  • "freak show excess" jajja

  • this reminds me of a movie i once watched...

  • Steve Vai mentioned Ivo as his inspiration for "freak show access" - That´s pretty badass

  • to all fans of ivo papasov......bulgarians are constantly trying to steal his real identity which is ( turkish born in bulgaria) thatswhy his music is what it is amazing..

  • @warosha1 OMg you idiot its Bulgarian music

  • Steve vai sent me...

  • we had Ivo to Minnesota decades ago

HE ROCKS & that aint polka

  • WTF

  • Even though to my western ear I cannot spot and follow the rhythm, it's amazing music.

  • Can someone transcribe this????

  • COMO VERGRA TE ACOPLAS A ESO

  • my right ear is sad

  • That music has nothing to do with polka. The first song's melody reminds to it, but that's a single song.

That's just a demonstration, but, believe me, the Bulgarian folklore music has much more to show you. Basicly there are 7 regions with different style, ornamentations, etc. But unfortunately you will never hear a song from some less popular Bulgarian regions (although their music is amazing). I have 6 000 Bulgarian folklore songs and I don't have many songs I know...

  • If I get married this will be the music played! this is crazy

  • Ivo Papasov has a very unique style, just like Eddie Daniels,Buddy de Franco,Evan Christopher. That's what makes a musician great in my opinion!

  • I taped this when it aired, and I still play it for other musician friends of mine just to watch their jaws drop! The fact that they do all this stuff and make it groove too is all the more impressive. I'm still amazed!

  • the guitar player is a freaking monster. can't believe how he's slaying those rhythms.

  • He suks

  • HOOOOLY SHIIIIT!!!!!! how do you come up with stuff like that!

  • Wow!!!! That was great!

  • Nai dobria xD

  • The guy who doesn´t give a fuck at 5:52!

  • @Niclas141 5:57 And not a single fuck was given that day.

  • i dont think ive ever heard anything quite like this. incredible. one of the good things about youtube and the internet is being able to hear great music from all over the world. this guy is great.

  • Its almost hard to believe that you guys are so blown away by this. Here in Bulgaria you can hear such bands everywhere and we are used to this music. Anyway, I'm happy that you like it! Come to Bulgaria and you will be able to listen to stuff like this all the time :D

  • @artemortis Folk and polka music are really underappreciated in North America =/

  • I can't totally agree with you. I know that to an unprepared ear balkan folklore is more awesome than to a person listening to it since birth, but still, to say that blgaria is full of people that play like ivo papazov it's overstatement.

  • @artemortis so, like... when you listen to regular boring 4/4 music, do you get blown away too? hehehe

  • @artemortis Yep, I play in Serbian and Bulgarian band, and this is nothing new lol

  • man i was looking for these three opra guys tht sing amazing and i get this!!

  • Beautiful music!!!! Balkan soul!!!!!

  • Damn It...... I QUIT.

  • beyond amazing

  • hey yeah. I can see why seve vai has a bonner for this guy! Ivo is out of his mind and amazingly so!

  • This is too intense for somebody's mind but this is the life of the soul!!

  • ivo papazov---bravissimo!!!!

  • I just can't understand.

  • That's some intense wedding

  • Saw this when it was new...blew my mind then, still does today...

  • girl actually sat down half way through it!!!

  • 2/4 3/4 6/8 12/16 7/8 12/16 ETC ...lol !

  • Comment removed

  • Steve Vai was right.. these guys are completely out of their minds! In a good way though.

  • @sLevnZelevn hahahah man his vid is the EXACT SAME reason i came to this vid@!@#(*$^#@(%*&!@$^@!(*RYHDJOEL:DKCSAH

  • It makes me want to dance....

  • tääki on tosi kovvaa kammaa t: sikapena

  • is there a time signature in this song?

  • @Heretiik the time in this is incomprehensible... i think the drummer is just hitting cymbals randomly.

  • @Heretiik Welcome to the wonderful world of mixed meter (and complex meter at that!)

Mixed meter apparently isn't out of place in Bulgarian folk music --

    /watch?v=aha1W_wJl2M

    /watch?v=HL79yoUWAhg

Couldn't tell you the exact meters Ivo's using, but here's another song of his I enjoy --

    Hristianova Kopanitsa (in 11/8) -- /watch?v=PcQza58FEr0

And here's a pretty good rock cover of it!

    /watch?v=4uFP0w87S5M

  • Anyone that can cover this song on any instrument = VIRTUOSO. WHAT TIME SIGNATURE IS THIS!!!?!?!?!?!?!?

  • These guys are the Rush of folk music.

  • what is this for signature?

  • @liamzuid xqw/woozah

  • @TrueVideo F U

  • @liamzuid O K

  • @liamzuid a lot of them changing :)

  • i fuckin love this music so much!!!

