I suspect that main reason that YouTube changed to the like and dislike system, and the reason for the high ratings, was because the majority of rating were either 1 or 5 star, which is basically the same. In effect all the new system has done is allowed people to see the number of likes and dislikes, or 1 and 5 star ratings, and come up with endless awful jokes about them
