Irish will never be a "lost" language, i'm 12 from Dublin, go to an all irish speaking school, i'm going to an all irish speaking secoundary school and all of my family and friends go to an irish speaking school. we go to the gaelteacht every summer for 2 weeks. i wish morre people spoke it because it's something to be proud of! my dad's from scotland and mam's from ireland + my great grand parents are from the north and from england xxx
i love how you put the pronounciation of the lyrics under the actual irish words.great for those taht dont know.thats the first time ive seen anyone do that.and excellent video.
"Ireland's Call" is a better national anthem. This song is a terrorist song! The IRA is just wrong because you don't need violence to get your message across. Yes, I am American of English and Scottish ancestry, but I do believe that Ireland should be united (North Ireland join Rep. of Eiren).
@MMusashi7 You are a stupid ignorant bastard if you think this is a terrorist song, obviously you have no clue what the fuck you are talking about, i wonder would the Americans have been able to defeat the japs without violence aye?
@MMusashi7 shut up. you don't know anything. just goes to show the ignorance of 'SOME' (emphasis on the 'some' lads) Americans. so go do your study and you will see that is not an IRA song. and BTW the help of the 'OLD' IRA was vital in the creation of a free republic of Ireland.
I sympathize with the Irish and I like the melody of this song. In general, though, I don't like references to soldiers, armies and wars in national anthems. (In the French anthem, there is talk of letting the enemies' unpure blood stream in the French gutters. I like the verse of Das Lied der Deutschen that is nowadays sung, especially the part ,,Blüh' im Glanze dieses Glückes": ,,Blossom in the glow of this happiness".) (I'm Flemish, for those interested, by the way.)
Love you, Eire. I was there couple years ago and I definitely enjoyed their culture and loved it. People there were so friendly.. Gotta tell you.. My country and Ireland have so many similarities.. we both were under the neighbor's control and our forefathers were brave to fight for the freedom. We Koreans feel you guys are like our company.. and the beautiful yet sad music... God bless you, Eire. :-)
I am an Alaskan, but every time the pub closed, everyone sang this song in English or Gaelic, including myself. I have been to many of the sites of historical importance in Ireland's independence and civil war. One cannot help but be moved by it all. And especially when we sang A Soldier's Song at closing.
Hawickman back again. The Irish, like the Scots are a forgiving people, it's in our nature(Like it or not) I live in England and find the Welsh are my brothers
I AM LEARNING THE IRISH PART FOR THE GAILTEACHT(PLACE IN IRELAND WHERE U SPEACK ONLY IRISH)............AND LISTING TO HIS VOICE 100 TIMES A HOUR IS REALLY ANNOYING & TO THE CREATOR THE END FLAG IS ITALIAN!!!!
@MyProcrastinator Correct - it should have been green and orange - Green represented Catholics and orange represented Protestants and the white in the middle represented peace or truce.
Actually there are two flags that represented Ireland - One is a state fag which is the tricolor and the other a red cross with white background (not the English flag) which is the flag of St Patrick and that cross also added into the British flag since 1801. some Irish churches flew it.
My grandad was Irish,im very proud of my heritage as lots of English people are,i googled it and English with Irish heritage runs into many millions, never will we let Ireland be treated badly again, just glad we are good neighbours
@montseJFK lost? over 1 million speak it, you can learn the language threw internet...people like you make me sick to think because you cant use the language 90% of the time at school or at home that you have no reason to learn it
@montseJFK The English language is just as much a part of our culture as the Irish language is. We shouldn't feel ashamed about Irish, whether we speak it or not. What matters is being part of this land and its history.
All kinds of comments offending people or countries or anyone/anything else will now be removed. Please stop being so childish, I'm really tired of this now.
