I only did a two year term. I was just a seaman in 2nd Division Deck. That was my camera but I forgot who filmed this. I was a wog in the decks below.
My younger brother served on this ship during Viet Nam, I can't believe my eyes! He came back a changed young man. Prior to serving, he was proud and sensitive. No wonder he had an emotional break and was hospitalized for months. This is barbaric and unbefitting a US Navy sailor. I can onle imagine his humiliation as a young Black man from the South.
This looks weak. My grandfather still has scars on his head where they gave him a haircut with tin snips during wog day in 43. They also put him in water-filled diving boots - had a dynamo with leads put into each boot and gave it a good hard spin - zap! Fire hoses and wooden paddles. Face rubbed into the royal baby fat hairy belly covered in axle grease. He says it took the edge off of the war.
I was on the USS HARLAN COUNTY LST 1196 UNITAS XXXI the 30th day of August 1990, Longitude 081.47.2W. Went thru HELL! These guys are going through a product of hazing scare. what a shame! Where is the royal baby with the olive and lard? Costumes? Where is the baptism at sea? King Neptune? No one getting the sh#t beat out of them with fire hose and wooden swords!! Sad that We have pussified every damn thing. Did they even fly the Jolly Roger?
went through it in 1999, USS Frederick - USMC deployed; had various vingers and bbq sauce on my face and hair, then while trying to do exercises while having salt water sprayed upon us from the fire hoses at full blast, one sailor came up to me and shoved hot sauce down my ass. That burned like crazy! That was just a few of the stuff I remember, it was a fun over all, and wouldn't trade it for anything. I proudly display my plaque in my room for that day.
I served aboard Duluth 90-94. Became a Shellback during the 1992 Persian Gulf Deployment. In 92 the Shellbacks were still using the shellaylies to beat the wogs. The first hit I took was meant for the guy in front of me. The Shellback accidentally hit me in the face (eye) with his shellaylie. Hurt like hell! We had green eggs and ham for breakfast. The flight deck was covered with trash, crawled thru it. Had to get the cherry out of the fat Chief's greasy bell button. Bobbed for apples.
@midnite4x4 I remember all that. I was on that same cruise. Operation Kernal Usher. I was a Deck Seaman. I worked for BMC Borges and BM1 Holly. Wow that was a long time ago. Now I retire in 19 Days.
This is pathetic. I crossed the line in 1987 on USS Durham LKA114. Whatever happened to the garbage chute, the wog beauty contest, royal baby, the dunk tank, pushing a can of black shoe polish acros the deck?
Yes-very weak. I crossed on the sister ship to the Duluth, the Cleveland, (LPD7), in 1985, and it was much worse than this! Being whacked with shelelieghs, kiss the Royal Baby's belly, covered in grease and slime, crawling the trash chute, bobbing for pickles in the head-a joy, every minute of it! And finally, having to toss the uniform over the side for the damage! Ah, I love being a Shellback!
What is this??? What does Wog mean to the US navy/marines? because where i come from its racist, and what u are doing is racist and degrading to Europeans.
@Mz2wish4. Did you read the comments below? This is considered a sorry-ass wog initiation day. A few sailors been know to be killed in other intense initiations.
Were you ever in any Navies at all? What European country you come from that you never heard of this tradition. The new recruits get treated this way when they first cross the equator on a ship.
The British are masters of the sea for hundreds of years and they practiced it. I like to know what navy doesn't practice it?
@Mz2wish4, I took a few seconds to research and I see what you meant. I hear you.
The word "wog" in the European mindset is derogatory to non-white people in Europe; similar to "nigger" for American blacks or "gook" for American Asians.
In the US Navy, wog is actually pollywog. A wog is a sailor that never cross the equator before. When a ship crosses the equator, the wogs get initiated this way to become trusty shellbacks. It's a maritime and military tradition. Research it..
these candy asses did not go through anything like we did on the USS John Young in 86-87.Sad to say, I have proof on video and will release it soon. Sorry guys, you think you accomplished something but nothing like the real navy.
Respect to the forces... but this is really not that hard... i have fraternity brothers who did this and say it was nothing compared to joining a REAL FRAT!!! Try 12 weeks of it...
WOG day is done for one day, and has been practiced since he Vikings (a tradition that is older than silly frats). It is not done to the same amount of degree as back then, as their ways of doing it were brutal and life threatening. 12 weeks? Military has their own frat party for that called BOOTCAMP, 24/7!
what ever happen to the 1 month old trash that you had to crawl threw. I went threw after they threw in hot chili still got the marks. by the way FEMALE.
