I'm going to ask a question (and probably sound like an idiot but oh well)... why can't the U.S. do anything about the company's bonuses? Is it because it is written into their contracts? Isn't there any way their contracts become void once AIG is basically owned by the U.S.? Or can't they say, you won't get the money unless... I thought the whole point of the bailout was so that we could have more control over these shady business practices.

I think in the short term, there's nothing wrong with taxing most of the bonus money to get it back however, it is seems to be highly unconstitutional and in the long term the Government will abuse their power and try to limit American wages with "caps", minimum wage is a floor, the Gov. wants to put a ceiling on American prosperity. Then they can take it and redistribute it. That is the plan.

To be honest the bonuses are only a small percentage of the entire bailout they have received. 0.0988% to be exact, not to mention that not every sector of AIG is to blame. The Financial Products Unit is the primary culprit of AIG's massive losses. Should executives in other sectors that did there jobs be penalized for the few irresponsible? I would think not, but then again nobody really knows who got the bonuses.
