Among the greats we can include, of course, Segovia, Williams, Parkening, etc. And for Flamenco ? Who can forget the remarkable Carlos Montoya, and Manitas de Plata ? Of course, there are others.

FYI "real" flamenco has many forms and is about more than just "duende" (Goths love that word!) Vicente Gómez performed plenty of duende pieces during his career, but this is an Alegrías. In fact the name of this song is "Alegrías." The word Alegrías literally means joy, cheer, happiness. This is not to be played in a state of distress.

@vactisum I see. But in my family, half of which is gitano, it's not true flamenco if it's not a rose: beautiful to behold, but thorny. Even in a piece that is happy on the surface, the pain should seep through. Flamenco is the blues of the outcasts: the nobility whose land was stolen by the church, the marginalized jews, the gitanos, etc. who came together to create the flamenco culture of venting sorrow and loss. It's not meant to express the muse. All roses and bats; no birds.

I suppose when Vicente G was a kid playing in the tablaos in Madrid (his father owned one), the dancers were actually doing the twist and the singers were actually doing predecessor versions of rap. I suppose Sabicas and Paco incorporated South American melodies to insure their product was "true flamenco." Enough of this "true" and "not true." I've played for over 40 years. Flamenco has some basic palos, but what underlines a flamenco style is approach.
