This is the on tune that made me take another listen to this great sxaphonist. It was then that I realized that this man was a genius. Totally awesome tune.
@Jazzoidfusion89 "Not normal " is giving them the right to be called a "person", How could someone NOT love this playing, the force of it is enough to make you scream!!!!!!
Gato was the best soloist I ever watched here in Denver he play non stop over 2 hours without a break and move me to total joy I am ARGENTINE like him so GATO PARA SIEMPRE
Love this tune....I seem to recall Gilles Peterson playing it many years ago! I was lucky to find "Gato" by Mr Barbieri in an obscure record shop in deepest Barcelona. What a find!
This tune has always stuck in my mind for the example of how a "mistake" can make a solo. At around 3:35 or so he tries to wail on a high note but "flubs", or fails to have it come out, a couple times, but when it finally does, the attempts make it that much more dramatic, & it's always been the high point of this song, for me.... A little musical "wabi sabi", like Wilton Felder, almost bursting veins in his head, holding a note, wailing, far more impressive than one circular breathing forever.
Gato's political beliefs prohibited him from touring to the U.S. ,he's a socialist and I feel the U.S.gave him many obstacles atleast that's the way it was in the 70's & 80's.
A Great talented sax player,his own style,not a Sandborn,nor Harp,nor Koz,.
@carguymiami Actually, the story I believe Gato himself told, was that he had a really lousy manager, who just didn't get him much work, & it was very frustrating for him.....
Hey, have you guys heard "Secret Fiesta" off his 1979 Euphoria album. it sounds similar, maybe it was a sequel to this track, maybe Gato thought his song was his best as well that he tried to make another song in hopes it was a hit like this one. Similar to what Paul Desmond did with Take Five, he made Take Ten in hopes it would be a big a hit as Take Five was....
OMG ¬ how funky is his sound . . . that rollin sax, & his chants & yelps.! Can you ever imagine being able to stand still to this on the dance floor . . . I know I never could, & hopefully never will ¬ long live the sound of Gato.! !
Without a doubt, Gary King is one of the most slept-on bassists from back in the day, and I agree, he was AWESOME on this album. I think his work on the "Desperados" cut was probably my favorite on this album.
Yes Los Desperados was atrck track.I love gary's choice of effects to.He had the Flanger pedal set up just right.Fiesta was cool too. Gary did some fine work with Bob James also.
Just wanted to say that Gato Barbieri is the fucking man.Ive been listening to his music for more than 20 years and if it were not for him i probably would have never gotten into jazz... Adentro!
I can remember back in the late 70's WRVR a Jazz radio station in New York City used to play this over the air. I love this song! (dancing a very smooth Samba). Thanks for sharing LamontCJ - you da best!
I don't remember CD 101.9 ever playing this track! Not saying they didn't; I just never heard it. But they did play some other Gato stuff, like I Want You; Europa; Last Tango, etc.
hey alguien sabe de una rol aasi de este tipo qu va " tirititiri tiri tiririi tiririii tiririiii taratatara rara rara rara rara rara raaaa ra ra raaa" si alguien sabe cual es que diga
He's well liked here in the United States, his contemporary jazz- exotic, romantic, fusion...I've heard him back in the early 80's..I've seen him at a few jazz festivals here in California.
This is one of my all time favorite albums. If you have'nt heard this body of work - buy it, it's amazing. Thanks for posting it I'm going to listen to it right now
