The Krakowska gate was not an entrance to the ghetto. It was the entrance to the main part of town. Grodzka gate which is situated a little bit further was the entrance to the Jewish part of town which later became the Ghettto.
Yes I know. I've beeen living in Lublin for quite a long time.you probably mean jewish ghetto? Am I right? I just wanted to point out that Krakowska Gate was not an entrance to the ghetto. The old town(the part that reminded ) was the Christian part of the city. The jewish part was destoyed by Germans. The gehtto was partly situated in the "old twon " eg. Rybna , Kowalska. Krakowka gete was not the entrance to the jewish ghetto( it was a Christian part of the town )
Not entirely. The bulk of the ghetto was around the castle and parts of it still stood in the 1960s. It is today a park. Other parts such as Lubartowska still stand. The ghetto included parts of the Old Town as shown in the film and as is shown by plaques at various places there.
well,ok but these parts of the old town are not included on this film trust me. Bramowa , 'Rynek' was not a ghetto-that's for sure besides these map on internet i found are not very accurately drown. peace
Krzysiok is right. Krakowska gate wasn't an entrance gate to ghetto (Grodzka gate was) and streets like Jezuicka or Rynek have never been included to ghetto BUT still you've got enormous knowledge about places you visit and it's very impressive actually. How the hell do you know all this thigs? ;)
@alanheath Cracow Gate in Lublin is the entrance to the Old Town, not to ghetto. Lublin Ghetto was around the castle, where now is this big parking place, and where the bus station is. Ghetto was destroyed completely by Germans during WW2 after 1941.
Jewish people lived everywhere in Lublin (more than 30% was Jewish before WW2), but most in ghetto area, which was destroyed by Germans because of that. Jews, Poles, USSR citizens, and other
@MrOdrzut people inconvenient for Germans from Lublin and nearby was put in German Majdanek concenntration camp, and burned, gased, or starved to death.
Anyway - the real entrance to ghetto was Grodzka gate, separating it from Old Town. Old Town is between Grodzka Gate, Cracow Gate, and Trynitarska Tower Gate.
@MrOdrzut Obviously the ghetto is no longer there although part of it was around the castle as you state. This was partially destroyed by the Nazis but remnants were visible (I am told) until the early 1990s when they were finally destroyed. Nonetheless large parts of the former ghetto are still visible today as they were then.
Ghettos usually had various entrances, such as the Grodzka Gate you mention.
There is a map of the Lublin ghetto in the Imperial War Museum in London.