Nice and sensible comments are always welcome of course :)
The EU makesmucht of this a moot point. But, historically, going into a foreign country, murdering the people, outlawing their religion, their language and virtually their entire culture does not make for deep friendship
The reason why there is so much hatred of the english is that events are relatively recent and, correct me if I'm wrong, there was no partitioning of Finland under Tsarist/Russian rule. I do think it is a traversty that it has been sung in English. If you really want to know why to hate England, watch 'The Wind that shakes the Barley'. Interestingly, this comes from someone who has links to all Ireland, Scotland and England, living in the latter, mother being Irish and father being Scottish.
Good to see the phonetics for the Irish version! I'm Scottish and like Ireland we speak the language of our invaders, I only know the words of the soldiers song in English but this will help me learn it in the proper language it should be sung!
Most Irish people are nice to English, have an English girl in my class I get along with her well and she gets on with everyone, it's her brother who always talks down Ireland in front of me but I've never said anything about England. He always tells me how stupid Ireland is, stopped after I pointed out to him he wasn't really that English, his dad is Dutch, mum lived her life in Scotland, he was born in England but lived in Holland, then France, and then Ireland. Haven't heard from him since..
ireland was once one island til the english decided they wanted more land, so the ROI have every right to a decision if it is to be one again. TIOCFAIDH AR LA!
Our anthem should not be sung in english, you dont hear the french/italians/ germans singing their anthems in english, if people want to learn the words, learn them in irish, its not that difficult anthem to learn you know!1
@Bruder4143 Correct me if I'm right but ROI is independent right? About NI u have a point and I agree with that if the majority of NI wants to become a part of the Republic they should be allowed that. But I do not think that the people of the republic should have anything with the desition to do... And as I said before, that NI is a part of UK is no reason to hate Englishmen, they are not their government. And back to Finland, the russians took a big part of our territory in the latest war...
I'm not Irish, I'm Finnish :P I just like Ireland =) I like England also, and I dont understand why some irish people hate englishmen... England is not what it was and englishmen are not the english government... just like today's russia isn't the russia that invaded us in 1808, and russians are not the russian government so why hate them... many finnish people do, i just think its sad
Yes, in modern day Ireland I'd agree with you, my point was that some, not all , but some older generations just dont & wont see eye to eye with many English people due to historical differences. A friend of mines wife is english & she couldnt be nicer....you see what Im getting at??
@SirHoratioNelson its really only the poor people in Ireland who hate the english! and ill probably get a load of comments calling me poshy this and that.. but for most people in the country we like the english.
im from ireland :) I dont hate englishmen and dont know anyone who really does... what we hate are loyalist and Unionist ideologies (if they can be described as such) and a lot of us hate the rich (and thatcher, the police, budget cuts- i myself particularly hate education cuts, the queen, rangers, people who believe Ulster scots is a language, the queen and imperialism, brian cowen, cromwell, the 12th of july... the orange lodge & the 11th July ) . Thats all really :)

Thats all really :)
@theproletariat101 so you hate me :P i want NI to keep british but its like for me is like..... is like ireland but is british¡¡ why do you hate people that thinks not like you? i think ireland is ireland and northern ireland is british, and just a question: they are loyalist in the republic?
