Bravo Italia - bellissima! Should have won - far superior to the top 3! They should have had Junior Eurovision back then - for all those stupid 'nursery rhyme' songs that have given Eurovision a bad name and made it such a joke. But amongst all the crap there are some beautiful gems, such as this one.
@Furienna Then your brother is the lucky one. It could have been that your brother in law resembles Franco Battiato. In that case your sister wouldn't have had a good deal. Personally I look more like Franco, though I still have to learn how to have that "certain régard"
LOL the commentator said at the end that it was "Woody Allen and Alice" :D And yes, Battiato does look a a bit like Woody Allen, maybe he should have left those glasses home. I'm sure there were contact lenses at the time. Great song, though. :)
does any one have music sheets of the part where the violins are playing. im searching every where for the music sheets of treni di tozeur for the violin.
Ancora la ricordo. Fantastica I treni di tozeur. Benvenuta l'Italia a Eurovision 2011. Domenico Modugno, Franco Battiato, Umberto Tozzi, Albano e Romina, Toto Cotugno, Jalisse, 12 points!!!... Gli spagnoli siamo inamorati della vostra musica. Ci vediamo a Dusseldorf 2011.
@mncjeff it's in german, taken from the magic flute by mozart. "Doch wir wollen dir ihn zeigen, Und du wirst..." and it means "Still we want to show him to you, And you will...".
@mncjeff that's actually an extract from Mozart's The Magic Flute in German - "Doch wir wollen dir ihn zeigen und du wirst", something like "But we'll want to show it and you will". A great song, quite surely best ever Italian entry at Eurosong festival
According to the Dutch commentator, "Alice is without any doubt the women with the most beautiful eyes of the entire festival", and at the end of the song he calls her "that miracle of creation". With that last one, he may have gone a bit overboard, but basically he's right.
@SeverityOne No overboard at all. The genius of Battiato, the grace of Pio's strings and the grace of Alice are, IMHO, something still unmatched.
I have many a doubt that we (Italy) can deliver something like that anymore...we have some highly-talented artists, but it's some reality-winner dude we'll send to ESC, as usual. Sigh.
trulyloyale, you go to far! not only Italy had good songs and Italy like all countries had some bad songs sometimes; it's just a mater of taste
I'm not sure la rai is that rich and there's been disagreement between ebu and many chanels. the problem for Italy is that Mr B. and his staff think they can rule the Ebu as they rule la rai (to say the least)
nevertheless I'd love Italy to come back to ESC, for their songs, not for la rai!
@MrClaudiojuan yeah that's absolutely right , that's a matter ot taste : the good taste of the country home of music Italy and the bad taste of certain northeuropean or scandinavian countries, better said their love x trash !!
Don't talk of things you clearly have no idea about, no matter you're the same stupid, clueless, ignorant Italian web troll who is using his different accounts on here to post his nonsenses : RAI has infinite money compared to any Eurovision broadcasting company else
talking of money RAI outcomes even BBC by miles and that's due to a very simple reason ......
Even more if you compare the financial situation of Italy with the UK's disastrous one : UK nearly was to bankrupcy and all their banks & insurances cracked and they just don'ìt exist anymore , they're holded by governement's money ( just get informed instead of posting ur silly comments & ur bizarre nonsenses ) .
And RAI wisely helled the whole Eurovision for total disagreement on ESC organization
and for foreseeing what was going to happen with the contest transformed and driven to what it's since 10 years : ugly, awful, bad tasty , crappy, ridiculous, woeful TRASH and npothing else.
Not only Italy will never come back to the ESC rubbish Eurovision & BBC style , but other countries left this senseless and rubbishy event and much more will do in next years and all continue on saying that Italy was 100 right in kicking the Eurovision shit off its TV !!
I'm telling true facts because, unlike you who are totally clueless about them , I know them very well : enjoy the ESC rubbish if youre so good tasty lo love it , but learn not to talk or spell ur ridiculous & bizarre bs over subjects you have no idea about , pathetic & childish stupid Italian web troll !!
Of course Italy can afford to host at least a dozen of Contests per year, so dont trust ( if you need to be told about ) a word of the bizarre , trashy statements and asinine comments posted by a multiaccounts web troll here....!
The decision of italy to get out forever from the ESC ridiculous & patheitc garbage was taken in 1997 and it was due to the almost total disagreements between Italy and EBU of how to paln & reform the Contest.
BBC and other EBU members wanted to be like its nowadays
( overall bad taste , biasing atittude to outer countries ignorance of music, fixed contests and cheated votes from those countries comprehensive ...) .
No need to say who that time was 100% right and who deadly wrong , stubbornly blind and incapable in foreseeing, looking at what kinda trash & awful stuff the Eurovision has being turned itself thanks to BBC , TVE , France TV and
ARD-ZDF ....! ;-)
There's only one winner in sush a disaster : RAI , wisely helling'em all ....!!
Me gusta más cuando la canta él solo, quizá porque es la versión que he escuchado siempre. Bellísima canción.Tratándose de Eurovisión supongo que ni siquiera debió quedar entre las 10 primeras.
Great song, splendido. It is true, Italy is afraid to win, because in Italy there is a song festival, namely sanremo, whic attracts all the national attention..so could not afford to have a second one and believe nearly noone knows ESC in the country..peculiar
sverigech, AFAIK Italy left Eurovision because they are afraid of winning!
The decision was taken after Toto Cutugno won in 1990. The winning country has to organise the contest the following year. When Cutugno won, RAI had to organise the contest in 1991 and, because in Italy the ESC is almost unknown, they lost a lot of money.
@fopneus IS THAT WHAT IT MEANS IN ITALIAN? IF SO THANK YOU SO MUCH THE WORDS BEFIT THE MOOD AND ELEGANCE OF THE SONG. ALICE ABSOLUTELY SMOULDERS IN THE PERFORMANCE. BELLISIMA! PAOLO
@fopneus thanks Fopneus. An absolutely spellbinding song. Lifts me up and out of myself. Almost religious in its effect. Thanks again for the translation.
To me, revisiting this song is a major goosebumpy experience. This is the best song ever to enter ESC.
I was nine years old in 1984 and this song made me realise, in a dreamlike trance, just how wonderful and strange music may be. When Sweden won with a silly song about a wishful dream of walking on the street with golden shoes, I kinda took it personal..:)
And this was supposed to be the decision of a qualified jury of experts... Yeah , righ..
I echo those sentiments totally. This song absolutely captured my imagination as a 16 year old watching the ESC from South London. I thought it to be stylish and intelligent, sung with such elegance. And the songstress absolutely smouldered in her performance in such a classy fashion. such a far cry from chavy Lewisham!
My favourite this year; a beautiful and atmospheric piece that reels you in and doesn't let go until the last note. Great lyrics, too, open to a lot of interpretation. Franco and Alice's voices contrast in a very interesting way, and those operatic singers clinched the deal. Very special. And what's more, it never seems to lose its charm no matter how often I listen to it. This is fast becoming one of my very fondest favourites.

In the border villages see the trains pass through the deserted streets of Tozeur
In a home far away your mother sees me, she remembers me of my habits.
And for a moment the desire to live at another speed returns, still the slow trains continue to pass to Tozeur.
In abandoned churches they are preparinging shelters and new spacecraft for interstellar travel
Lying in an old salt mine and it reminds me off a spell
And for a moment etc......
In the border villages watch the trains pass Tozeur.
