  • i like the song playing in the background, but was that written by duke ellington

  • @musiclover0044

I believe the "Cotton Club Stomp" was written by Duke, Harry Carney and Richard Rogers.

  • I'd give my right arm to go back in time for just one night at the cotton club with duke ellington's jungle sounds around 1930.

  • @closedcircle1

Those were the the days when music was just that and not the noise we are served today as a substutite.

    Thanks for the comment

  • Lena Horne spoke of the filming of this footage in her autobiography. It was also used in the American Masters documentary on her along with a few other scenes filmed at the same time.

  • I love at the beginning. If you look closely, you will see a very young (16 yrs) Lena Horne dancing. She is in the middle of the whole bunch!

  • @pregomamagreen Employing Lena Horne as a chorus girl would be criminal under utilization of a very great talent. But I guess everyone has to start somewhere. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • @deriter64 I agree completely! But it got her in there and after that is history!

  • @pregomamagreen

could you post the time stamp as to where?

  • @MommaMagyar It starts about 18 secs in. Shows a guy getting out of a car and goes back to the girls dancing again at around 26sec. She is in the middle. Look for her beautiful smile!

  • It's wonderful to see these classic American tunes and images. Classic New York!

  • @starstuff

A "Bon Vivant" from Brooklyn would appreciate the old days at the "Cotton Club"

    Thanks for the look!

  • OWNEY MADDEN HAD VISION, OPENING THE COTTON CLUB, WHERE HE COULD ALSO SELL HIS BOOZE.

  • OWNEY MADDEN, AND BIG FRENCHY DE MANGE. OWNERS OF THE COTTON CLUB.

  • Great historic footage. Thank you for posting.

  • @TheBbinca

You're most welcome. Pleased you ennjoyed it.

  • at the 39 second mark is the great Lena Horne at 16 years of age

  • @952406lin

It well may be, she was 16 while working at the "Cotton Club", hard to tell precisely from the quality of the film.

I posted" Lena in1938" when she was 21

  • Amazing!

  • What a great tribute to the Duke! All those chorus girls! Awesome clips! Must have been so fun to be there back in the day! Thanks!!.

  • @JukeJointHop

Thanks, I see at your site you featured the song "At The Hop" by Danny and the Juniors, I posted them on video at my site under "Young Do-Woppers".

  • @JukeJointHop A great tribute indeed ! It would have been lots of fun IF you were white.....

  • @zappacrappa2 why is that?

  • Great!!

  • Great Find!

  • I see you have quite an interest in that era..

    Pleased you enjoyed!

  • Absolutely! I love Duke Ellington and I teach high school US history. I am starting a unit on the twenties on Monday and this will be helpful.
