For alot of us Born and raised in the 50's and 60's if we had only known then what we know now we never would have taken this music for granted. We had it every day and every lonely night. We listened and dreamed and never thought that it would someday be gone...Just like our cars, if only we could go back...I do believe that many of us would stay....Take our kids and our grandkids and just go back. IF ONLY.
This post may be taken from a TV special Burton Cummings did back in the 80's. The show featured Burton interviewing and performing with Del Shannon and Carl Perkins. In the show, Carl explained how he got the idea for the song Blue Suede Shoes. Carl saw a young couple on a U.S. college campus having a spat...the girl was giving the guy the business...getting right up in his face. He just stood there and took it from her, all he told her was: "Don't step on my shoes"!
Born Charles Westover in Coopersville, Michigan, on December 30, 1934, rocker Del Shannon claimed legendary country-western singer Hank Williams as an early influence, but his first record was unadulterated rock: the classic "Runaway" in 1961, highlighted by Shannon's falsetto and keyboardist Max Crook's wailing Musitron (an invention of his).
Del was so much ahead of the curve ............Burton Cummings was also a great musician and he is not on very much anymore . It was so sad to see him Go........so sad that people think of themselves and do anything to get what they want (his wife) why can't they sit down like and talk..........they started that way no need to get a jerk lawyer involved anyway so sad miss him and his music.......
DEl was so very talented....Depression took him away from us,,George Harrison sings about it in " Beware of Darkness" "Watch out now take care Beware of Thoughts That Linger," Winding all around Your head", They can hurt you"...its so true, Del was being harrased by his first wife's Lawyer, and God Knows what else.....THe Spirit, Our spirits are so important.....Beware of darkness, avoid it like the Plague..MIss you Del...
This is the definitive early rock & roll classic. Del Shannon seperated himself from the the rest with this one. I loved dancing with my girfriend Molly is junoir high school to this.

He said he got tierd of always singing 'Runaway'. I'd love to get to the day when I could feel confident about singing this song just one time - quite possibly the best pop record of all time.
This performance was out of this world good. As a kid back in the sixties I remember hearing Del's tunes and his distinctive voice. But this is the first I have seen him perform live. The voice was still amazing. And he had such great charisma too on stage. Great upload. Thanks for sharing.
he could've been bigger than deep purple if he just did what he wanted instead of getting signed by a label and be told to play "commercial" songs at that point of time
I vividly remember the ENTIRE rock and roll era and without reservation, I say that "Runaway" is one of the up-tempo songs of all time. A perfect combo of melody, chords and lyrics. I've never tired of hearing it. Brilliant.
Look what popped up on my Queue! (After this I'm going to play your new upload!) Del had a voice that could cut through the guitars, drums, and applause! Cool post!
Shannon suffered from depression and committed suicide on February 8, 1990, with a .22 caliber rifle at his home. I guess I can "understand" in a way why some people do it, but it's still so sad though. RIP- Del Shannon.
@elvisfan22 It just doesn't make sense to believe he killed himself. Those that knew him said he was in a good mood the day he died. I believe it could have been an accident and the coroner misread the evidence. Some of those guys are dumb as rocks or really just don't care and want to close the case as soon as possible without any real investigation or examimation of the evidence.
@samisunc As someone with an artistic temperament who has struggled with depression and addictions all my life, it is no surprise to me when I hear an artist struggling with depression AND an addiction to alcohol has committed suicide. You could never understand unless you've gone through it. Plus, you don't really know everything going on in his life at the time, or his innermost feelings. Only his family would really know, and even then not fully. Continued below:
@samisunc (Cont from above) Often once someone has made the decision to kill themselves, they feel relieved and happy - they know their suffering will soon be over. Read about depression, addiction and suicide and you'll understand somewhat. Not fair to blame the coroner - do you really think the family would allow his suicide to become public knowledge if they thought it was an accident? Why would they deliberately expose themselves to that shame if it weren't true? ,
The original version of Runaway that Del Shannon recorded was a brilliant piece of music without doubt. But this version, like what he recorded for the US TV show “Crime Story”, is much better with it’s grittier sound. I should also add that Del recorded a great, but slower version of Runaway that really does need to be heard to be believed.
Old music > New music ... Beatles/Elvis/Del Shannon etc = Stars... Well, lets look now.. Justin Bieber/Lady GaGa/Katy Perry ... wtf? Seriously.. Can you call that even music if you compare it to the old classic ones.. Well, I can't :) Tho I can't lie that I like also the new music, such as Linkin park and that sort of things, but still, this is the one what's music.. And if I would live in 60's/70's/80's, I can say that I would bring my lazyass to the concert of those..
Hi-Lo club in Battle Creek, MI...its tore down now, but the state erected a plaque commemorating Del where it used to be...born and raised here in BC...home of Post/Kelloggs...