I dont hate :) i just know they are wrong. And they are not loyalist in the republic in the sense that loyalists in the north are... the people in the south are not loyal to an oppressive monarchy :)
@SirHoratioNelsonyour right irish dont hate englishmen we dont like the english government my best mates are british and scottish but there is a lot of sectarian violence over here esprcially in northern ireland where the catholics were treated like slaves by the prodestand community so there is still a lot of anamosity between them nice video mate tiodchfaidh ar la
Indeed, I have nothing against Russia or Russians at all, after all they were kind to us in many cases as well, letting us keep our own system :P And I think the most important part in all these cases are to forget wars and tyrannies of the past and an understanding of that today's Russia, today's England and today's Sweden are not the crazy-of-power empirebuilding states that they were. And to always remember, the peoples of a country, and it's government, are not the same
@SirHoratioNelson yes, you were a democracy in a absolute monarchy :), but tell me a thing, under sweden, finland had any autonomy? because estonia and latvia had. , btw, do you think that NI is Eire? because i think thats the point in what we differ :P i want NI to keep britsh but i am not of those radicals, i want a NI in what you can speak the language you want without be calles a "fucking unionist" or a "fucking irish"
Actually there was no Finland before the Russian invasion. We were as much Sweden as Sweden itself is today :) It can be compared to today's Northern Sweden. Everyone is Swedish but a few still speak the northern language of Sami :P I think we have generally been well treated, the Swedes didnt try to turn down the Finnish language or anything. But the Russian invasion was the criteria for us to become a separate area and later a free country :)
And about NI, I think there should be held a fair referendum. Im pro the remaining British colonies to remain British as well, but only as long as it is supported by the people. Same with NI. The problem in NI is that the people is not agreed... However I think it's a question for the people of NI, I dont see that it would be ROI's problem. I think ideal would be referendum in NI, and ROI letting them into the republic and Her Majesty to give NI away if the referendum shows so
@SirHoratioNelson How can you and that breizhcatalonia1993 be pro British Empire? You do realize that everywhere britain has went they have left a trail of blood? britain murdered millions of Irish throughout the centuries, enforced a holocaust on the Irish which later became known as the so called Irish Famine all in order to refuse a people of their right to freedom. It is easy for you to claim that the Occupied six Counties in Ireland should remain british when you did not suffer like us.
@Dagda1981 no, pro british empire no, let me deeply explain you what i think about that. I NOT want UK to recover its empire. Only i want them to recover hong kong because they wanted to stay british, i want the same with portugal and macau.I want NI to remain part of the UK, but i support your self determination and that you decide what you want to do, british or irish. its your absolute right and only you will decide the future of Northern Ireland, plus i think that that 6 counties wanted to
why cant a choir sing this song? i don't have anything against this guy but still, we should have a nice organized anthem... by the way 3:25 thats the Italian flag, ours is green white and orange (or gold.... whatever)
Yes I know it looks like italian, noticed that after uploading... It was Irish, but seems like windows movie maker messed the picture quality up somehow...
b4u1i1 - I know everything in the world. Having dispensed with childish comments let me add a serious one. As an englishman I find the Irish language fascinating and do hope it survives, as i hope many minority languages do. I do think it important, no - essential, that it remains in the island of Ireland. On the subject of the notes, when I first went to ireland in 1975 they had these bloody great thing with Dark Rosaleen on, they were great. Much better that euro bridges! Best wishes Ireland.
The pronounciation guides in the video are incorrect and often times have nothing to do with what is sung. He sings "Fahe woid veith sair", you say "Fwee vod veh sair", wtf?
@IRISHRUGBY878 Millions of Jews were killed by Hitler's regime and De Velera was an admirer of him. The Irish did very little to help fight tyranny diring WW II, they are Europe's shame. You are the ignorant one!
And Britain tried to remove the Jews 100 years before that!
Britian couldn't risk having a force, as large as Germany were becoming, on their door step. Thats why WWII happend. Not to protect other countries, remembering Britian had invaded half of the world already, just like the NAZIs.
Why would we defend that?
Before sending me a stupid reply, honestly, I know more about this than you do.
Without the euro currency and EU subsidies the Irish economy would be completly screwed. I've spend want term in Ireland during the second voting about the contract of Lissabon. Our university was full with "Say no" ads!??? But I guess the celtic tiger voted well, finally.
Yes, an excellent job, Well done 2 all involved. From a republican background it,s nice 2 see all the phonetics..and handy..lol..there only 1 ra...will ever be 1 ra...up the ra..
I find i get more passion when singing it in english because i acually know what im saying, when i sing it in irish i dont. But yes it should be sung in Irish, but we should also all speak Irish.
Whatever about the Penal laws, the Famine, Bloody Sunday, and Partition, the most terrible thing the english brought was their filthy language.
