Why are banjos always on people's knees? How could they play them? And wouldn't it be hard on the knees? What's up with that?

  • What a great woman, what with the banjo and all...

Seems like I have heard "Shady Grove" with some of the same verses. Excellent version.

And like kc8afw, I don't think I know exactly what slack key means.

  • I've definitely heard Shady Grove with some of the same verses. Especially the "shoes and stockings in her hand". It's just that kind of music, isn't it? The kind that feels a little better and more homey decades, sometimes centuries later because it was never 100% new even when it was written.

  • ha ha....that is a most excellent way of putting it! thanks Matthew :)

  • thanks Yopps....

    could be regarding the verses....

slack key...1st string is dropped a step to make a chord

  • Ah. Banjo tuning *grin*

  • yup, it's the same eh?

  • what a great version...excellent singing

  • Excellent!! Love me some Burl Ives.

What, exactly, is slack key? I keep hearing the term...but I don't know what it is.

  • thanks KP....

1 string is tuned down a whole step :)

  • Okay, thanks. That's like open G tuning on the bari.

  • yessiree :)
