In the 20th anniversary release (in U.S. theatres) of the film, Spielberg had the gun references --both Dee Wallace verbally saying "No Guns, they're children!!" and any images of guns just as the kids went airborne-- removed from the re-print of the film for re-release in theatres...but I still think having the guns in the original film added tension and meaning to the movie.
Thats right, i remember Spielberg wanted to edit out the scene where the cop gets out of his car with a shotgun in his hand. He felt it was a too violent image for this movies tender heart.
Personally, I think Spielberg made the right call in removing the guns. A question that I ask myself is, "Why would cops have their guns out in front of the children? Even if it were just to scare them?"
Although, I am puzzled to why he had that removed, yet he kept in the line, "What's all this shit?"
Another good move I think Spielberg made was releasing E.T to DVD with both the 20th Anniversary SPED and the original 1982 unaltered version.
