George, why don't you list these amps on your website? You build almost every classic vintage marshall replicas, like 50 watters, master volumes etc. not just those that are listed on your site.
I guess you would probably have a bit more customers if you mentioned on your site, that you can also built MVs etc.
I'm pretty sure that there are some people who go on metroamp dot com, and say:
"woow nice amps. but I want a 2204, and metroamp doesnt seem to make them. Ok, let's check at ceriatone..."
Ceriatone is very good company. (I own their 50w plexi clone and I'm quite happy with it) But I've gotta admit this has something more to it. I can't say what it is.. sounds a bit more authentic or..vintage, I don't know. Wonder what to do with my Ceriatone to make it sound like this. Trannys? I don't know.
Wow, you guys are good!. What is that called when a Marshall picks up that bass on the A string? Are they tuned to do that? I love that sound. I used a MArk4 and it did the same thing.
i watched a lot of plexi tone vids in the last few months cause is was about too buy a used one for like 500 and kinda choosed not to do so. now i found this vid via youtube recomandation and im totaly back in... scanning ebay suxx so... anyway good sound man, and i have to admit good fuckin play at the end too.
I'm looking into buying one of your amps and was curious. What is the difference between the '68 era 50 watt compared to this '71 spec 50 watt? I like the tone you have on this.
@iperman68 Takitezy7 Dood ill be frank with ya. Ceriatone amps sound awesome, best marshal sound u can ever get for a cheap price. However one criticism, there seems to be something lacking (its like at 85% on an extremley fussy scale.) I never had purchased or probably ever will purchase a metroamp amp but i can tell ya just from hearing the sh*tty youtube quality sounds of these metroamps, they are up there if not the best sounding on youtube.
@rbehm With a kit you're the one doing the building, so it's up to you to do it right or not. I like that you can choose whatever transformers or other components you want to get the sound you like. Whether it's from Metroamp or Ceriatone doesn't matter that much if you're picking and choosing all the components yourself. How well you follow the schematic and how good the transformers are have much more to do with the sound of the finished product.
@charles1967 Fair enough, where is Ceriatone building there amps? and where do they get there parts? Metropoulos is from the U.S, and the parts they use are worth the extra money for the sound. They give great instructions on how to build the kits, I just know that I love Metropoulos, and I would only use Marshall's or Metropoulos. In my opinion. but very true about building it right or not. Just my opinion.
@charles1967 I find Metropoulos is about the heart, and the passion for the company, and making people happy with there products. I don't know, George has great passion for the parts, and for the sound, like having a real vintage Marshall, and making his amps sound just like the real thing, IS amazing. but then again, it's my opinion, I would take Metropoulos over any Marshall clone company.
@metroampcom But does it comes fully installed or we need to install the electronics in it... I'll probably buy one this summer but not as a kit that I need to build if it's possible to do so ;; XD
You obviously don't know too much about speaker cab miking and microphones!
His using a Shure 57 and that's one of the most common mics for recording electric guitar.
Only problem is, you've got to place it in the right way otherwise a good sounding amp can sound like crap wich is the case of many youtube vids like this one!
early/mid 70's basket weaves had greenbacks, you'd have to be smokin funny stuff to replace with G12-75's especially at low volume. would doubt if he had pre rola's in that box. Would be a good example of that amp at all to do this with 75's at this vol. But you could be right..
Given that experience, you could probably finish your amp in about 10-12 hours. We recommend breaking that up into blocks of 2 to 3 hours, but even so, I'm sure you could build your amp in a lot less time than you may think.
George, You make some truely awesome amps! Everytime I hear another one it makes the choice of "which one to buy first" more difficult! I have a couple of Fargens and recently bought some Scumback M75s and Scumnicos. They blow V30s away! Have you tried them? Keep rockin', I'll be a customer soon!!!
this amp is awesome!! i have a question though, is the base amp or is it with the upgrades or mods that you offer??? such as the mercury trans and reissue el 34's???? iv been looking at getting one of your amps for a while but didnt know if the upgrades were worth it. thanks
This is just a stock kit, updated from '68 to '71 specs--JJ tubes & Metro trannies. it's important to us that the clips represent what our customers can achieve by building their own kit.
how do you do the update from '68 to '71??? I dont see any options on your site for that. is that something that i could request when i order the kit or not????
We do sell this amp. We're working on a new website dedicated to my Marshall replicas. Which will have all new sound and video slips in many different styles.
Really, now? Perhaps you should do a little websurfing before you "shout" such things...
If you can find a like-new vintage Plexi with a tone that's on par with ours for less than $1500, by all means--buy it, send your address & I'll have my trusty winged unicorn fly it over to ya.
too much nit pickin here, a good player can make any amp sound good,, sure i love plexi,s too but we all need an want money, all the plexi clones i hear sound good, from sligo, to rocky top, ceriatone, trinity,, etc etc,, a real marshall has better resale,, like this old 1973 handwired metal face here, that needs a bit of work but still sounds fairly good,,but kinda fizzy farty distortion,, just needs tender lovin t h c, an a little attention,,
That's all you need to do. No need for the "one wire mod", or the "Jose" mod. Now having said that, I wouldn't spend my own money on a Marshall reissue when a better quality version is available from MetroAmp for LESS money. And the '68 Metro already has the aforementioned changes made to it already. I was just trying to make the point that a stock Plexi definitely can nail the VH1 tone without mods to add distortion. You just need to know how to set it up and use it properly.