I showed this vidio to my dad He went through wog day in 1991 on the USS Ranger. He says thier shellback cards should be printed in pink ink. they are "soft shells" wheres the fire hoses? and the trash? How about the proper wog uniform? underwear outside thier pants? and wearing a shirt saying"hit me harder it don't hurt" these people suck!!!
What ever happened to tradition? In my opinion, those that were "initiated" as Shellbacks on that day should have their certificates revoked. Hell, it was tougher turning a 12 on 12 off in the #1 engine room.
And that was not uncommon. No garbage shute, electric cattle prod, royal dentist, royal baby, dunk tank, crawling on hands and knees all over the flight deck with a couple hundred Shellbacks beatin ur ass with a cut up fire hose while yellin "Hail Davy Jones". And if u screwed up u started agin
dialicrav, I totally agree with you and PHAEDRIDER that this is poor representation of those much more difficult Shelllback initiations in your days. I guess things change and we lose some things in every generation. My honest opinion is that King Neptune has gone soft. (For example in my Navy bootcamp, the drill instructors can't physical touch the recruits.) And in this very initiation, the Shellbacks cannot physically hurt the WOGs. Yeah, I'd say we got it easy.
Seize, appreciate the response. There must have been some shmuck, (Pentagon desk jockey),
that doesn't believe in tradition. Isn't it strange that soon after our initiation, we were right back off the coast of Nam receiving enemy fire from a V.C. shore battery. Lucky for us,they missed.I guess the Navy now doesn't consider that to be painful or inhumane had we been hit!I personnally would prefer a cattle prod over shrapnel. I don't recall anyone dying from a Shellback initiation....Later
There were between 800-1000 Marines with about 600-700 Navy guys onboard the Duluth at that time. I don't know your friend, this Michael Janavich. In time, maybe someone will see this video and know him.
I was on there in 2003 when we went to Iraq I was in the USMC at the time, I'm now in the USNR. Combat cargo rocks.....anyone out there know of GYSGT. MCCready
I WAS THERE!!!!!! WHO PUT THIS VIDEO UP ????? this when abdul freaked out and splattered the mess decks with all kinds of stuff (and had to clean it up.) i was already a shellback.. this was a pussy assed shellback initiation, captain even gave a speech about how much it sucked that we couldn't have a real one.. .that's me that walks by in the tshirt at 1:35 .i am truly amazed..i typed uss duluth and this came up. ..
This was back when it was fun to be in the Navy. Not anymore, It's a kinder, gentler Navy now. We used to cut up the old firehose's and whip those Wog ass's! watching these guy have to blow the water out of the tie downs bring back memeories, brings a smile to my face knowing I went through it the old school way. "Golden Shellback"
sorry , man, i was there for this. i had crossed 3 years earlier and we got our asses beat..this was lame in comparison..thats me in the t shirt at 1;35, there were no firehoses, no garbage,no king neptunes court.. no having to run to the shower naked with a black and blue ass after a 10 hour ass beating, proud to be a shellback.. there was a muster after this and the captain gave a speech about how lame it was that we could'nt do the real thing.
Hey Phaedrider, I agree with you in that , that was the lamest "Shellback" initiation I have ever witnessd. I crossed the equater back in 1971
and King Neptune and his royal court insured that as a lowly "pollywog", you definetly earned the title of "Shellback"! What I saw on that video clip was nothing more then a song and dance routine. Where's the pain man? Clarify if you can.I take it that WOG is short for pollywog, yes? Great ship, great times. FN Gallo A-Gang
what a "shit Wog day", first where is King Nep, and His Royal Court? Why are you not beating these guys asses. Why are all those officers/chiefs just standing in the background. The NAVY HAS GONE SOFT PERIOD!!!!
i was there, this does not even come close to showing how lame it was.. HOWEVER (comma) not ALLL the cheifs and senior officers can be seen on the flight deck...there were no cameras in the mainspaces............ i felt stupid telling people to do jumping jacks.. i would loved to make a couple of the junior officers my bitches for a day.. they'd of earned their shell..
oh , . i sure as hell AM a shellback! i was on board and already a shellback when this happened, i'm in the video, this day was an embarrasment., THIS was NOT my wog day. on board uss francis hammond (ff1060 a FIGHTING ship)on 14feb1992 i faced the REAL king neptunes court with an ass that was black and blue for a month from a morning and early afternoon of crawling around the focsle...
i sure as hell am a shellback, these guys were NOT!..