@charlesdcw1990 700 years of occupation thats why, during the Penal laws Irish people were prosecuted for speaking their native tongue. British people are so ignorant, they dony realise the slavery and hardship they brought to so many countries throught the world through empirial domination and greed. But u wudnt know about that, u are arrogant and obliviosv to the past.
@IRISHRUGBY878- Gaellic is a beautiful language that deserves to be dominant in Ireland, but keep in mind some of us Irish volunteered to stay within the UK. The Irish blood in my family is all Northern Ireland, and we still have family there today. In County Down, County Tyrone- and we don't mind speaking English at all.
@Jurassic0Al listen anyone who wishes Ireland to remain in the UK is not an true Irishman. yes its true no-1 seems to mind speaking english, but thats the problem u see, the fire is gone from our belly's. as Yeats once said '' romantic Ireland is dead and gone''. its a sad truth
@IRISHRUGBY878- To an extent, I can understand you. Michael Collins was as true an Irishman as you could ever hope to be, and in no way did he want to be British. And considering Irish- everything, really- was held back by all those centuries of British occupation, the counties of the Republic of Ireland completely deserve to be independent and free from the UK. But the Northern Irish, though they chose to be British first and Irish second, haven't at all forgotten the latter.
@theweirdkids1 Take a summer course in one of the Gaeltacht Schools, there are some in Galway and Donegal, it is a good way to start learning the language there are also places that have courses on offer.
I guess nothing wrong singing this song in English, at least people around the world could listen to how hard your ancestors fight for your rights. Ireland spirit of warriors should be acknowledged to the whole world and receiving recognitions!
@RamsesIreland Tossers like you are worse, You dont have to speak Irish to be an Irishman. If you think that then you exclude many men who fought for Irish Independence (although one or two leaders were actually english). I just hate Republican/nationalists who try to create an elite class based on Irish speaking
@jimmyratz You retard The National Anthen was ORIGINALLY written in ENGLISH. The IRish version came years later after independence. So Singing it in english is valid . Otherwise you are saying that the original Independence fighters were wrong to sing it in English. Anyway dont we need a Polish version now.
The English version is actually the original version of the song. The Irish version has never been officially adopted by the State and is quite outdated when it comes to spelling and grammar. You can even feel that the English lyrics rhyme better and fit the music...but I still would only sing the Irish version. I think it should be updated maybe...
@alteye1 The Anthem was written in English and thats good enough for me, English is no longer the preserve of the English people who number (including Scots, welsh and northern irish) about 60 million when there are about 800 million english speakers about 400 million of these it is their mother tongue
why the fuck is this in english. the insult and cultural rape continues, i am ashamed that irish is not my first language, i am irish, yet i have been poluted by the english language, i bleed green!!!!!!
@bushwhack69 if you want to use Irish why do you write it in roman script when it was originally written in Oigham script. The National Anthem was ORIGINALLY written in ENGLISH so is equally valid as the Irish version which was written years later. To denegrate the English version is an insult to the composers. Anyway modern english is a mongrel language the result of Anglo-Saxon, French and scandinavian invaders and not the original language of the ENglish
Bushwhack, a chara -- no cultural slight is intended. The soldier's song was was written in English, and not translated into Gaelic until 1924. English is the original version -- not better, just older.
@bushwhack69 Hardly anyone speaks Irish, the Irish are greatly influeced by Scottish and English culture and Ireland has benefited from centuries of British rule.
@bushwhack69 The song was originaly wriitin in english, The soldiers song is a republican song and its alrite to hear it in english as just that, but when ur playin da national anthem as like before a match, it should and will be as gaeilge
This is a fantastic anthem! I'm from Hungary, but I love Ireland and the Irish! I hope I will have a chance to travel there once!

