bigger studio budget.
movies allow us to experience emotions and this move was wonderful even if you start out laughing at it, you end up cheering for him.....the emotional experience is why your young kids will watch the same movie over and over and over and then suddenly they don't watch it ever again.....they are learning to experience emotions and when they are bored/tired of that emotion they move on to another one
The Rocky soundtrack is to me the best that has ever been written for a movie. Not only is it great music but it fits the story so well, the heart pumping emotional high of "The Final Bell", the inspirational training songs of "Going the Distance" and "Gonna Fly Now", and this brilliant closing song that somehow captures the feelings of exhaustion, victory, and sadness of reflecting back, all in one song. This collection was a masterpiece Bill Conti.
@asdrubalamv Sorry I was replying to roque44 above, where they said "UIL Solo? What is that please?" and was explaining what UIL Solo was. But the reply button put your username instead of roque44. Again, sorry for the confusion.
rocky and rambo are both great don't compare them because they are diferent characters, anyway stallone works is perfect..so inspirational movies, tha's is the reason why sly is a legend and a hero for a lot of people
@tmrevenge Oh my god! You just described it perfectly. That is how I felt. It is just sad. I love Rocky and I think it is my favorite movie series. Rambo was good to but Rocky I think is better. It is also going to be sad the day Sylvester Stallone dies. I hope he lives to be as old as Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman.
@amitnayna01 yeah Rambo is great specially the last one, stallone made 2 great icons but i agree with you, Rocky is better cuz he is not haunted by his sins. Rocky always makes people around him better, paul, mick, gazzo, apollo, andy, little marie, and of course Adrian but they did that for each other. he needed her as much as she needed him.
u are right i would be really sad when he dies. :(
@tmrevenge Rambo is badass that is all. He does have deep character and what not, but I prefer Rocky's though. He is just so kind and happy. He loves everybody. He isn't a jerk to anyone. He never yells at his son or anything. Just like you said he makes everyone feel better. Like Rocky 2 during the press confrence. He said "you know I got a kid to feed and all" and then everybody laughed. He is just cheerful. Everyone loves him.
@Silkcena fair enough!, u are absolultly right, as long as there is people inspired by Rocky, he will always be alive, and people will forever be inspired by the Italian Stallion
My brother, I think, wanted me to find the Composer of this piece out. I guess, but don't know, that he...and I...thought it was a classical, baroque, romantic, or whatever era piece. It was extremely interesting to find out that the work is of Bill Conti. Very nice piece
I honestly never believed in having a favorite all time film until I saw this movie for the 3rd time.
1st time I fell asleep, and still up to today I feel like a dumbass for that, 2nd time I didn't understand it, 3rd time, became my favorite movie of all time.
The last song played in rocky 2, during the credits, is bill conti overture, but 6:30 into it....just thought id throw tht out there cuz i been looking for it for the past 20min
residentevilkiller44 greetings from Lima Perú. Me and a a friend of mine do the same, we rested, with few other people, in the cinema room till the end of the credits, flashed with the images & the music. RB's last credits are amazing! I study counterpoint, & when this beautiful string quartett began, I got frenzy! Greetings again!
Its amazing how Bill Conti ties ALL the songs he makes for the Rocky series together. All the songs share similar progressions. Unknowingly we have actually watched "Rocky the Musical." Made in 6 parts.
the end of rocky balboa when the credits starts rolling down in the theater and this music starts i stayed in the room alone until the security guards told me to go
@samuraichamploo07 As did I, there was at-least 3 or 4 others just standing in that theater motionless bidding our farewell. :'-( Sylvester Stallone said he didn't know they were still filming as he was atop of those steps for the last time. No sir, Thank You.
When you think about this song and think about the fact that Rocky's reward was being able to go the distance with Creed and that the price he paid was to get his face beaten off, it makes it all the more poignant. Its triumphant, yet bittersweet.
The notes leading up to the end seem kind of dark, like weathering a storm, and then the very end is like the sun is shining again, he's got Adrian in his arms, etc.
The first time I watched Rocky as a young child in the 80's it totally formed my way of thinking. It gave me hope that you can do anything if you put your mind to it and give it your all.
Thank you Sylvester Stallone, and THANK YOU ROCKY!!
Rocky got more props than real boxers, such as "fictional character" can be so respected and looked at like a living legend with the 30yrs of Rocky fans. Its a remarkable inspiration of what Rocky gave us as individuals. Thnx Sly for bringing Rocky and the 30yrs of knocking out fools
This particular piece is very reminiscent of Baroque music. It's a lot more difficult to compose polyphony and counterpoint. Bill Conti deserves more credit than he's given.
Astonishingly beautiful. You have to be in an altered state, if only momentarily, to create something this beautiful. My favorite Rocky composition of all time.
I was 5 years old when I first saw this astounding film in 1976. I remember the countless times my older brother and I listened to this on the soundtrack album in our basement. This will always be a part of our lives...
that's the awesomest thing i heard today. i was walking home worrying and wondering if i would not take anything meaningful into my later years, but your post was so encouraging!
@lrenee100 : I was four when I saw Rocky, and I also spent MANY hours listening to this song and the whole soundtrack in my basement. It's a timeless movie that only gets sweeter and meaningful over time!
This song remains one of my all-time favorites, capturing a mans attempt to strike the balance between being a man of action and one of introspection. The complexity speaks very highly of the quality of Rocky, Rocky II and Rocky Balboa. These movies communicated to me the qualities to which a true man should aspire, and I hope to pass the aspiration to acquire those qualities on to my son.
Haha what complexity is there? It's just a man doing what many other people do and wanting to be the best, and even at 60 his ego still gets the better of him.
This must be one of your periodic purple prose frenzy outbreaks. Very high I think.
@tjmjr63 we all shall pass it tto our children to make a new better developed generation of human beings..as well as not giving up on this generation..but we must try to change it .. in order to live in a better world..
@tjmjr63 YOu only mentioned I, II, and "Balboa." But the others where Stallone seemingly lost his way fit. Rocky seems perfect and good, but he's as human as the rest of us and the "failures" of III, IV, and V makes him as feel as real as anyone we know in our daily lives. IMO, those middle 3 makes you appreciate just how good 1 and 2 were and how well he did in wrapping it all up with "Balboa."
I want my life back. I want her back. I want to get from under my father's wing. I don't like being in the nest again.
Finding civilian work for my Air Force trade is difficult. I feel like no one understands me.
So when I hear this theme, I realize that given the story is accompanied, this song speaks to me.
I succeeded, loved, lost, and failed all before my 21st birthday. I want to start over, but I'm afraid. I don't think I can go the distance anymore. There's no reward for me.
I always think about what could have been...what SHOULD have been. But I was a dickhead, I guess. I don't know what I did wrong though. I wish I had her back.
I wish I had a place to call my own instead of retreating to the depths of my fuckin' imagination while inhaling tobacco smoke. I wish I could talk to someone. I wish I could love again, but I'm scarred, and even worse, I'm scared now. I don't want to be alone anymore, but I'm afraid to end my lonliness.
I've been having a hard time lately. Adjusting to civilian life is difficult. I don't have a car nor a place of my own; I stay with my father, who after his 2006 divorce, is a bachelor now. I feel like I'm in his way.
I had a great time in the service. I met the only woman who I have come to genuinely love. I wanted to marry her. She was my first love. We broke up when I left Japan. She's married now.
This song just takes my breath away. What a gentle and honorable song to end such an inspiring movie with. It moves my soul. I bought the Rocky soundtrack just for this one song. Beautiful.
yeah right after gonna fly now and all the people running up the steps then the credits roll he just stands there looking out across the city with this music being played he didn't even know he was being filmed he's just standing there thinking this is the last time I'll ever stand here as rocky beautiful.
This really sets the first movie apart from the rest (aside from maybe Rocky Balboa '06 which I really enjoyed). This as the closing theme as the credits scroll completely leave a different tone. By 3 and 4 you're left with Survivor pop anthems blasting. Since they also didn't have any idea they'd make another (no less 5!) movies it leaves you with a happy yet maybe not so happy ending. Rocky lost the fight and we don't know what will happen with Adrian and Rocky.
it sounds like royalty, like a real king, a king like ROCKY BALBOA.
but at the same time, when i listen to this, i look at how life really went: its ups and downs but really, i am grateful im living here on this earth. its worth it. i aint goin' down no more =D
hearing that initial segment of lonely-sounding violins, like a choir of lamenting angles; it makes my arm hairs stand on end - beautiful and tragic, just like the ending to this movie.
Easily my favorite piece from the series.

