Dear Aman,

Yes, the 'Correlation-Causation' fallacy was one of the first things that I learned when studying pschology, and I face palm to the point of knocking myself into a coma when I see people making the very same kind of claims that you were using in this video to illustrate your point.

After that, I HeadDesk when they hit back with "Occam's Razor." But it's the simplist 'Solution' that's usually the correct one. Not the simplist 'Assumption' based on ignorance and bias.

yea, I find that most misunderstandings in arguments come from false interpretations of assumptions and/or a failure to recognize correlation vs causation. It's really annoying when I have to show people on both sides of any debate why they're half right and half wrong. but that's usually the case =) What is "Occam's Razor" ?

Thanks for the reply, and "Occam's Razor" is the nickname for "The Law Of Economy," as described by the old axiom that "The simplist solution is usually the correct one."

The idea is that if you have 2 theories, 2 designs or 2 solutions which both seem equal, you should choose the simplest. The term "Razor" refers to cutting away the excess. But just as people twist "Natural Selection" to justify their prejudice, they twist "Occam's Razor" to justify their ignorant assumptions.

I was questioning for a while what direction you were headed, but I've actually had a marketing research course in the past that used the same issues of Ice-cream sales vs crime/murder rates, in order to prove a similarity in pattern does not equal a certain correlation. Often these situations come from far fetched hypothesis though, so generally they can be discredited rather easily.