@SirHoratioNelson :P i think the same, i love UK but i like also Ireland , and also russia gived you autonomy to win your confiance :)
breizhcatalonia1993 11 months ago
@breizhcatalonia1993
And to always remember, the peoples of a country, and it's government, are not the same
SirHoratioNelson 11 months ago
@SirHoratioNelson yes, you were a democracy in a absolute monarchy :), but tell me a thing, under sweden, finland had any autonomy? because estonia and latvia had. , btw, do you think that NI is Eire? because i think thats the point in what we differ :P i want NI to keep britsh but i am not of those radicals, i want a NI in what you can speak the language you want without be calles a "fucking unionist" or a "fucking irish"
breizhcatalonia1993 11 months ago
@breizhcatalonia1993
SirHoratioNelson 11 months ago
@SirHoratioNelson
I think ideal would be referendum in NI, and ROI letting them into the republic and Her Majesty to give NI away if the referendum shows so
SirHoratioNelson 11 months ago
@SirHoratioNelson How can you and that breizhcatalonia1993 be pro British Empire? You do realize that everywhere britain has went they have left a trail of blood? britain murdered millions of Irish throughout the centuries, enforced a holocaust on the Irish which later became known as the so called Irish Famine all in order to refuse a people of their right to freedom. It is easy for you to claim that the Occupied six Counties in Ireland should remain british when you did not suffer like us.
Dagda1981 8 months ago
@Dagda1981 no, pro british empire no, let me deeply explain you what i think about that. I NOT want UK to recover its empire. Only i want them to recover hong kong because they wanted to stay british, i want the same with portugal and macau.I want NI to remain part of the UK, but i support your self determination and that you decide what you want to do, british or irish. its your absolute right and only you will decide the future of Northern Ireland, plus i think that that 6 counties wanted to
breizhcatalonia1993 8 months ago

b4u1i1 - I know everything in the world. Best wishes Ireland.

charlesdcw1990 1 year ago
@charlesdcw1990 700 years of occupation thats why, during the Penal laws Irish people were prosecuted for speaking their native tongue. British people are so ignorant, they dony realise the slavery and hardship they brought to so many countries throught the world through empirial domination and greed. But u wudnt know about that, u are arrogant and obliviosv to the past.
If i was u i wud be ashamed to be British.
IRISHRUGBY878 1 year ago 2
@IRISHRUGBY878- Gaellic is a beautiful language that deserves to be dominant in Ireland, but keep in mind some of us Irish volunteered to stay within the UK. The Irish blood in my family is all Northern Ireland, and we still have family there today. In County Down, County Tyrone- and we don't mind speaking English at all.
Jurassic0Al 1 year ago
@Jurassic0Al listen anyone who wishes Ireland to remain in the UK is not an true Irishman. yes its true no-1 seems to mind speaking english, but thats the problem u see, the fire is gone from our belly's. as Yeats once said '' romantic Ireland is dead and gone''. its a sad truth
IRISHRUGBY878 1 year ago
@IRISHRUGBY878- To an extent, I can understand you. Michael Collins was as true an Irishman as you could ever hope to be, and in no way did he want to be British. And considering Irish- everything, really- was held back by all those centuries of British occupation, the counties of the Republic of Ireland completely deserve to be independent and free from the UK. But the Northern Irish, though they chose to be British first and Irish second, haven't at all forgotten the latter.

The English version is actually the original version of the song. The Irish version has never been officially adopted by the State and is quite outdated when it comes to spelling and grammar. You can even feel that the English lyrics rhyme better and fit the music...but I still would only sing the Irish version. I think it should be updated maybe...

bushwhack69 2 years ago 21
@bushwhack69 if you want to use Irish why do you write it in roman script when it was originally written in Oigham script. The National Anthem was ORIGINALLY written in ENGLISH so is equally valid as the Irish version which was written years later. To denegrate the English version is an insult to the composers. Anyway modern english is a mongrel language the result of Anglo-Saxon, French and scandinavian invaders and not the original language of the ENglish
sandyrow100 1 year ago

Bushwhack, a chara -- no cultural slight is intended. The soldier's song was was written in English, and not translated into Gaelic until 1924. English is the original version -- not better, just older.