They also have the Metalface V2a 1k cathode resistor value/no bypass cap instead of the 820ohm/0.68uF cap so those should be changed to Plexi specs. Then I've added a voltage dropping resistor in series with the B+ supply to lower the plate voltages throughout the amp to get a bit more distortion and introduce a small amount of sag/compression. You can also change the slope resistor and treble cap in the tonestack to Bass/50 watt values of 56k and 250pf.
The only other mods I do to make the reissues really nail the VH1 tone, is to change them back to early Plexi specs. I haven't been doing much amp stuff the last couple years so maybe this has changed, but the reissues I've worked on weren't actually based on early Plexi's, but on the Metalface from around '73/'74. They have twice as much power supply filtering (which doesn't allow as many harmonics to come through) which makes the amp sound and play tighter/stiffer, i.e.-more sterile sounding.
I've even taken the reissues and just jumped the channels internally, installed a post P.I. Master Volume (absolutely necessary unless you have an insulated home studio or isolation booth), and biased the EL34's to their sweet spot...then turned the bright volume to 10, the EQ all to 10, the normal volume to where it adds some warmth, the presence to it's sweet spot, and plugged in a 25.5" scale length guitar with a PAF style bridge humbucker, subtle phaser, bit of delay and it's VERY close.
I agree. There is still debate about whether EVH's '68 Plexi was stock or modified for the first VH album. The VH1 album is distinctly different in tone then all the rest. Less mids, more treble, and not nearly as much distortion as a lot of people seem to think. I don't consider myself an amp "guru", but I've been repairing, building and tuning amps in my spare time for the last 20 years or so and I can say with confidence that a stock Plexi/Metalface definitely can nail the VH1 tone.
Hey usta4070, great ears! This is good tone, but it has way too much lower mids for that early VH tone. The easiest way to get the early VH tone is to get a Plexi/Metalface era Marshall (or great clone like a MetroAmp) and "dime" the volume AND EQ (all on "10"). This scoops the lower mids and increases the treble. Since the tonestack is 100% passive it also increases the gain, which in turn hits the El34's harder and creates more distortion. THAT is how EVH got the VH1 tone out of a stock Plexi.
@GoogleEqualsEvil I am envious of anyone who has the freedom to dime their 50w heads...I get excited when I dime my 15w combo amp, so I think I would self-combust if I could do that with a marshall! As for diming the eq, why would the amp's mids scoop in comparison to the bass and treble if they are all set to 10?
@methanandamide Well I doubt self combustion would result, but the windows in your house might break. You can't really dime a non-master, 50w tube amp through a 4x12 cab without using attenuation unless you have some kind of insulated space like a studio / isolation booth / basement, etc. Or if you live at least a mile away from civilization. But cranking a non-master all the way up is where you get the great distorted tone from a Plexi style amp. That was the point I was making.
@methanandamide The EQ question would take me at least a page of comments to answer in detail. I don't have time for that unfortunately. Short answer...The Marshall EQ is passive, i.e. - subtractive. It doesn't add any signal, it subtracts it. The three controls (Bass, Mids, Treble) are part of the Tone Circuit, which is made up of resistors, capacitors, potentiometers and signal impedance. They all interact with each other to subtract signal by blending, instead of acting independently.
@methanandamide An active EQ does the opposite, it acts independently by boosting (adding) signal at specific frequencies. On the Marshall, if you change one of the frequency controls, it has an affect on the other frequencies as well (the controls are interactive). If you crank up the Treble and don't touch the other controls, the Bass and Middle frequencies will diminish because they are all tied together. If you download a Tone Stack Calculator for guitar amps, you can see this in graph form.
After doing a side by side with this amp and the real EVH unchained studio recording, it appears the metro has a little too much lower mids in it to be dead nuts but who cares, this is a wonderful sounding marshall clone.
you are not alone. i ordered my PTP along with some caps and pots. i rewired my plexi reissue 50 watt and now it seems to be sounding good, smoother and much more quieter.
Presence is basically a tone control on the negative feedback loop. The NFB essentially reduces gain and distortion, by inverting some of the output & feeding it back into the input, inverted. By blocking some of the high frequencies in the NFB loop with the presence circuit, the highs are a bit more pronounced.
what guitar on the plexi, most i know use humbucker gibson, i like strats best, my friend has a schecter, with tone zone pickups, makes my engl blackmore amp sound like yours, o what a tone,, so tell me,..
What do you mean there's no midrange?? Marshalls are some of the most mid heavy amps out there. Not to mention in the description it says he has the mids on 9...
This sounds pretty sick. I used to have a 71 SL which was my favorite amp. Sold it like a dummy. I'm about to buy an old Laney which sound incredible but I'm going to check your shit out before I buy anything. Your amps sound incredible. Wow.
Don't feel bad. 13 years ago, I had the chance to get a 1969 Super Lead for $1,500 (but it was modded though). I passed on it and went for a 1973 Super Lead instead which I later traded for a 1973 Marshall Major. The Major I still have, but sometimes I kick myself for not getting the '69 Super Lead.
Hi, the tubes are Mullard reissue EL34's biased at 38mA and Tung Sol reissue 12AX7's. The cabs from '75 and has black back G12M's. Newer cabs and speakers sound stiffer of course. And Vintage 30's have a drastic upper mid range boost.
Magic sound!!!

