Though you people may believe that your experience with the automobile justifies your opinions, the dates posted here are all no earlier than 1980. This was after the Corvair was redesigned in the 1960's, thanks to Mr. Nader. As a beginner researcher, I have read much on the matter and conducted several interviews. pef286, instead of speaking derisively of the research the makers of this documentary have done, you should do research of your own.
I beg to differ about Nader's crusade against the Corvair, I have had several Corvairs over the years with no problems. I find them to be great little cars
I remember my parents buying a 1987 Plymouth Grand Voyager. Back then it had no airbags, no ABS, no side airbags, and not even shoulder seat belts. Now all these are standard. I mean in the past 20 years there has been a huge leap in safety technology mainly due to government saying to the automakers you have to do this. Without this intervention a lot of these features would not be standard. I mean look how many lives have been saved due to the airbag.
for the pinto case, volvo was the 1st car to have fuel tank ahead of the rear axle for fuel tank safety since 1974. the only production car which has fuel tank at rear of the rear axle was ford crown victoria model. the pinto was succeeded by north american ford escort
Even today, millions of cars are polluting our air. Millions of gallons of oil is being pumped to the surface and transported all over the world every day. Millions of tons of raw materials are mined from our earth to produce these cars that pollute our air and water.
We're killing our planet, just because we want to go faster. When will this insanity end?
I've owned a Corvair since 1984, and just about every Corvair book and Unsafe at Any Speed too. You are clueless about Corvairs. Really you are! I would not have bought a dangerous car.
cars are crap now thanks Nader. No car is built to crash there built to drive. The bottom line is people cant drive, now we have the safest cars possible and people are driving reading books, cell phones, makeup,TV ,drunk. And thousands of people still die every year. ABS and air bags seat belts and more cops is not gonna stop it some times it are own fault.THINKING goes a long way
if you notice when the corvair flips, the driver did not turn into the skid, as soon as he felt the rear lift. he kept the steering straight so the car kept swinging.
like if cars are vital to people. i hate cars and will still hate them for the rest of my life. i find those croops who burn cars to create truble realy brave.
@TheBousaba I can fully understand how you feel, but it's important to remember that the real culprits are the PEOPLE in charge of auto companies who either knowingly sacrifice safety for profit or are simply incompetent at auto design. The car itself is just an inanimate object, like a toaster or a soda can.
Nader was 100% right about seat belts, safety glass, hard dash surfaces, etc, but he didn't know what he was talking about when it comes to independent rear suspensions and weight distribution. All great modern performance cars do NOT have solid rear axles. The Corvair was ahead of its time, and it's the kind of car that GM should have been building.
Instead the Germans ran with the technology and we're still playing catchup .
The Corvair was no worse than any car of that era. NO TUCK UNDER!! My 65 Corvair convertible will out stop and out corner my '04 Toyota Matrix. Really!! The scary part is just a lap belt and a sold steering shaft to the gear box located just behind the bumber.
Hi! As a real old car lover, and a fan of Corvair, I say fault lays on all sides. Cars had to be 'tidied up' safety wise. Pathetic little single brake systems, doors which burst open in mild collisions, sharp surfaces inside, bad windshield design, and steering columns that would shishkebob a person were inexcusable, and fixable at the time. But the public? Note how underinflated the back wheels were on the blue 'vair at 2:00. Unknowing mechanics etc at work. And both these tests were rigged
@spikedpunk I have had several Corvairs early and late. Never flipped one and have done some high speed cornering. Did you also notice how high the Corvair is off the ground? Looks like some suspension mods were done for this video. Corvairs sit very low to the ground on 13 inch wheels and those wheels look much bigger as well.
@jamacadada I have driven my fair share of them too. I never had any real mishap in them, tire pressures watched. The fact is the car makers knew of unsafe steering assemblies, etc,and took their chances at the time with selling stuff they knew was not the best they could do. yes, Ford did rig the tests shown here. Do they mention in their own film of the Falcon in the background with the 'drop-in gas tank' slicing open in rear end collisions? Many of their products had this design back then.
And because jackasses like this guy we have to drive slow fucking cars?????

@galaxie63punk if anything the safety feautures cause more accidents i think. people think that they are too safe and don't take enough care.

@cw147 I understand your logic, but people still have accidents in older cars, so i'm pro-saftey features.

1964corvan is 100% correct. The Porsche 911 has the engine in the "wrong" place too.
