i remember this well! i was 8 at the time and watched the whole thing from my nans house on high street west directly opposite the half of the mill that is now left, so was less than 50 yards away!

even seeing the old units and petrol station, where tesco petrol station is now, and the orange GMS bus, realy brings back memories!
Yes well before then. It used to be twie the size as it is now. It nearly reached the Globe at one time. The flats were developed long after the first fire.
I remember this when I was younger. If I remember rightly, there is houses on the high street about 100 yards or so away, and the glass in the windows had melted, and some had the brickwork cracked. made quite a mess of things.

wow! so theres been two fires then cos when it was converted back to flats it happend again
