Actually Zahid was clocked over 100mph in New Zealand long before Akhtar but the speed guns weren't sanctioned by the ICC as it wasn't an international match. Brian Lara said a number of times that Zahid was the fastest bowler he ever faced.

Shoaib said that Zahid bowled faster than him in 1997's and at the time his pace was 140s so zahid was propably in the mid 140's and that was zahids peak and akhtars start,his peak came in 2003 when he bowled in 150s without stresing his body that made it easy for him to carry on while zahid was bowling in the mid 140s and was stresing his body alot that caused the injury ,and even when he was stresing he couldnt reach the speed of akhtar when he wasnt stresing his body
Shoaib Akhtar played his first test in 1997 when Zahid was already out of the team. Zahid got his back broken right after the New Zealand Series in 1996 - 1997 and PCB refused to support him monetarily unlike the support in case of Shoaib Akhtar.
Zahid had his back operated twice and ankle operated once. Shoaib Akhtar (luckily) never had a back fracture.

Yeah! There probably is a fast bowler who can bowl 120mph off 2 steps. He's probably some cattle herder.
But pace don't mean a thing if you can't bowl it accurately or move it laterally.
However, I believe Zahid had the inevitable fast bowler stress fractures which have cut many a fast bowlers' career short.
