to all fans of ivo papasov......bulgarians are constantly trying to steal his real identity which is ( turkish born in bulgaria) thatswhy his music is what it is amazing..
That music has nothing to do with polka. The first song's melody reminds to it, but that's a single song.
That's just a demonstration, but, believe me, the Bulgarian folklore music has much more to show you. Basicly there are 7 regions with different style, ornamentations, etc. But unfortunately you will never hear a song from some less popular Bulgarian regions (although their music is amazing). I have 6 000 Bulgarian folklore songs and I don't have many songs I know...
I taped this when it aired, and I still play it for other musician friends of mine just to watch their jaws drop! The fact that they do all this stuff and make it groove too is all the more impressive. I'm still amazed!
i dont think ive ever heard anything quite like this. incredible. one of the good things about youtube and the internet is being able to hear great music from all over the world. this guy is great.
Its almost hard to believe that you guys are so blown away by this. Here in Bulgaria you can hear such bands everywhere and we are used to this music. Anyway, I'm happy that you like it! Come to Bulgaria and you will be able to listen to stuff like this all the time :D
I can't totally agree with you. I know that to an unprepared ear balkan folklore is more awesome than to a person listening to it since birth, but still, to say that blgaria is full of people that play like ivo papazov it's overstatement.
That's David Sanborn doing the intro. Steve Vai is right, these guys are on a constant Red Bull high. These time signatures are off the freakin' charts, and they play like it's nothing. I really like when they come in right after the woman sings the first verse. They should call this "Acid Polka". I'll bet when these guys play, people dance their asses off. There is much musical knowledge to be found here. This is a great lesson in itself. Like is said...of the frealin' charts!!
stranger than fiction you couldn't imagine anything more crazy. this is insane, i'll steal from Vai stealing from these guys is gonna give me a headache!
@barasui33 this is concert performance and there is a nice rhythm! maybe your legs are out of rhythm, or the people who are dancing are drunk :D Ivo is great and only one in the world! And be aware of this kind of comments if you don't get with the music...
it just sounds like a jumble of notes. They are good at their instruments to be sure, but the music is, in my opinion, very strange and not very enjoyable.

The most music in this video is improvised at the moment of playing. The rest are known melodies, but with ornamentation which is made again at the moment of playing.
I had the chance to play with the saxophonist in the Video (Yuri Yunakov) on few weddings and he also played on my wedding, i met the rest of the band few times. They are great, i dont know where the rest of them are but Yuri is here, few miles from me, in USA.
Steve Vai realy likes these guys.I`m from Bulgaria and i`m a little bit sick of this music because they are listening to it every where in Bulgaria but not that bad : )) When Steve likes it i like it too :d

Incredible music; too bad people have to argue that it's "nothing special". Try just listening a few times before you rush to compare it to what you already know. @Heretiik Welcome to the wonderful world of mixed meter (and complex meter at that!)
Mixed meter apparently isn't out of place in Bulgarian folk music --

Couldn't tell you the exact meters Ivo's using, but here's another song of his I enjoy --
Hristianova Kopanitsa (in 11/8) -- /watch?v=PcQza58FEr0
And here's a pretty good rock cover of it!
