This was a great commercial and I recall it being reflective of a marked change in styles and fashions ushered in with the early 1980's. The pendulum swung away from the drab, earth tones; exagerated, bold colors; and the let-it-be looks of 1970's back to the cool and sophisticated, dressed-up fashion being ushered in the 1980's. Men were wearing suits and wingtips and women were wearing skirts and dress. Formal wear was booming.
@gspinc1 I loved this Commercial when I was Sixteen. I'm not sure but could someone please tell me if the Male Model at the end was Jeff Aquilon. I heard that he was the first Male Supermodel before Markus Schenkenberg or even Tyson Beckford. Oh, here's another fun fact. The African American Man made History by being The First African American on the Cover of GQ Magazine.
@laminage I don't know if that is the Male Supermodel, Jeff Aquilon (I googled Jeff Aquilon and immediately remembered him...OMG: he was gorgeous!!) I was 14 at the time this Ban commercial aired & didn't know who the "male it" models were in the early 80s. It wouldn't surprise me if all of the male models in this ad were the best of the best for that time. Thanks for the fun trivia facts about this ad!
@gspinc1 Oh, here's another fun fact. The African American Man would be featured in alot of African American Magazine's Fashion Section from Ebony, Ebony Man (which no longer exists : - ( He was also featured on a Coffee Table Book about the changing Style of African American Fashion. From The Zoot Suit to The Superfly Inspired Fashions of the 1970's to The Hip Hop Clothing to The Buppie Generation.
@laminage Well, thanks for that...Who knew?!...He is certainly an extremely handsome guy. I'll have to google him. I wonder what became of him and the other male model, Jeff Aquillon and by the way, what a great surname, Aquillon. It has a very cool ring to it. I remember another "it" male model of the 80s; he was a blond and appeared in dozens of ads & TV spots. He was the poster boy for Izod-Lacoste. Do you remember him?
I figured out who the male supermodel was of the 80's who was so adorable; his name is Michael Ives. He was amazingly handsome and his face seemed to be everywhere in the 1980s and for some reason I keep remembering as the face for Lacoste.
These were the Male Supermodels of the 1980's: Bruce Hulse, Michael Ives, Jeff Aquilon, Todd Irwin,
Bill Curry, Nick Constantino, Scott Benoit, Tommy Preston, Renauld White.
@gspinc1 Wow, you really did your research : - D. Oh, you know who I loved in the 1980's. Pole Vaulter Tom Hitinaus who did the First Calvin Klein Male Underwear. It was so controversial because Men admitted that it turned them on and it made them question their sexuality.
@laminage You helped spur on my research! Your post about 80's male models brought back memories of GQ and Details magazines from my high school and college years. I recalled 80's male super models but did not know their names. They were so super clean-cut, lanky and not muscle-bound but gorgeously toned much like the portrayals of the male form taken from Greek and Roman classicism. I recall that CK ad; Tom Hitinaus was amazingly hot. Thanks for sharing that bit of fashion history.
@gspinc1 Oh here's some more fun facts. Did you know that Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and in later Years Tommy Hilfiger helped contribute to "Hip Hop" Fashion. Remember how guys would buy extra large Jeans and show off their Underwear. It was considered to be so cool. Also, Kevan Hall who tried to revitalise The House of Halston is the Brother of Vondie Curtis Hall who was one of the Original Actors in Dreamgirls on Broadway.
@laminage Yes, I remember cK and Lauren's take on Hip Hop but it seemed Tommy Hil really vaulted to the top with his Hip-Hop inspired fashions. His jeans reminded me of Salt-n-Pepper's Shoop song:
"I love you in your big jeans, you give me nice dreams; You make me wanna scream, Oooo, oooo, oooo! I like what ya do when you do what ya do You make me wanna shoop."
I didn't know that about Halston & Kevan Hall. I will have to google him & his brother, Vondie. Thanks for the very cool trivia!
@gspinc1 Oh did you know that the fellow at the end of the Commerical was also in a Commercial for Contact Lenses. His character was so sweet bringing his wife Breakfast in Bed and the Wife reciprocated.
@laminage I did not know that...Do you recall for what brand of contact lens? I'd love to see him in that...All of the guys in this Ban ad are outstanding & so handsome but in a very classic, clean-cut, fresh looking way...
the "Married With Children" theme song :)
