@Nickamsweet You would be wrong. Not all DZs are as rich as Skydive Arizona. I, and many other skydivers I'd wager, learned stability the hard way. And I wouldn't have it any other way. :P
Gosh I've been on my back, not this badly, but badly enough to go down to the tunnel at Raeford, NC and get my shit squared away. Those guys down there really helped me out.
HAHAHA. I think you owe your instructor a beer for trying to kill him! Keep at it though! I had a lot of trouble on some of my early AFF jumps. Eventually it clicks for ya. Did you get through AFF7?
AHAHAHA nah i think my second 1 was the worst eva i jumped out bad arch and ended up on my back with head down to earth and at 3000ft no time to get stable so i pulled and the pc jumped between my legs along with the chute and the nxt thing i know im looking at the ground cause me right foot is cought in my left riser lol... it was an epic jump i must say
im a video editor, ive never skydived, and this guy thought quick on his feet, he went into a backward arch formation while on his back, i know alot of students who couldnt handle even that, he did great.
btw i have watched countless hours of AFF videos and you clearly dont even know what happend yourself! --> "and in the end he still pulled for himself (I think)."
eliasgerris, you don't know what the heck you're talking about. At pull time the AFFI is on the reserve side with a harness hold using his right hand but the camera doesn't show what happens, the evidence supports the student pulling. Moreover your comment that no AFFI would jump with him is the dumbest thing anyone has said on this thread. He righted himself once and dried a second time. I don't know an AFFI who wouldn't jump with the guy. You sound like a whuffo, certainly not an AFFI.
I have a personal friend who had an AFF jump far less sketchy than this. Not one single instructor at that dropzone wanted to jump with him anymore. He had to go all the way over to spain to find and AFFI and a dropzone (lillo) that would jump with him...
There are things that cause AFFIs to refuse students; attitude, awareness, demeanour and mental fitness are big factors. Dearching and trying to recover is not a make or break. When that guy landed his AFFI will have debriefed him, "what happened" if he said "I dunno" with a glazed look he could have been grounded. If he gave a blow by blow that matched reality he'd be back up after some instruction. The instuctors are always assessing your awareness. They TEACH you how to skydive.
and yes i don't know what im talking about, im 15000 miles away, what do you expect? how the hell can i know what happened from some bad quality video, at least im not saying that i do
I've explained to you what's on the video in detail the AFFI very clearly takes a harness hole on reserve side and then the main deploys. Perhaps he pulled for the student with his dick. I never claimed to *know* but I have stated what's most likely.
yeeez negative nancy! what's the matter, you got some sand in your vagina? chill the fuck out! i said what i wanted to say and i'll do it again any day of the fucking week, if he still jumps then he is definitely a better and more determinded jumper than me, and if someone puts a video of this HORRIBLE AFF online, then that person should expect to see comments like mine, deal with it!
elisagerris, you're the negative one who needs to chill. I too said what I wanted to say, when you make ignorant comments critical of skydivers you can expect a response. This video is GREAT, way more interesting than a typical AFF. Dearching and falling on your back is a common problem on AFF, it's why it takes 3 jumps with 2 AFFIs to even get a harness release. Go watch it with an instructor. I'm as free to call you on your bullshit as you are to comment on this video, deal with it.
i'm as chill as a cucumber :) i'm just saying this guy's AFF sucked rhino ass, if he made 100's of jumps and is a national champ now, then i say good on him, but i don't really care, in the end why would i ... Sure this video is great, it is more than great, it is awesome, way more interesting than some stupid AFF video where everything goed right
AFFI did good, the student had a spin due to asymmetric leg position, and that I think caused him to lose focus and dearch putting him on his back, but he had the good sense to *try* to arch again. None of this is inuitive, you instinctively want to fall on your back as this guy did, so he did OK fighting his instincts to give himself a chance, and in the end he still pulled for himself (I think). He just needs to learn to arch and get back on his belli if he flips. Thanks for uploading.

