wow, weird race for a such a high class field. I understand championships normally go off slower and more tactical but since when do you see an elite field actually negative split an 800m? absolutely chaotic by elite standards.
@blondalina coughlin wasnt even an 800m runner. what exactly do you base your argument off? Kipketer was the WR holder and a slew of these men were at least 1:43 runners. I think your theory has a few holes in it. Don't get me wrong, Coughlan was a great runner over 1500m/5000m but he wouldnt have a prayer against these guys.
True, the algerian Said Guerni and kipketer shoud have won it if they were not blocked on their tracks in the last 100 metres. They come back like a train.
Wow watching this again brings back the emotions I felt for Kipketer in 2000. To be forever denied the Olympic gold. In 1996, Kenya raised the objection, but here he had himself to blame by not trying to speed up the race, given his 'kick' wasn't his forte. He left himself to much too do, and ran out of track at the finish, but a fine run by Schumann, forever etching his name in history. Great run by young Russian, who would succeed Schumann in 2004.
@nykytne13 why the cheater part, what makes u think he was on drugs? yes he was extraordinarily fast, maybe coz he was talented. if he got caught, fire away, but he never was even placed under suspicion.
Does the yellow line on the track mark the last 100 meters on this race? It appears as though Kipketer crosses that yellow line at either 1:33.9 or 1:34. He finished in 1:45.14.
yes it does. the yellow line is at the point where the turn ends and the straight start. both turns are each 100m and both straights are each 100m so that a lap in the stadium is in total 400m.
you can also see that shortly after the finish line the new turn begins so the way from the yellow line up to the finish line amounts exactly 100m.
That Swiss runner got screwed over by the Italian! When he was pushed off the track, that had to have thrown off his rhythm. I bet he would have at least gotten the bronze if he hadn't been pushed.
If Dube of Botswana had the strength he could of pulled off a Dave Wottle, though if Saïd-Guerni actually sprinted in a better position he could've beaten Kipketer.
there is a lot of "what if's" there. That is what running is. IF someone was in a better position or someone kicked harder at a certain point then sure we coulda had a different winner but thats running. No point discussing what could of happened but look at what did happen
@gianlucantu I believe I read somewhere that it is the fastest last 100 meters in an 800 meter race... though ironically it didn't result in a gold medal for Kipketer.

Incredibly tactical. I was expecting a much faster time maybe around 1:42-1:43
buffalobeast13 3 months ago
That kind of race is "tactical" only for the guys who can't run under 1.44.
For Kipketer, a tactic like that only puts the race up for grabs, where if he would shoot for 1.42, only one or two could possibly beat him.
