Derailment was September 5, 1989. IIRC, this was one of the trains deadheading to Hamilton for the AM, it struck a stolen truck that had been left on a private crossing.
Impressive video, Dan!! Due to the fact that cars do not uncouple they were hardly damaged. In these crashes happen that uncouple cars, climb on each other, or "fold", while having strong damage.
What really sucks about this is that in 1978, the bi-level railcars (Bombardier cars) were first introduced to GOT. So, all of the cars in this derailment were nearly brand new at the time.
Wow, great vid Dan! Yeah, i never knew GO ever had a derailment. BTW, that can't be 1978. F59PH 521 was the power on that train, it was built until 1988. So maybe it was in 88? GO didn't have 8 car trains in 78 either and Bi-Level coaches were just starting to enter service. Besides that, thanks for the video! Its good to know what GO's encountered in their history. I don't think a derailment like that would happen now. GO's safety procedures are much more strengthened now.
Yeah, same here. I did some research and you are correct about the locomotive. The gentleman I got these from said they were from 1978, but I can't find any evidence of a derailment at all so I don't know what year they are now.
Wow! I was under the impression that GO had never had an accident other than a small "fender bender" inside the Union station when an incoming train came in too fast and bumped a train waiting at the platform.
RIP to those who died in the GO Transit Derailment in the Burlington area once again on Sunday, February 26th.

why did the train derail do you know?
firelitebg12L 1 year ago
Well technically this train was deadheading so it had no passengers aboard, maybe that's why

@dan9325 Either way, wiki should post it.

should have kept looking at slides before responding.... the lead unit was GOT 706, shot it at Burlington Station with the pilot & steps smashed in

Thank you very much for the correct information! I will add it to the description now. Did you see the actual derailment in person?

@dan9325
Yeah... got a few shots, very similar to those posted.

Yeah, but luckily most of the damage was superficial in nature.

Where did you get this video?