if you jump long enouh you will brake bones
if your in the sport long enhoh your gona watch people die and then you think you will die to you like the sport your gona kill yourself if you cant deal with that dont get into base jumping/skydiving
Basejumping and Skydiving are 2 separate things. With skydiving, if you're careful and always safe you'll be just fine. With basejumping it's not a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when" you'll injured or killed.
In response to petepepper........."! that fool went on to get 300+ jumps and a USPA D license in less than 6 months. wingsuit flying and demo jumps within a year. but he's only jumped about 500 times in the last 4 years, maybe you can convince him he shouldn't be jumping....................where did all this happen?? From what I have heard - he has been kicked off every DZ he ever went to!!
I dunno what your grudge is but this guy is a dearching AFF student. It's NOT a big deal, worst case they go over his body position again and put him out with 2 AFFIs again on his next jump to ensure he stays stable after harness release.
The level of AFF makes no difference at this point! Nobody in this position could do this on purpose! If not for the AWESOME JM - you might not have landed safely on the ground from this out of control mess!!...........Oh, wait, its you Sky, ur a f*ckn' idiot!!
I see you still haven't recovered from the head butt you rec'd at the Bent Prop!!
this happened to me on my AFP 2. i almost killed my JM and he just let go of me, and I pulled almost belly up. i jumped 2 more times after, and three more times the next day. instructors here in skydive chicago are very supportive; they won't allow you to quit.
man, where were you with your sage advice when he needed you?! that fool went on to get 300+ jumps and a USPA D license in less than 6 months. wingsuit flying and demo jumps within a year. but he's only jumped about 500 times in the last 4 years, maybe you can convince him he shouldn't be jumping... holla when you get off student status. ;-)
Ahh, yeah. I know they used to do that, but definitely before my time. I see frequently read comments on here from people who know next to nothing about skydiving, so I assumed that was the case... Do you know what level he was on in this video? Who was the AFFI?
that is not advice, its my opinion,i've been off student status for a long time.you shouldnt blame me for making that comment. when i saw this i just thougt this was like scot lutz,do you think he should be jumping? skydiving isnt for everyone.if this jumper made it to 300 jumps & still jumps then that is awesome for him and i applaud him for being so determined to skydive after this freaky jump. if this happend to me during my training i would have doubts about me jumping.
You need to watch more AFF vids, if he was OK to jump alone he wouldn't have an AFFI there. Many students have all sorts of problems flying stable, you will see that even though the student is on his back falling he still tries to arch and has the presence of mind to pull. He just needed technique and practice.
Dude he just dearched after spinning, heck the first time it looked like his AFFI helped him over, during your initial harness release jumps this happens. Nowadays he might be told to get some tunnel time but he would not be grounded even without tunnel time.
He's learning, nothing about this says he shouldn't be jumping, it just says he needs to get better before going to his next AFF level. No new skydiver knows how to fly his body.
dorbie, thanks for the support. as was said before, I did AFF in 6 days and got my D less in less than a year - my id is my D number. Stopped counting after logging 500 jumps. the inverted arch was intentional to slow me down so jared could get to me. I have come in hot a few times and pulled red 3 times but never got hurt. that is the reason I put the vids up - to show that it can be done and well even by a pizzabox student.
@adamg528i I was never one for paperwork and 500 seemed like a round number. When my son was born I packed for the last time. I have seen too many times first hand that even when you do everything right bad shit can happen and the thrill of jumping doesn't stack up against the thought of leaving my son without a father. Peace and blue skies.
@adamg528i it's not like i just never logged. if i jumped with someone new or something notable happened, i would jot it down and get some sigs and if i hadn't logged anything for a while i would get a few in so i could use my logbook at DZs that didn't know me but after getting D there was no compelling reason to actually track numbers.
@chanctonbury63 Well for me I only have like 44 jumps so i'm not sure what i'll do when (and if ha ha) I get up in those numbers. But I look at it as a long term achievement record and every jump just adds to it. I mean I might not get them all signed after getting all the licenses and ratings I wanted but I would still keep track of my number so if someone asked I could just answer on the fly and say "1764" or whatever it may happend to be. But thats just me Im sure everyone does it differently
