Any one wanting to learn Tribal belly dance this is the collection of dvds you want to buy ...I have bought all of them as every step is so clearly broken down and explained and the practice to join the steps together and the the camera angles is all just perfect..I have bought many a dvd trying to learn the moves and not been able to do them but now I can do them and do them well thanks to this brilliant collection THANKYOU SO MUCH
Belly dance, tribal, arabian, North African, near eastern dance etc etc has nothing to do with Romani lifestyle or culture. We have our own dances and customs that have their roots way back in India. Romani dance has nothing to do with the waist but all is to do with raised arms, clapping or tap dance. Please try to see it from our point of view.
relax.. brother , gypsy got the egiptians and jewish roots ,in india they was a long time but before thise they come from terytory of israel, i am not happy about thise anyway
The Romane left India in after 1000ad. They speak a Rajasthani / Panjabi regional language which is different to Domari / Quarbati nomadic groups of the middle east and Iran. From India they settled in what is now Turkey for about 300 years before entering into Europe. There is no evidence to suggest that Romane people ever set foot in Israel or north Africa on any route in Europe.
your knowledge of the gypsies is huge my friend , jewish people officialy saing same things, but we are related to ashkenazi jewish, tey are mix wyth egiptians to.and gypsies was in the israel when jesus was there, beleve me
@Tsigano I understand your comment completely. The name of the group might be misleading, it's more the idea of "gypsies" that other have than the actual Rom culture and dancing. In their favor I have to say that this dancing group had always made clear that they're not Rom o representative of the Rom culture, they chose the name more to represent fusion, wandering, etc.
@Tsigano But I know it sucks when others try to define without knowing or caring about your side of matters. You know who you are and how you are and that what's matters, specially when you were not even being rude. All my respect to the Roma peoples around the world, be there in Hungary, Mexico, Spain or France or any other place in this big, round world.
Absolute tosh r Romani related to Jews. U r 1 of those trolls trying to tell the Romani they r Jewish or Egyptian. Try looking into world proven research instead of made up theories by non-Romani romanticists writing books based on nonsense non-researched facts
p.s. Romani are not Egyptian. This was just a mistaken identity due to Romani brown skin and eastern ways. Europeans recognised brown skinned north Africans but knew not of Indians. Many Romane went along with the identity to escape early persecution. Many Europeans were entriqued by Egypt due to Pyramids & also many references in the Bible.
I don't class it as opinion. I class it as fact. I am raised Romani and know Romani culture wide world. When I see this type of bore housewife evening dance club misrepresenting my culture I feel sadened. Gypsy is short for "Egyptian" and is a term that should only aplly to Romani (though not a respectful one). The other people are know as "travellers". The nomadic / semi nomads of Asia sometimes wrongly referred to as "gipsy" are not Gypsy nor Romani.
They're not mis-representing your culture, that's the whole point. They're not alluding to Romani specifically, gypsy in common parlance is more of a concept than anything else. They're not claiming to be Romani, it's the gypsy concept, to which noone owns a copyright. And if it's not even a respectful name then why should you resent that other people use it? A word is a word is a word. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. If it offends you, don't watch it. They don't hurt anyone.

Gypsy is a word that is short for Egyptian and was used for Romani due to misinterpretation of where they were from due to them having brown skin and black hair. Its like using the word nigga or coon and saying it doesn't disrepresent Afros / blacks becsause they don't accept it themselves. Its common knowledge that white people have wrongly connected belly dance with Romani (gypsies) through wild none researched romantisism.
In Romani we have the word Gori which is a non-Romani pale skinned women. Seeing gori's playing at being what they think is Romane is actually quite funny. Some Romane groups call themselves as Kale(h) meaning "Blacks".
Also it is seen as crude and offensive for a Romani female to dance and dress in such a way. Especially in front of Gaje (non-Romani). This is also a custom and attitude that is firmly Indian. So again how do this permit belly dance to be a part of Romani culture? Like I said it is non-Romani romantisising over something they do not understand or truly respect.
From my understanding Belly dancing comes from the middle east, persia or north africa. It may have something to do with the old silk route caravans but it is definetely not a Gypsy (Romani) dance.
That's not, strictly speaking, true. There are any schools of thought that credit the Romani gipsies were responsible for spreading the Iranian version of belly dance through much of Europe. It developed among the Romani people to eventually become flamenco but there are many similarities between the forms of dance. You just have to want to look for them :)
Then show me one single true Romani group that belly dances? Flamenco is only one style of Romani dance that is amongst Iberian Romane. Eastern European Romane also tap dance, raise arms and clap. None what-so-ever however belly dance. It is non-Romani romantisms that portray Romani (gypsies) as belly dance. It has no grounds of truth. It is insulting to the Romani people.
I didn't say they still bellydance, I said they are credited with spreading it across much of Europe and it has evolved in many different forms. Methinks you are a purist and if that is your view so be it. There are none so blind as those that will not see and none so deaf as those that will not listen. Everyone is entitled to an opinion friend :)
The trouble with your little theory is that modern Romani dancing is parelleled in India still and it is very different to belly dance. Why would Roms dance a different dance and change over the hundred or so years back to something still parelleled in India?
It may be different to bellydance but there are certain similarities that are derived from the same root.
At the end of the day, you have your opinion. That's fine. We all have an opinion, but these people are not trying to offend anyone and they love and enjoy what they do. If that is too difficult for you to swallow you don't have to watch. And not all gypsies are Romani, you just seem determined to take offence.
It has a positive association to us. We do not say Rom because gaje like me would not understand what is meant without being told. When bellydancers use the word "gypsy" we mean a spirit of connection across the world, a sense of rootedness even as we travel through life. I hope this helps!
I understand your feelings, yet many dancers who use the term "gypsy" in regard to bellydance mean no offence. Sometimes they are ignorant. Other times they use it to describe a feeling for which we have no equivalent word.
Roms find this sort of thing very crude and offensive when used in connection with themselves. Roms do not and obviously have never belly danced - their customs and true dancing have descend all the way to India and if they did belly dance it would make sense they still do. Why do gaje try re-create and corrupt our proud identity??!! What right have they?
I am a big fan of Gypsy Caravan and it's director, Paulette Rees-Denis. She put a lot of research and care into her dance. She doesn't seem like the type of person to intentionally offend someone. I thought Rroma didn't like being called "gypsy"?? So why would you be offended if a gaje/non-Rroma called themselves by a name you don't like?? Please correct me if i'm wrong!
Just because we don't use the word, other people unfortunetely do. Why not just call it something different then we'd all be happy. Why use the name of a people on something that has nothing to do with them?
I think they named their troupe Gypsy Caravan because tribal style belly dance takes creative inspiration from different sources, just like the Rroma did when they travelled the world. They are using the term "gypsy" as an idea, not a people. But i can understand your frustration. However, i must say i'm glad they didn't call their troupe the Cracka Caravan.
