  • this song is so ridiculous. half of me hates the fuck out of it. and the other half appreciates the fuck out of it. i just dont know what to think.

  • Favorite that shit!

  • What's a boy to do if he'll never be a gangsta?

Anger in his heart, but he'll never be a gangsta

If you move into his neighborhood, he'll never make a sound, ooh!

What's a boy to do if he'll never be a rasta?

Singing from his heart, but he'll never be a rockstar

If you move into his neighborhood, he'll never make a sound

Bang-bang, oi! Never move to my hood, cause danger is crawlin' out the wood

    Bang-bang, boy-ee

  • I can't stop watching this!

  • gay

  • omg what the ACTUAL fuck, that middle part mustve been SO ridiculous to rehearse but it was SO perfect. amazing job. SO amazing

  • this is fucking sikk!

  • 2 saxophones? briliant!! makes me wanna rethink everything about what makes a good live band:/

  • That 1 Guy is way cooler. Merrill doesn't even have a magic pipe.

  • i think merrill and bjork should reproduce

  • It is SO WRONG that people are sitting!!!!!!

  • Dirty Projectors on cocaine?

  • @takk78 LOL!

  • Fuckin sick!

  • So COOL! Never seen/heard nothing like her.

  • @Nickiheard Juana Molina.

  • haha IM GONNA SEE THESE GUYS WHEN THEY COME TO AUSTRALIAAAAA! yay!

  • What a piece to reproduce live. Great!

  • Is that John Hodgman hiding in the corner at 1:37?

  • She sounds like Steve Perry when she does that man voice.

  • this audience needs to liven up a bit, if i was at this show i couldn't help bouncing around the room

  • her music is a revelation

  • I really appreciate the female singers who come around and aren't afraid to express their masculine energy.

  • @madsketcher While I can see what you're saying, why call it "masculine" energy? Why is it that any time a woman is powerful-- in voice, in presence, in body-- they are man-like?

  • @Poprocksian I used the term to mean "projective", not male. My point is that every female has masculine energy and every male has feminine energy.

  • @madsketcher I don't understand how something can be "masculine" but not like a male. Why is being "projective" a masculine quality? My point still stands that assigning sex to personal qualities reinforces functionally anachronistic gender stereotypes.

One of the reasons I like Tune-Yards so much is because Merrill is not classically beautiful, doesn't sound classically female and is unrepentant about it. But not being stereotypically feminine does not make her masculine.

  • @Poprocksian Masculine just means traits typical of a male. Blame history (and people's stubbornness to change their ideals) for the fact that she fits the "stereotype" of masculine for some. On that note, I don't think she seems masculine at all -- I think she and her voice are both beautiful and raw :)

  • I think she's cute.

  • she sounds like man

  • she is breaking lots of new ground

with her voice and her beat

  • They're cool.

  • Hipster music is G00D

  • man does this remind anyone els of GENTLE GIANT?

  • fuckin hipsters...

  • That was cool. Weird & irritating but cool. Maybe thats what they're going for. I like it.

  • I'm not a fan of her music, but she has an incredibly diverse voice. It impresses me. And I also agree with the guy talking about how that audience was horrible. They may as well have been performing to trees.

  • Officially the worst audience/venue i've ever seen on video. Though they get redemption points for cheering. Just super frigid is all. Unprecedentedly so. That type of posture may *may* be appropriate for a baroque recital-not even. It must've been like playing to a room full of shape shifting iguanas who turn into humans after the song for a quick hand.

    I'm having fun ;)

  • @Whitebuffaloisborn maybe they didn't wanna interrupt her intricate looping??

  • simply noise. That is all

  • @td4uga if thats all you hear, than I feel sorry for you... your really missing out

  • terrible

  • She's a bad ass.

  • She is so bad-ass.

  • Its weird...because i don't find this musical at all. But its still beautiful, its just a different form of art, barely passes as music, but I like it(:

  • @jeansrlucky please look up "music" in the dictionary. not liking it doesn't make this exempt.

  • This gives me goose bumps.

  • There is nothing on the face of the earth like a tUnE-yArDs show. Nothing. Jaw-dropping.

  • Merrill is super talented and awesome. the end.

  • can't we just all agree that Merrill is super talented and awesome. the end.

  • WOW!

  • Musical. Genius. She completely changes the game.

  • @wordup63 hahha, way to prove how bad your taste in music is.

  • @stefanoo312

Her name is Merrill Garbus, and as weird as it is that she could almost pass for a guy the first time seeing her, she is actually attractive.

  • Feel like ive come on to a video watched by a bunch of up and coming albert einsteins lol (look at above argument) but still this music is awesome something new and fresh not like most pop shit you hear these days, love it.

