Kaoru the heart of adam who was awakened by sheila to start the instrumentality and introduse him like a student is shinjis school but that made shinji and kaoru to be emotionally involved with each other .
some ppl would say that kaoru is gay but since angels dont have sex's that what kaoru felt was pure love for shinji...
(But i still think kaoru is gay .....and shinji? :)

Shinji isn't gay. In the manga, Kaoru actually kissed Shinji when he was hyerventilating in his sleep and Shinji flipped out.

Besides it was painfully obvious at that point in the manga that he was attracted to Rei. There's also Asuka. :P
