I'm American can a brit please explain to me what has happened to the UK or what it is really like? I'm 20 and have never gone further then 200 hundred miles away from philadelphia (sad). But after reading 1984, watchmen, v for vendetta, a clockwork orange, and seeing this movie and green street hooligans etc. I see a specific literary genre that is this distopian future or present UK. didnt know if it's just films or if its really like that, but British Literature is my concentration in my BA

The problem is that most Americans will probably only see this Rom Com picture of Britain, with people like High Grant prancing around with identical 'British' accents (from a specific part of upper middle class London). Outside movie fantasy land things are different.

I agree with other comments (like Hollywood is not USA, but a parallel world which touches some truth) but also feel the reason this touches a nerve for some Brits is that it is a powerful dramatised visualisation of how some perceive the country is going / has become in some ways - not all shopping trips result in subway fascists trying to rape you but the perception of law being inadequate to the current needs, wouldbelawful citizens punished, criminals getting lots of get outs.

All those films/books exaggerate a shit ton, and i'm saying that having been mugged in london in the last fortnight. The police are actually much nicer and more professional than portrayed in this film. Please come over for a visit I guarantee you'll love it, it's as good as ever if not better.

I saw Harry Brown last night and thought it was AMAZING! None of this over the top American Acting with massive explosions and surviving 400FT drops, this was as realistic as it can get and Michael Caine really complimented the character. (If that makes sence? ) : )

The reality is that even if they work hard in school doesn't mean they wont lash out afterwards. I've been in a situation when I was in a gang for many years. Unless you been in one its almost impossible to understand so don't try to. Its not just all about the drugs, violence, booze. The gang members become your family.