I'm glad you appreciate it, my young friend. There are great songs from all eras, and this is one of the best of all time. I had the opportunity to see Del play in a small, neighborhood bar -- wish you could have experienced it as well. He was a wonderful performer.
@UnpleasantChuck ...... WOW!! yeh , i would have loved to hve seen him live but still!! i have his autograph on a original record, my dad has passed down to me from when he was in a town in bloxwich....but the important thing is that his music lives on , with out a doubt rock n roll like this CANNOT die out!!
@delshannon1996 Yes, it is fantastic music - arguably one of the greatest, if not THE greatest pre-Beatles hit ever! I was 11 when I first heard it, young friend.... I am 60 now. You see, I first heard it in February of 1961 and I live in Battle Creek, MI. There is a historical plaque downtown on the site of the old Hi-Lo club! Sadly, even a lot of people, old and young alike, around here don't realize our rich heritage that Del provided. I'm glad you do, kiddo!!!
@delshannon1996 Yes I am 58 yrs and this is my music era and thank you for loving it. You should see the videos of Bobby Vee, Lou Christie, The Righteous Brothers doing Unchained Melody!
@delshannon1996 Im 19 and find this music FAR superior to the torturous stuff that is released today! All this XFACTOR nonsense, tichy sryder, dizee rascal, jizzy mcspunk pants. All these stupid moronic black people who can't spell and the stuff they sing about is all about sex and nothing worth knowing. None of todays music will be remembered in 5 years. For instance, name a song that was released in 2005 that is worthy remembering? I bet you can't name one!
@delshannon1996 Im sick of kids thinking they are higher then others their age because of the music they listen to. Go to any classic music video and there is always some dumb kid saying "Well im 16 and no other kids I know listen to this" as if youtube really cares.
You can still go to Vegas today and sooner or later you'll hear this song proudly being played at ALL of the casinos. I know, I lived there for years.
Female bass player? Nope, that's Ian Gardiner, Burton Cummings' long-time bassist. This show was shot in Toronto, and was a Canadian Broadcasting Company (CBC) special starring Cummings called, "Goin' for Gold". Other artists on the show were Leslie Gore, Bobby Vee and Carl Perkins. And Chuck's right, Ian's playing a Music Man Stingray bass. I'm the guitarist on the far right (after the keyboard solo) with the ancient white Stratocaster.
@OriginalCascades What was that first record that was rejected that del mentioned in the interview max crook had a 45 I almost blew my brains out over you on big top records
I love the story of how it came together !!! The magical ear and the brilliance to know what would sell. A very smart man. A classic that will always be popular.
He was so cool. I'm glad that there are some who realize that their timeless hits will always be well received. Indeed this song gives no hints about any era and will live forever.
I think I love this vid better than his earlier versions. His voice was so strong, it didn't weaken with age like some singers. He seemed like a teenager when he talked about his music. He was such a great talent and very sad that someone didn't recognize how depressed he was. His final concert was a picture of a man depressed and just singing the words with no emotion. I feel so sad even though it was 1990 when he committed suicide. HIs music still lives on and gets new fans all the time.
@iainr79 please do you know from whon cause I found alot of Blue Moons and they werent that song this one has beats faster and these I found were like love songs hehe
Yeah, the melody is reminiscent of Blue Moon, but I wouldn't necessarily conclude that it's definitely what Del had in mind when he played that little snippet. Fact is, that chord structure is a very common one, used in countless songs over the years.
I think that for Burton Cummings playing that classic piece with Del Shannon was a big thing - perhaps we've all thought of playing with people we really liked (or at least the muscians among us). So I thought to myself - who would I want to play with if I had my choice. I know who I chose. Who would you choose?
More in demeanor and voice. Try comparing Del in this video to Neil in the first video that comes up when you search on youtube for "Neil Young Heart of Gold live"
fantastic!

It's a generic chord progression, heard on a lot of old songs. One, which Del gives a hint at here, is 'Blue Moon'.

@CABALOGrealmshackers @ 55 sec, he's playing and singing "Blue Moon", an old song that was covered by a lot of recording artists in the early '60s.

@delshannon1996 Good to hear, I hope you try listening to more of the old hits.
The movie "American Graffiti" includes a lot of both great actors and great songs of the old times.
This is my tip for you to watch, listening and enjoy.

Rockin Del (like gentle Roy Orbison) also an ace axeman, too modest to do killer solos he sometimes did on certain shows. " Rock it baby ! "

I love the story of how it came together !!! The magical ear and the brilliance to know what would sell. A very smart man. A classic that will always be popular.

Del was an incredible talent. He almost looks like he could be John Fogerty's brother! Del kept that distinct voice throughout his entire life.

Don't know who the bassist is, but it looks like she may be playing a Music Man StingRay bass. Do a 'net search and you'll see some pictures.

@caltor28: 5-string? Ace Queen Of Bass cud be elite L.A. picker Carole Kaye ?
DougPatton1 1 year ago
@caltor28: Del, like Roy Orbison, was a mean ole picker never given true credit - Rock It Baby !

@UnpleasantChick I found a somewhat closer version from Sha na na (1972 ver) but not as cool tho.
Thanks for your attention.

@iainr79 please do you know from whon cause I found alot of Blue Moons and they werent that song this one has beats faster and these I found were like love songs hehe
Thanks in advance!
ayahime2007 1 year ago
Yeah, the melody is reminiscent of Blue Moon, but I wouldn't necessarily conclude that it's definitely what Del had in mind when he played that little snippet. Fact is, that chord structure is a very common one, used in countless songs over the years.

Love Del--Too bad he ended his own life. He still was a great talent!!

I think that for Burton Cummings playing that classic piece with Del Shannon was a big thing - perhaps we've all thought of playing with people we really liked (or at least the muscians among us). So I thought to myself - who would I want to play with if I had my choice. I know who I chose. Who would you choose?

UnpleasantChuck 2 years ago
More in demeanor and voice. Try comparing Del in this video to Neil in the first video that comes up when you search on youtube for "Neil Young Heart of Gold live"
TimHornerWOP 2 years ago
Before my initial response, only similarity that came to mind was that Neil often wore shirts of the same type Del is seen wearing in this clip.
Since then, I've watched the one you recommended, and I can see your point, to a degree.
