@Rodel757 Actually you are incorrect with your definition of what a park is. A park is land set aside for recreation. The definition also includes an area where animals are protected. Hence the official name is Yellowstone National Park and the reason why the officials who regulate and patrol the area are a part of the National Park Service.

@ipscone Ahhh.....they do. When you enter Yellowstone they give you a ton of info and brochures that tell you all about the wildlife, what to do, what not to do. They have a ton of signs up all over the place. Before you go on overnight hikes, you have to go through a bear safety course. Perhaps you should take some time and visit the park before you accuse the Park Service for not doing a good job of letting people know there are bears in the park.

9 times out of 10 attacks are the result of some stupid human behavior. Seeing the bear meant they were too close. They should have immediately gone back that way they came.

If you see a mother bear with cubs DO NOT continue walking toward them !!! Stop immediately, stand quietly, and move away as soon as possible. Then notify the rangers when and where the sow and cubs were seen on the trail. Never put any pressure on a mother grizzly because she will defend her cubs! So sorry to hear about the fatality. I'm sure the couple never intended to cause any harm to the bear. Unfortunately, the bears do not know this and will respond accordingly.

This was a most fabulous video. The camera work and special effects were stellar, no, magnificent! The audio mixing was great and the whole atmosphere of the video really built the tension. I was in suspense, for every second could have been a plot twisting turn that no one saw coming. The bear's backstory was deep, enriching, and moving, to say the very least. To many bears in the yellowstone ecosystem for the amount of habitat available. With the wolves destroying the elk population, bears have lost another food source to boot......
@highcountryhal Bears dont eat elk other than newborn calves for the most part. There are not too many bears, either. People have run bears down to small numbers in many other places and the natural,healthy,undisturbed ecosystem Yellowstone has is what the habitats should be. The balance between nature gives ups and downs in species numbers. The wolves overhunt, the elk go down, elk go down, wolves go down, wolves go up, and the natural cycle continues.
@MrFloppywaffles Sorry, but I just don't buy it. We have not had wolves in yellowstone for 100 years. There are enough Bison to sustain a large number of wolves, even just from old bison dying, and this may keep the wolf population large while the elk population dwindles. Less than 4,000 now, from upwards of 15,000. Moose are just about nonexistant in the park now.
@highcountryhal Problem is, bison weigh upwards of a ton and elk weigh less than 500. The wolves will pick elk over bison anyday. And no, there are not enough bison for the wolves. Nonexistant elk? Wolves dont really get away with animals like moose alot of times. You have to remember, there are also mountain lions in the elk population equation. The populations right now are the most natural for this type of habitat in North America. These popluations are the natural way things go.
@MrFloppywaffles You missed the point. The wolf population will stay high because of the bison. The elk population will dwindle because of this. You want to believe in the "natural way". Perhaps 200 years ago there were few elk in the mountains (read Lewis and Clark Journals of the early 1800s). This could have been caused by the wolf predation at the time. I personally don't want to go back to the days of no ungulates in the woods. If "natural" is no animals, we should delete that model.
@MrFloppywaffles To many wolves have result in the extinction of moose in the yellowstone ecosystem. Only 114 left in 2010 compared to 1200 in 1995. They are close to extinct now due to wolf predation. Elk numbers keep dropping......

What has happened is a nominal reduction in the herd size of elk which has allowed the willows to grow before they are chewed to bits by the elk. This in turn has started to attract more beaver, and subsequently more moose in Yellowstone. I think the only animal capable of causing extinction is the human one.
@mefford67 Less than 4,000 elk left with an average age of over 8 years old. Less than 10% of the calves make it to one year of age. Oh, its gonna drop alot further.....Nice angle on the human extinction thingy....keep in mind there are 10s of thousands of wolves in canada and alaska.

And you certainly don't panic because bears can sense that. Its unfortunate that people don't understand wild animals. If they did these tragedies wouldn't happen.

If you see a mother bear with cubs DO NOT continue walking toward them !!! Stop immediately, stand quietly, and move away as soon as possible. Then notify the rangers when and where the sow and cubs were seen on the trail. Never put any pressure on a mother grizzly because she will defend her cubs! So sorry to hear about the fatality. I'm sure the couple never intended to cause any harm to the bear. Unfortunately, the bears do not know this and will respond accordingly.

This was a most fabulous video. The camera work and special effects were stellar, no, magnificent! The audio mixing was great and the whole atmosphere of the video really built the tension. I was in suspense, for every second could have been a plot twisting turn that no one saw coming. The bear's backstory was deep, enriching, and moving, to say the very least. To many bears in the yellowstone ecosystem for the amount of habitat available. With the wolves destroying the elk population, bears have lost another food source to boot......

@highcountryhal Bears dont eat elk other than newborn calves for the most part. There are not too many bears, either. People have run bears down to small numbers in many other places and the natural,healthy,undisturbed ecosystem Yellowstone has is what the habitats should be. The balance between nature gives ups and downs in species numbers. The wolves overhunt, the elk go down, elk go down, wolves go down, wolves go up, and the natural cycle continues.

@MrFloppywaffles Sorry, but I just don't buy it. We have not had wolves in yellowstone for 100 years. There are enough Bison to sustain a large number of wolves, even just from old bison dying, and this may keep the wolf population large while the elk population dwindles. Less than 4,000 now, from upwards of 15,000. Moose are just about nonexistant in the park now.

@highcountryhal Problem is, bison weigh upwards of a ton and elk weigh less than 500. The wolves will pick elk over bison anyday. And no, there are not enough bison for the wolves. Nonexistant elk? Wolves dont really get away with animals like moose alot of times. You have to remember, there are also mountain lions in the elk population equation. The populations right now are the most natural for this type of habitat in North America. These popluations are the natural way things go.

@MrFloppywaffles You missed the point. The wolf population will stay high because of the bison. The elk population will dwindle because of this. You want to believe in the "natural way". Perhaps 200 years ago there were few elk in the mountains (read Lewis and Clark Journals of the early 1800s). This could have been caused by the wolf predation at the time. I personally don't want to go back to the days of no ungulates in the woods. If "natural" is no animals, we should delete that model.

@MrFloppywaffles To many wolves have result in the extinction of moose in the yellowstone ecosystem. Only 114 left in 2010 compared to 1200 in 1995. They are close to extinct now due to wolf predation. Elk numbers keep dropping......

@MrFloppywaffles Guess again. The buffalo population may keep the wolf population up higher than if they just subsisted on elk. That may mean the end of the elk. Your "natural cycle" solution is not so natural if that occurs.

@highcountryhal Right..... Wolves haven't even come close to destroying the elk population! What has happened is a nominal reduction in the herd size of elk which has allowed the willows to grow before they are chewed to bits by the elk. This in turn has started to attract more beaver, and subsequently more moose in Yellowstone. I think the only animal capable of causing extinction is the human one.

@mefford67 Less than 4,000 elk left with an average age of over 8 years old. Less than 10% of the calves make it to one year of age. Oh, its gonna drop alot further.....Nice angle on the human extinction thingy....keep in mind there are 10s of thousands of wolves in canada and alaska.

@79Testo What? The sow was defending her cubs. You are almost sure to avoid a bear attack if you listen to the rangers, make lots of noise while hiking, and do not run from a bear. They are wild animals and it is not the bear's fault that this man was killed.

The bear was captured and killed months later when it attacked a second person in Yellowstone and her cubs were sent to the Wolf and Grizzly Discovery center in West Yellowstone.
