Oh my. This is a heavy-weight soprano combination. Their voices gel suprising well, considering both have adopted a soprano role. Sutherland's voice had got very heavy at this point in her career, and Caballe too had matured into spinto territory. Great stuff.
u know, great artists etc, but nothing can touch the blend, harmony and synchronicity of Caballe and Verret in any duet they do....sutherland and horne are great but the blend and harmony just cannot compare...to Caballe and Verret.
Very rare recording with two talented sopranos who sing an outstanding Norma. I must say I'm so used to Adalgisa being a mezzo-soprano instead of the pure, free sounding, perfect spun high A-flat of Montserrat that makes me melt. Sutherland's voice is heavier. I wonder if they tried with Joan singing the mezzo part?? It would be fun if there was a combo out there like that!!
@Yokeish sutherlands chest voice wasnt very well developed, and her bottom register sounded particularly pleasing, if you score study her recordings iwth scores you can see that she took a significant number of the low notes up an octave ebcause didnt like sinigng down low
I would have so loved to hear this recorded in 1964...That said, I love the way the two voices blend and match, and the power which both singers had (both recorded Turandot and sang Wagner) comes through in 4.08 onwards... oh for a recording from a decade or two earlier. Still, it´s now a youtube favourite.
Прекрасно поют, виртуозно, но мне не хватает тембровой разницы. Это дуэт все-таки для сопрано и меццо-сопрано. Послушайте исполнение Кабалье с Хорн, Сазерленд с Хорн.
Muy lindo..Since the original Adalgisa later on also sang Norma this is kinda what it was like back in bellini's day..But Sutherland (Not my favourite Norma, I must admit) sounds mushy but great for her age, yes. It is notable that while she lost her voice gradually her top was with her till last (not pristine of course but there) while with Callas for eg her bottom was with her till the last. All in all, a great performance..Though wouldve been even greater if done right after Turandot, in 1972
Two very great sopranos past their respective primes acquitting themselves honorably on sheer technique. Caballe ruins the opening with a plethora of portamenti but then floats that heavenly pianissimo and all is forgiven. Sutherland's lower register, never her best, sounded dry and hollow at this stage of her career. Ultimately, it all sounds efficient and proper but kind of mechanical and dull.
Oh, Sutherland's medium seems here a bit too lately recorded, it's smoky and dry, but the high notes are here! A good idea anyway to get these two voices together. Once there was the project to record Verrett as Norma with Caballé as Adalgisa.
Sutherland aporta madurez y experiencia.
What an unusual Norma/Adalgisa combo... kind of like the Verrett/Bumbry one where you get thrown by hearing two dark voices, here it's two light voices.
Both are unusual but still rather pleasant on the ears.
The beginning... Caballe's voice reminds me of a younger Sutherland, sort of. They match really great here, and Sutherland sounds remarkably fresh for her age (58?)!
Brava Montserrat Caballe

Caballe should have been the Norma and Sutherland as Norma, but with the statuesque I guess....

Most sopranos never have primes near either of these -2- great sopranos. With most they are primeless. Viva Sutherland and Caballe !!!!!

@ spencophany: I totally agree. Verrett & Caballe are the gold standard for this and for several other duets.

@spencophany have you heard Rosa Ponselle Marion Telva Mira o Norma. I think is the best version, even recorded in 1927.

Yes, they should have done this in the early 70's....Just imagine, based on their '73 Turandot, what this could have been like.