It doesn't add any signal, it subtracts it. The three controls (Bass, Mids, Treble) are part of the Tone Circuit, which is made up of resistors, capacitors, potentiometers and signal impedance. They all interact with each other to subtract signal by blending, instead of acting independently.
GoogleEqualsEvil 1 year ago 3
@methanandamide An active EQ does the opposite, it acts independently by boosting (adding) signal at specific frequencies. On the Marshall, if you change one of the frequency controls, it has an affect on the other frequencies as well (the controls are interactive). If you crank up the Treble and don't touch the other controls, the Bass and Middle frequencies will diminish because they are all tied together. If you download a Tone Stack Calculator for guitar amps, you can see this in graph form.

nice sound.

After doing a side by side with this amp and the real EVH unchained studio recording, it appears the metro has a little too much lower mids in it to be dead nuts but who cares, this is a wonderful sounding marshall clone.

what does 'presence' do?
menga111 3 years ago
Presence is basically a tone control on the negative feedback loop. The NFB essentially reduces gain and distortion, by inverting some of the output & feeding it back into the input, inverted. By blocking some of the high frequencies in the NFB loop with the presence circuit, the highs are a bit more pronounced.

Is there any mods you can do to make it sounds more like VH? And if there is can you tell me how much they would cost?

could I buy a kit for a 50 watt metroamp with 67' specs?
rockhard33 3 years ago
Yes, you can. You want the Bass specs option for the 50 watt kit.

Sounds dull. That other guy playing this amp with a Yngwie Strat sounded like thin treble.

You might prefer the triple rec type sound.

Please... What is the particular tube compliment? AX7s and El34s? And how is it biased (in mA)?
How does it sound through a newer 4 x 12s? Like Vintage 30's or how about G12H30? Are those heritage greenbacks or real old ones?
-Paul
PJBlandford 4 years ago
Hi, the tubes are Mullard reissue EL34's biased at 38mA and Tung Sol reissue 12AX7's. The cabs from '75 and has black back G12M's. Newer cabs and speakers sound stiffer of course. And Vintage 30's have a drastic upper mid range boost.

Hey you think that using Scumback 75m speaker's would do the trick?
jmsmxr2000 4 years ago
I heard that the mullard reissue el34s are supposed to be biased below 40mv. Is that true?
