Each Character are there for a purpose. Long time ago, Someone wrote a brilliant info about Sam Flusky - His crippling inferiority complex dictates everything he does. Sometimes he's unaware of his cruelty, believing himself to be doing the right thing; at others it's as if he can't help himself. He's a man who constantly tries to do good things, yet at every turn he's thwarted either by his own secret past, or his fear of that past. This conflict is written on his every gesture and expression.
It should be in my mailbox today from Netflix, I've tried watching this before, but was always expecting a thriller. I'm going into it this time knowing it's a drama and a period piece. I love Hitch's vision and he remains my favorite director of all time.
Mentioning that the French like it isn't always a selling point for me... Jerry Lewis anyone?
Playwright James Bridie wrote the screenplay for this film. He was very good in character connections. A Hitchcock fan wrote this about Under Capricorn "Hitchcock shows Ingrid Bergman and her rival (Margaret Leighton) with a most empathising subtility, there is a strict and mirror-like duality among the characters, everybody seems to be the exact counterpart of the other (something like a photograph and the negative)."
This isn't a thriller. Hitchcock wanted to make a drama. So he made Under Capricorn with Bergman. But the film was a box office failure. But today, French Critics consider it as one of Hitchcock's finest films.
Is is true? Can you point out a good article about this film?
Maybe I need another helping of this movie. :) I felt it lacked that certain little something that makes a film a real masterpiece. It could've had much more emotional impact on the viewer at some points. Or maybe the timing is not too good. I don't know.
But I would never say it's one of Hitchcock's weakest. There are lots of things to enjoy - the acting, the cinematography, the story itself. A beautiful, beautiful film.

I don't know who deleted my comment but as far as I remember I only said that THIS YouTube video is of good quality as most uploads are not ..... but I didn't comment on the director, the actors of that era or the plot of this film, did I?
Great Direction by Hitchcock. The scene Michael Wilding walking to the house was later reused in Psycho. In Hitchcock's Psycho, it is the scene where Lila Crane (Vera Miles) walking to the house of Norman Bates.

OK, so I've done some reading and I've watched it again and now I'm sure.
Whenever I'm sad and depressed, I'll just put in the disk with this film, and it will remind me life is still worth living.
