I have wonder the same. My culture is very shamanic..... I have always thought Guan Yin was a shamanic goddess because that is what is she is known as in my culture. She is known as a celestial being or goddess, the spirit of life, love and fertility. My culture is not based on buddhism, but rather taoism and pagan...... with Goddess Guan Yin as a very important fertility spirit.

@broadworldstudio Bodhisatva Avalokitesvara / Guan Shi Yin Pu Sa (in Mandarin) the name means The One who listen to the sound of the world. Avalokitesvara teaches all being to be compassionate towards each other so I suppose by listening to his/her name you'll be reminded to it and live according to it. Which one is more powerful? I dunno, i'm not sure if anyone here know either. but does it matter? hope this helps :)

It suddenly struck my mind to bring her to a monk for baptism and I will make a promise to Guan Yin that if my sister is fully healed and recovered and leads a normal live as everyday else, I will be a vegetarian and will not take any lives for the rest of my life.

If I were you I would offer to do a certain amount of mantras ever day or week or month, whatever you can commit to, and pray for the world. I believe that is a far greater service.

It is paradoxical in Guan Shi Yin... her purpose is to be vegetarian, yes, but if you are vegetarian - aren't you damaging nature? Guan Shi Yin believes that you should eat what you eat, but not harm any creatures. Eating meat is crucial to our diet, but not killing or harming any creatures as well as saving lives is her point of view. Back in the BC, people have written it wrong. They don't understand the real concept... I hope you take this and think about it.

@AznGurl747 study shows that meat proteins have direct link to cancer. If meat was so crucial to our diet, then vegetarians would have higher cancer/ heart disease rates. Major sport champions wouldn't have won. Also consider the amount of agriculture devoted to feeding ONE cow... 1 cow has to eat so much food per day, for several years. Then consider how many meals can a single cow provide humans. The meat industry is actually bad to the enviro. All the food we feed cattle can end world hunger.

There is likely nothing wrong with you, but there are definitely some inner reasons why Buddhist songs scare you. If you have any strong disbelief in the merits of Buddhist chanting or even an inner aversion to Buddhism, it might make listening to the chants disturbing for you. I don't know what you are feeling, so I cannot tell you what is causing your fear, but I hope you will be able to be more at peace. After all, these chants were mainly made to inspire, uplift and awaken faith in people.

I think if you sit there quietly and focus on the chanting and visualize Quan Yin Boddhisavatte's light covering all over you and be thankful to her compassion and kindness towards all sentient beings and may you follow her good example.
