  • I almost forgot to watch this today. My favourite scene from my favourite TV programme.

  • So good i'm only 10 but every time I go to my mom's boyfriends house

he plays a collection of songs including java jive check it out ...

Jonah in the whale Noah in the ark awesome line

  • @simplymeele Don't forget "...Jonah in the ark..." "...to illustrate their last remark..." whatever that means here. LOL This is a classic and I think every line is brilliant and the setting with this actors dancing routine is noting but awesome. But when the song suddenly change too boogie-gospel I am in heaven! . ;O) BUT who in heaven is this mister in between one shouldn't mess with? Any answers?

  • @simplymeele My bad. I missed that you mentioned Noah and I managed to put Jonah in the ark. I better get myself a good rope and wave good bye cruel world.

  • I'd make myself ill if hospital was really like this

  • Best watched after a nice joint.

  • wonderful cheerful song of Bing Crosby with the Andrews Sisters. Could have been my device: Accentuate the positive, elimenate the negative, don't mess with mister in-between.

This scene is from the BBC television serie "The Singing Detective", one of the best series I ever saw on televison.

  • Oh Mr Potter what can we do without you..

  • A beautifully segued segment from the masterpiece that is The Singing Detective.

  • iT JUST KEEPS SAYING ON TWITTER THAT THEY DDDIDIDIDIDISOMETHING WQRONG, NOT HELPFUL PEOPLE.

  • Theres folk worse off than you always look on the bright side

  • Amazing. Just one of the best scenes of the show.

  • wtf??! - That is all

  • this was so surreal and gambon was just blinding with his dry delivery, there's nothing else like the singing detective

  • I used to love the singind detective in my youth and would love to watch it again, hopefully they'll repeat it on tv sometime. rip dennis potter, genius. x

  • thekatie40 -

    Why wait ?

You can get it for less than a tenner at Amazon !

  • @thekatie40 I love it too. especially the timing, the right imagery with the right music at the right time. I dicovered a few days ago that the serie is on DVD, so I bought it immidiately.

  • @123frizzlefry i couldnt agree more, and when i've got some spare money i'll buy it myself. I'd love my son to see it x

  • OH MY JESUS CHRIST THIS SONG DESERVES A NOBEL PRIZE FOR CREATING PEACE IN MY MIND!!!

  • I remember this mini series well. Absolutely brilliant piece of work from the pen of DP

Dont make them like this anymore because nowadays the norm is for unwarranted swearing & OTT violence.

  • Dennis potter genius nobody writes classics like TSD or pennys from heaven any more.

  • Roy Willox on clarinet.

A true Prime Minister of the London recording studios.

  • Best anything I have ever seen on television, and rivals many of my favorite movies of all times. The score alone is a priceless collection unto itself. : ))))))))))))))))))))

  • I just love, love, LOVE this song. Ahhh, so great, so goodt! First recorded by Johnny Mercer with the Pied Pipers & Paul Weston's Orchestra and released by Capitol October 4, 1944 and peaked # 2 on Billboard. Second out was Bing Crosby & The Andrew Sisters and released by Decca, December 8 1944, also peaked # 2 on Billboard. Many, many artists have done it. Ella Fitzgerald, Perry Como, Sam Cooke, Dr John, Gene Vincent (yep that early rocker!) et al. And, yes, The Singing Detective is brilliant

  • The 'guy singing' is Bing Crosby and he is backed up by the Andrews Sisters. The whole series is full of ironic touches like that. That's what can happen when one person writes a whole mini-series.

  • Who is the girl up front with the guy singing??

I know she is acting but watch the expressions on her face.

    She is really good.

  • we had to sing this song in music class im only in grade 6

  • A fine television serial (6 episodes) from 1986

  • I think that The Singing Detective is a brilliant piece of work. Many people that knew Dennis Potter well reckon it was an autobiography, though he always denied this. The story has everything, mystery, adventure, comedy, music and even pornography! Yes it's all there and so cleverly put together.

  • @britecho

Dennis is all the characters. ..they're all him. Anyway, entirely agree with your comment...oh how I wish we still had writers of Potter's ilk...I truly miss him, the greatest television writer of all time.

  • when was this filmed ? who's in it ?

  • The actor who plays Albus Dumbledore is the Singing Detective.

  • From 1986 Michael Gambon plays the title roll. One of the best and influential series of it's time. Though it should be said that it is revered more than it is watched. :)

  • As Paulmancieric67 said, I believe it was released around 1986. Stars Michael Gambon in the lead role, Janet Suzman, Joanne Whalley, Bill Paterson and Patrick Malahide.

  • try reading the information befor asking stupid questions

  • Comment removed

  • Who is the guy lip-synchng?

  • .. and michael gambon is the only person to have a corner named after him on the 'top gear' circuit. he almost flipped the reasonably priced suzuki liana..

  • Does anyone know if The Singing Detective (BBC) is available on DVD?

  • @creemcheese yep, I got it for Christmas!

  • Yeah "The Singing Detective" (BBC mini series NOT the movie!) is superb !!!

  • Haha, my mum's in that, she's one of the backround people dancing and singing, the one with the quite big hair, and who is slightly over doing it. She's weearing a skirt. Mhahahaha, she is going to kill me now :D

  • Pandimonum: State of mind for persons without an 'optimistic' outlook coupled without faith in what 'Jesus Christ' is all about..,.. Maybe one won't show/can't tell now, but they will, oh how they will!!! Smile

  • I dont understand what you are trying to say here.

  • OMG @_@ is that Geoffrey Rush?! (The patient bobbing his head to the music). Actually, Al Jarreau (who is African American) also sang this song.

  • no - it's Michael Gambon, but the do look a bit similar in this...

  • @ihearttinytim it's Michael Gambon, the same man who plays the singing detective...

  • I did this text for my dissertation. As such, i've watched it at least 20 times and I'm still finding new things in it. Look at what Gambon and Steadman are reduced to now- harry potter and gavin and stacey. For "oringinal" drama we have crappy predictable "plot by numbers" monday night thrillers starring golden handcuffed ex soap and sitcom stars. You're much missed, Dennis.

  • one of many great scenes in the singing detective

  • Best part is when Bing and Maxine(?) of the Andrew Sisters do their "black" voices. Sweet.

  • i have to sing this song in chior..

  • Oh my god! Me too!

  • OMG ME TOO.......ha ha ha

  • u sereal? hahaha! well he doesnt sound as good as us

  • Yep Im sereal Its my fave choir song!!!!!!

  • Who wouldn't want to mess up that particular Mister In-Between?

I also sense a bit of irony in this musical piece.

  • The irony is just why it is so much fun.

This is such a deep film. It goes straight to the heart of the dream world that rules most of wour waking lives.

  • They're saying don't mess *with* Mr. In-between. :)

  • Gambon looks damn snazzy!

  • In the opening I mean haha, he looks pretty rough in the later bits of the scene :P

  • this was just about the best series on television of all time. its so good.

  • Agreed! Genius screenplay by Dennis Potter and genius acting by Michael Gambon, combined with some nostalgic 1930's/1940's music. A winning combination!

  • Like Marlowe's awful skin-disease...how many layers are there here?

  • excellent , man so trippy..

  • One of my favorite moments in this film/TV show...

  • thanks a lot, it brings back good old memories.