  • how can you sit down when you hear this song? THAT is invalid.

  • fresh air, but with a kick

  • It's cool she has a voice like that, unique

  • im so confused about that persons gender someone tell me plz

  • @stefanoo312

    what does it matter?

  • Check the 2009 live Youtube video of this song. Just as good and a little more raw.

  • this is ridiculously awesome.

  • is that a dude dressed as a girl or is her voice just deep?

  • @BuddyIStalking It's not even that deep! Who started this whole trend of thinking she is a guy? It has to be a fad because it is in no way rooted in reality, she totally sounds like a woman! Do they not hear the higher pitched, lilting qualities of her voice that she blends so seamlessly with the so-called deep tones?

  • @fraublucher its not a fad, its just that she looks like a dude, and is sooo ugly, and has a deep voice you dumb ass

  • to the haters: hear the death bells for your mainstream and substream music... hate it on your way out.

  • In response to both top comments: WOW WHAT A GREAT SONG! :D

  • This is exactly how the album recording sounds - that's ridiculous!

  • goose bumps

  • On a more relevant note more tUnE-yArD videos makes me a happy young man.

  • DUDE

  • did anyone else realize that the usernames of the two top comments are about fear????

  • @18shbohl They are probably best friends, related, or it's one person with two contradicting personalities...you never can be too sure these days...

  • Please tell me they have a karaoke version!

  • Comment removed

  • She is absolutely bloody excellent.

  • I feel real honesty from her music.... i have great respect for this woman!

  • @cheuee2002 : ditto...

  • This woman is a genius.

  • Not being a prick, just as curiousity... are the guy on the sax on purposely off key? It sounds a little strange. On a side note, Merril is bloody genius!

  • @NighttimeBird Ignore grammar mistakes.

  • Damn, why is it even a discussion. Man, woman, whatever. When did it stop being about the music.

  • I love that woman.

  • i used to believe that the internet would help bring the world together...boy was i wrong...instead it has allowed every loudmouth asshole to spread his meaningless opinions without the fear of getting punched in the mouth. people make me sick. merrill rocks.

  • It's no fair for androgynous-looking people to have uncommon, ambiguous names. If her name was Karen there'd be no debate. It's not just the way she looks, either, she's got a pretty deep voice. Bad-ass song.

  • Merrill Garbus is the sexiest man I ever saw

  • I didn't think it was possible to sit so still to a song as lively as this one!

  • Incredible.

  • Am I the only person who doesn't see how Merrill Garbus resembles a man in any way? When I heard her voice for the first time, I knew it was a woman, and when I saw her for the first time, I knew it was a woman. I don't get it.

  • @RaygunShaun : agreed but I did think she was african american

  • muy bueno, la voz de ella es unica; aca en chile hay un grupo llamado congreso que tiene un estilo muy parecido

  • She-he sings awesome

  • @edithvedder Gender stupidity is really kind of pathetic. Did YOU seriously just insult Merrill? Because that's fucking hilarious. Then again, people your age are receiving less and less education and we can't blame you for your shitty ideas... too much.

  • @itsokaytobeafraid relaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxxxxxx... SHE is the best ... isn't an insult ... just enjoy the music.

  • @itsokaytobeafraid Did you really insult someone for insulting someone due to their gender, then insult millions of other by saying they are not educated and saying they have 'shitty ideas". The hypocrisy is astounding and personally I'm flabbergasted at the hypocrisy that is taken place here. Your whole argument has become invalid.

  • @fearmakesmestrong I shouldn't have said "uneducated" as IQ has little to do with actual intelligence. Other than that I'd just like to restate "fuck that asshole" and I'm so tired of people "just joking" not realizing how pathetically self-serving they are in doing so.

  • @fearmakesmestrong Did you really insult someone for insulting someone for insulting someone?

    INSULTCEPTION.

  • @fearmakesmestrong This is YouTube. Even if you win an argument, you still lose at life

  • @fearmakesmestrong Did you really make a new account with an ironic name to insult someone, for insulting someone, for insulting someone due to their gender.

Damn, I guess it's really just that hard to make an insult without hipocracy these days.

  • @itsokaytobeafraid Generalizing...clearly a display of rhetorical competence.

  • @amarr1 Who did I generalize?

  • @itsokaytobeafraid Umm, I have a question, by this comment, what age group did you mean by "people your age"?

  • @itsokaytobeafraid by "people your age", what did you mean? Because if you meant kids ages 13-17 or something like that, you;re incorrect, because I agree that insulting people isn't funny, and I haven't made fun of gender, and I;m in that age group. If you're going to insult an individual, go ahead, but don't drag other people into it, okay?

  • She is incredible. Best thing at Primavera Festival.