  • stra6na rabota e toq ivo papazov! prosto bog na klarneta!

  • If Steve Vai played clarinet and never found the guitar this would be him.

  • this is fuckin mental... 6:00 thats jordan rudess' older brother :D:D:D

  • Guys! This is not polka or acid polka or whatever you called it ... This is Bulgarian Folk music ...Wedding music!!! It's a lot of FUN! :)

  • That's David Sanborn doing the intro. Steve Vai is right, these guys are on a constant Red Bull high. These time signatures are off the freakin' charts, and they play like it's nothing. I really like when they come in right after the woman sings the first verse. They should call this "Acid Polka". I'll bet when these guys play, people dance their asses off. There is much musical knowledge to be found here. This is a great lesson in itself. Like is said...of the frealin' charts!!

  • @KILLERDYNOCRUISERS You should see how us Bulgarian folk dance to this stuff.

  • beny hill music or more apropriate burlesque music

  • is this progressive polka? =)

  • canta frumos si este nr1 din romania sa moara mama daca te mint

  • is that steve vai in the beginning

  • @oehaha hahahaha

  • thumbs up if you find it hard to follow the beat

  • These guys are incredibly awesome

  • This is rock n'roll.

  • Hermosoooo!!!

  • so this is what that italian guy was talking about ;)

  • BRAVO YVO POPAZOV! BALCANS=the best music

  • Yes, on the drums is Stoyan Yankulov, become famous achieving 5'th place for Bulgaria on Eurovision 2007 in Helsinki.

  • I like it :)))))))))))))))

  • Your brain develops more synapses in the attempt to comprehend the poly-rhythms. My mind is sufficiently blown.

  • stranger than fiction you couldn't imagine anything more crazy. this is insane, i'll steal from Vai stealing from these guys is gonna give me a headache!

  • @barasui33 this is concert performance and there is a nice rhythm! maybe your legs are out of rhythm, or the people who are dancing are drunk :D Ivo is great and only one in the world! And be aware of this kind of comments if you don't get with the music...

  • Crazy !!!

  • this is just.....not fair.

  • I really likt it!

It's totally different than anything I've ever heard.

  • @barasui33 doesn't have any rhythm??? this is loaded with lots of rhythm. it's just in odd time signitures with lots of polyrhythmic stuff

  • claps the hands

  • така ли ми се струва или наистина на барабаните е Стунджи

  • @supersonicbg Барабанистът се казва Салиф.

  • obicham mnogo bulgria

  • Evala be Ivo !!!!! Super zdravo izpulnenie !

  • BRUTAL! bravo.

  • it just sounds like a jumble of notes. They are good at their instruments to be sure, but the music is, in my opinion, very strange and not very enjoyable.

  • @seemeel

I love it, I got inspired to write something close to it!!

  • thumbs up if you watched this after watching Steve Vai - "Freak Show Excess" Demonsration

  • @leer2112 LMAOO sooo trueeee we all just typed in bulgarian wedding music and this was the first video on the list.

  • @leer2112 haha yea man, steve vai!

  • @leer2112 haha yea man, steve vai!

  • @leer2112 Lol haha i did swell

  • Did these guys just destroy every technical prog band ever just then?

  • MONSTROUS

  • Saw this live...blew my mind totally...love the 'bridge' at 1:30...still incredible almost 20 years later

  • oh i was also just looking for this musik because of steve :D

  • the singer has an incredible voice . I never heard such vocal ornamentation

  • At my wedding, my mother broke her hip trying to dance and my brother in law had a seizure.

  • teachnical prog folk? ;D

  • @LaBre4 HAHAHA!

  • HOOOLLLLLLYYYYYY S@@T!!! This is ETHNIC MUSIC? This is as complex as Frank Zappa TIMES Gentle Giant... Squared! I'm gonna have to track this down, I was ROTFL and s@@ting my pants in fear at the same time!

  • WOW no shit

  • I JUST WASTED 6 MINUTES AND 43 SECONDS OF MY LIFE BECAUSE I JUST COULDN'T STOP WATCHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I HAVE TO CHECK AND SEE IF MY BALLS ARE STILL HERE.

  • What the---!? I want to take that clarinet and drop Ivo butt-first on it from a 5-story building

  • nomer 1 saaa ;)

  • electrifying!!!!

  • Very unique musician

  • i dunno who claimed this is made up on the spot, but the time signatures used are 9/16, 15/16 etc in crazy tempos, no way that's gonna be improvised.

  • @jussisaurio Our folklore music is based on such time signatures and complex ornamentation. They are so good because they play this music from many years.

The most music in this video is improvised at the moment of playing. The rest are known melodies, but with ornamentation which is made again at the moment of playing.

