I get what you're saying. It does seem as though there's a distinction between civil and religious unions, whatever you'd like to call them. I've heard the option of allowing both straight and same-sex couples all the legal benefits of marriage, but individual religious institutions can decide for themselves whether or not they wish to acknowledge them. Maybe that would keep both church and state in their appropriate places on this issue?
A separate legal and possible religious status for marriage is already the case. If a male atheist chooses to marry a female agnostic, they currently can get a legally recognized marriage by the state, even though possibly no church would perform the ceremony. If a divorced male Catholic chooses to marry a Muslim female, they also can get a marriage license from the state, even though their respective religious traditions might refuse to perform the ceremony.

I'm a moderate libertarian atheist and do not endorse any religion at all. I'm just pointing out that marriage is supposed to be a Christian affair and not a state affair. You can't change the fundamentals of a religion. If you could, trust me I'd be up for it.
How is marriage a religious thing if straight couples can be married at a courthouse, by a non-religious government employee? And no, civil unions really aren't the same as marriage. As stated in the video, if you're in a civil union you don't have the right to go see your partner if they're in the hospital. They also don't have the financial benefits that marriage does, as well as a ton of other federal rights for marriages that aren't a part of civil unions.
By the way, most gay marriage supporters aren't trying to force churches to do anything they don't want to do. They, unlike the Christians who put these laws into place, realize that government and religion should be completely separate. Religious dogma shouldn't influence our laws nor shall civil laws restrict religious bodies, which should be autonomous. If gay marriage is legalized, it would simply mean that courts can wed same sex couples and churches can do whatever they want to do.
In no way is marriage a Christianity thing. Marriage was around years before the Bible and years before Christianity was even founded. And Civil Unions don't have the same benefits, not even close, there are so many rights that are granted to married couples that don't pertain to CU's. A man and a woman can go to a local courthouse and be legally married without dealing with the church in any shape or form, so saying marriage is a religious thing is completely wrong.

I get what you're saying. It does seem as though there's a distinction between civil and religious unions, whatever you'd like to call them. I've heard the option of allowing both straight and same-sex couples all the legal benefits of marriage, but individual religious institutions can decide for themselves whether or not they wish to acknowledge them. Maybe that would keep both church and state in their appropriate places on this issue?

If a male atheist chooses to marry a female agnostic, they currently can get a legally recognized marriage by the state, even though possibly no church would perform the ceremony. How is marriage a religious thing if straight couples can be married at a courthouse, by a non-religious government employee? And no, civil unions really aren't the same as marriage. As stated in the video, if you're in a civil union you don't have the right to go see your partner if they're in the hospital. They also don't have the financial benefits that marriage does, as well as a ton of other federal rights for marriages that aren't a part of civil unions.

By the way, most gay marriage supporters aren't trying to force churches to do anything they don't want to do. They, unlike the Christians who put these laws into place, realize that government and religion should be completely separate. Religious dogma shouldn't influence our laws nor shall civil laws restrict religious bodies, which should be autonomous. If gay marriage is legalized, it would simply mean that courts can wed same sex couples and churches can do whatever they want to do.

In no way is marriage a Christianity thing. Marriage was around years before the Bible and years before Christianity was even founded. And Civil Unions don't have the same benefits, not even close, there are so many rights that are granted to married couples that don't pertain to CU's. A man and a woman can go to a local courthouse and be legally married without dealing with the church in any shape or form, so saying marriage is a religious thing is completely wrong.

Thanks sarbum23, You are completely correct. Most people forget that state and church are SUPPOSE to be separate, but like you said, since most of the people in "control" are Christians it is hard to see that.

I'm for marriage equality BUT something here leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Is this a gay teacher using his students for the cause. Kids will want / do / think whatever their authority figures say. Just like a child shouldn't be made to conform to a religion - I honestly don't think they should be used to lobby for law changes. I know he said the kids brought it all up but ummm ok, not sure I believe it.

I'm all for equal rights, but I also believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. Don't heterosexuals also have a right to preserve marriage ?You say its not fair, well its not fair to take a religious heterosexual faith and change it just because you feel its unfair. Take all the benefits of marriage, just call it something different. If you actually paid any attention to the equal marriage argument instead of ignoring it simply because it isn't your personal opinion, you would realise that gays and lesbians do NOT want to change faith. They are NOT asking for, nor have they ever asked for gay marriage in a church. All they want is the legal recognition of rights that applies to any heterosexual marriage.

It is TOTALLY separate from any religious organisation. You Americans seem to forget that in your 'oh so great' country church and state are separate entities. That means CHURCH and LAW are different things. They are appealing to the state, not the church. It just so happens that the majority of lobbyists in the US are Christian and therefore have a much bigger say in the laws that are passed.

If we're going to keep marriage between a man and a woman, why not preserve a man's right to have a job, and keep women at home. Why not preserve a white persons right to have a seat on the bus and let the ethnic minorities walk?

I almost in tears. This is the kind of love we should be teaching our children. This makes me hopefully, if a child of striaght couple can put together this knowledge at such a young age, then hopefully the future for homosexuals like myself will be less painfull and bright. It all comes down to the fact that if two people feel love/attraction for one another and are of legal marriage age, it is not anyone's place but theirs to say if they can or cannot celebrate that love through marriage or sex. So you find it gross/weird/creepy, so what. You're welcome to feel that way. But the point still stands that love is love and denying a couple their civil rights is un-American and un-Christian.