@dylbub True, but he admitted he used HGH and steroids.
I don't mind that though because at his age, HGH is EXTREMELY beneficial because it has reverse-aging like abilities.
He may be 60+ but I bet he's in shape like he was at least 40. I think this movie should have been what Rocky 5 was.
In part 5, he turned everybody's hero Rocky into a braindead pansy who left his own children and family for a punk like tommy gunn.
Not to mention he never actually BOXED, but had a brawl.

This song seems to speak to me.

Every day I go running, I think about Rocky.
In the cold and snow, in a cold early morning or late evening.
When all people gone, and bit snow falls.

this song really sounds like it came from the Baroque era.

Well the song itself is pretty boring for someone who didnt watch/like these movies.
But i guess if you watch the movie (which i never did) and like it, then this song supports very well the ending.

Yes when rocky stands on the steps with this song as the credits roll. What a moment. I cried for weeks. ROCKY

This song just takes my breath away. What a gentle and honorable song to end such an inspiring movie with. It moves my soul. I bought the Rocky soundtrack just for this one song. Beautiful.

I love this tune so much it just ends rocky series beautifully when this plays at the end of rocky balboa and he's standing there on the steps

You mean the latest movie? I saw it in the theatre and don't remember the end.

yeah right after gonna fly now and all the people running up the steps then the credits roll he just stands there looking out across the city with this music being played he didn't even know he was being filmed he's just standing there thinking this is the last time I'll ever stand here as rocky beautiful.

It's not on youtube anywhere, (just the scene at adrian's grave), I'll have to watch it again. That's cool though, it ends as it began ;]

Agreed. There's no better ending you could ask for.

1:23 makes me cry, i don't know why, this song is very sad.

i always tear up when rocky is screaming for adrian in the first movie
then the credits make it worst
JAYBIRD75961 2 years ago
This really sets the first movie apart from the rest (aside from maybe Rocky Balboa '06 which I really enjoyed). This as the closing theme as the credits scroll completely leave a different tone. By 3 and 4 you're left with Survivor pop anthems blasting. Since they also didn't have any idea they'd make another (no less 5!) movies it leaves you with a happy yet maybe not so happy ending. Rocky lost the fight and we don't know what will happen with Adrian and Rocky.

rly, im going to add this to my myspace profile
it sounds like royalty, like a real king, a king like ROCKY BALBOA.
but at the same time, when i listen to this, i look at how life really went: its ups and downs but really, i am grateful im living here on this earth. its worth it. i aint goin' down no more =D

I love the part of the section from :24-:31. The shift to lower notes sounds great!

hearing that initial segment of lonely-sounding violins, like a choir of lamenting angles; it makes my arm hairs stand on end - beautiful and tragic, just like the ending to this movie.

this melody absolutely can be used for my montage. great!