  • I'm going to need facial reconstructive surgery because this just melted my fucking face!

  • I think this just crushed my balls

  • nr1...

  • this isn't fast or complicated enough.

  • Imagine if you had to transcribe this....lol. the manuscript would be as thick as 'War and Peace'.

  • I'm in love

  • This is nice on speed.

  • If I could translate my brainwaves into music, it would sound like this.

  • @EarlMcCrackin you must be thinking some pretty weird thoughts! lol

  • Best ever, speed jazzcore kill em bulgarian! Great!

  • I really like that woman's singing.

  • so then. who is watching this because of vai? its pretty crazy and cool!

  • @Guitareben Im watching coz of Vai

  • i wathin cause of vai.. lol he made it popular

  • I remember seeing this when it first aired (1990?) and I'm still as knocked out by it now as I was then. Amazing.

  • Viva Bulgarian music!!!

  • Nai-dobriat!!!!! Svalqm Shapka....Exelente!!!!

  • trippy.

  • That guy is playing his keyboard WRONG WRONG WRONG! Ha. Actually, he's the last person I'd want to argue with about how to play a keyboard.

  • Dude didn't play the clarinet as much as he just straight finger-banged it for a good 7 minutes. Jesus.

  • LOL!! Good inspirational source!!

  • super

  • I'd definitely hire this band to play at my wedding!

  • Good balkan music!!

Good played, it's realy hard to play.

  • Awesome!!!

  • I had the chance to play with the saxophonist in the Video (Yuri Yunakov) on few weddings and he also played on my wedding, i met the rest of the band few times. They are great, i dont know where the rest of them are but Yuri is here, few miles from me, in USA.

  • Steve Vai realy likes these guys.I`m from Bulgaria and i`m a little bit sick of this music because they are listening to it every where in Bulgaria but not that bad : )) When Steve likes it i like it too :d

  • If I ever get married i will bypass my Cuban Heritage for this

  • Steve Vai is right; these guys are completely insane!

  • @rkkrah HAHAH Thats like the only reason I'm watching this, you saw the Freak show excess video right?

  • This has got to be one of the nuttiest styles of music I've ever heard.

  • Id like to see how people dance to this Interesting piece.

  • Hi !Search for Bulgarian national dance . Tnx

  • just like the guy in Tetris

  • Hi search for 'Shopski tantz 1300 jahre Bulgaria search for 'Beautiful bulgarien girl playing bagpipe

    tnx

  • Just type Хоро or Horo in the search bar :P

  • This mind numbingly incredibly awesome. I make my living as a musician and this makes me feel completely inferior. How do these people even go about learning this tune?

  • My friend, it is all improvised, or mostly improvised. If everyone knows what they are doing, what need is there for written music?

  • really? maybe a lot of the notes, but the structure and chord progression has to be planed out. the timming is to insane to improvise, or at least it sounds like it to me

  • this is the typical timing for bulbgarian folk music

  • yea listen to the bass and drums at :57 - about 1:25. way to chordinated to be made up on the spot. that shits hard to learn

  • it's pretty hard to take!

  • WOW!!! Possibly only Artie Shaw could come close this kind of virtuosity....

  • this guys stuff is 100 percent better than those orchestra shit...

  • What he plays by 03:42 is just mind blowing. Wonderful.

  • Folk jazz ;)

  • Well I think Zappa would have loved that! How many time signatures in 6 1/2 mins and tight as a camels arse in a sandstorm!

    Great stuff

  • Zappa was a big fan of Ivo

  • "Ivo's album of wedding music, played

first thing in the morning, provides

    thorough and long-lasting attitude adjustment

for the busy executive" - Frank Zappa

  • Just so crazy..! I like!

  • shred!!!

  • Incredible music; too bad people have to argue that it's "nothing special". Try just listening a few times before you rush to compare it to what you already know. It's natural to look for familiar reference points, but best to refrain from that if you really want to experience it, like anything in life.

  • 1:24

What a killer riff, plus that guitar's surf rock sound is just too awesome.

  • Trying to dance to this would be a bit tricky...

  • This is intense :O

  • LOL @ 5:33, that keyboard's life expectancy must be short.

  • this is metal.

  • Boooh yeeeah, this is as prog as it can get!!!!

  • Wow

  • I"ll divorce and will marry again (don't know whom;-)))) as Ivo to play on my wedding!!!!! it's my dreamt dream

  • I've just been sound fucked.

  • I want to marry the female singer.... :) Браво и благодаря scmm42!

  • This is the most hellbent music I've ever heard. Nothing compares

  • can someone please map out all the time signatures on this track so i as a drummer am not so lost??? lol, then if someone dares - try to map out all the chord changes too????
