Being that it's a trombone, I always thought you used a trombone mouthpiece to play it. my embouchure is for the regular trombone mouthpiece and not a trumpet... bummer:(
Nice!!! i like it very much! are you a trumpet player?? 'cuz i 've got my soprano trombone and i'm starting making sound o it! but i don't know how to study. should i sthink it like trumpet or trombone??
@AMMstudios Yes and... kind of. You'd have to pick one up to really understand what I mean by this, but some of the notes are a little off. So, certain notes need to be played with the slide either slightly out or slightly in depending on the note.
One thing I'd add to soulfire's comment: there are some odd instruments out there. I remember my cousin's slide trumpet as being quite like this soprano trombone except with a much shorter slide, but in videos on YouTube I'm seeing backward-facing slides (like, pointing the same direction as the tuning slide on first valve of a regular trumpet). The ones on YT match soulfire's description better, so they're probably the conventional type - no idea where my cousin got his, but it sounded good
for those out there asking, the same thing seems to be popping up, so...
-Soprano trombone = Slide trumpet. it is the same key and octave as a standard Bb trumpet, the only difference is that you have to learn the slide positions to play it effectively.
If you were this good then, I wonder what you are now. Probably about a hundred times better than I can do :D I need to see if my band director has ever heard of a soprano trombone. He's a 'bone fanatic and he'd get a kick out of it.
actually i thought it was quite good, i always have wanted to try soprano trombone my short ass arms were neer able to reach 6 and 7 slide position on a regulat trombone, so for my brass playing i settled and enjoy very much the trumpet, btu this wouuld be a cool thing so i could finally play trmobone, keep having fun ;-)
you can read it any way it if you read c trombone then when you play it play in the key of Bb as if it was in base cleft folow all the accedentals as writen and use c trombone positions and it will sond right with all the other instruments
nice job. I've tried valve trombone which is fun. I really want to try slide trumpet. I don't want one of those cheap 200.00 brand new Chinese jobs. Do you know a site or a place I may be able to find a used one.
im a tenor trombone player, im realy interested in these soprano trombones and really want to try one but i wouldnt be able to play useing a ergular sized trumpet mouthpiece can you get a sop trombone that uses a tenor trombone mouth piece..
(btw i just noticed the song is the chicken haha i didnt recognise it) :D great video
not if you want it to sound remotely well at all. It would sound like a trumpet with a trombone mouthpiece, because that's what it would be, go try that and see if you like the sound. But I highly doubt you will, just learn on a trumpet mouthpiece. Something with a wide round rim would be best so you don't kill yourself.
cheers ill try that, but is it not really bad for your oumbichere (sorry for the crappy spelling) to do that? i mean play on a trombone mouthpiece and then on a trumpet one?
You just really have to separate the two playing techniques. I play trombone, tuba, trumpet, clarinet. and a couple of other instruments (badly though). But you just have to know that you're playing different instruments. Trombone range won't carry over, you have to build those muscles from scratch. It shouldn't wreck your chops as long as you don't use pressure, it's the biggest mistake by people switching into high brass. By the way, it emboucher/embouchre, depending on where you're from.
hello, Ive been playing trumpet for four years now, and I'm using a 7c mouthpiece (yamaha trumpet). does anyone know when I should move to a different mouthpiece? thank you
@EpicF4ilure yes, its time to move up to either a 5 c or 1 and a half c. you definatly need to change if you are in your 4th year, i been playing trumpet among other instrumetns for over 12 years, now, and i think by the time i was in high school freshman i did go to other mouth peices, hope this helps have fun and good luck ;-)
@EpicF4ilure most likely.. i mooved to a 3c after one year.. usually your supposed to wait 2.. but.. the lower the number the bigger the mouthpice (not dramatically bigger but it makes a huge difference in tone quality)... and I would stick with a #then a c... get a 5c or a 3c... there like 30-60 bucks at your music store.. i would play before you buy.
I wish I had a soprano bone... probably an alto bone too so I could learn an Eb pitched instrument without going to alto sax... But altohorn is another choice.
I play trombone in jazz band, I have a great tone and sound but I overpower the one trumpet that is the only trumpet player in jazz band so my teacher recommended learning soprano trombone. Is the berkely a good starting soprano?
I have a Berkeley cornet what won't play in tune if your life depended on it and a piccolo trumpet that has a very thin sound and slow valves and slides.
The Jupiter is not too much more expensive and is likely loads better than the Berkley version.
Note: Look for serial number starting with E or higher if you get a used Jupiter. Those are the newer ones with the improved design over the older ones.
also, If you haven't played trumpet before, toss the stock mouth piece and find a Bach 1C or a Schilke 24 (the Schilke is bigger) or something . You don't want to complicate the transition any more than it will be by using the excruciatingly small 7c that comes with the instrument .
Instruments aren't pitched in a clef, but are pitched to a harmonic. For example, a tenor trombone might be tuned in the Bb harmonic (You set your embouchure for a Bb, you get a Bb), but on an alto trombone, you might try to play a Bb, but you get an Eb instead, as it is tuned in the Eb harmonic. The pitch of the instrument does not change regardless of the clef. It's the player that learns to read a different clef.
Thanks 'ti84731' but I knew that already, it was my silly cousin who asked the question even though I explained to him that it wasn't but thanks anyway.
would you say its easier for a trumpet player or a trombone player to pick this up? i play trombone and i desperately wanna try one but i suck at trumpet
I'd like to add that the schilke 24 is one of, if not the largest, trumpet mouthpieces out there, 18.3mm compared to the 17 mm of the 1C. But it's still far from the 25.4 mm of the trombone 6 1/2AL. If you're serious about learning it, take lessons from a trumpeter.
2hmessiah if matters if your a trombone player or a trumpet because if ur a tromboen u can buy a trombone shank so it fits in the soprano but the mouth piece is a trombone mouth peice jus the pipe is smaller so it fits
I was taking trombone lessons from a trumpet player at the time. I was able to ask him for some advice regarding trumpet chops, but I really taught myself. It's relatively simple really. Same positions just on a smaller scale. As for the trumpet embouchure, just go with what feels good to you. If you put the mouthpiece to your lips and it feels comfortable and you get a decent sound and range, then that is the right embouchure. If you have specific questions feel free to message me.
Hey Chris, I am a trombone player in the 8th grade and i was wondering if you could recomend a brand of trombone and saprano trombone for me because i will be getting both of those soon. Also what size mouthpiece did you you for your regular trombone?
well not with the slide positions. You just have to remember that everything is alot smaller than you think. As far as the mouthpiece and embouchure, yes it's very different. It's a trumpet mouthpiece.
i have one and i have noticed its a bit different sound its about octave higher i would suggest seeing if u can play a 7c trumpet mouth peice first (normal sized) cause for me i can switch between just about any mouth peice....besides a clarinet reed -.- so just check out what u can do first
No offense, but it would make more sense for a trombone player to try using a 1C/1B (schilke 20, or something similar) trumpet mouthpiece first. It's a far larger rim and would feel much more comfortable for someone who is used to large mouthpieces.
well whatever works for you. If you've found something you like, then I say go for it. I always hated when teachers forced people (me included) to play on certain mouthpieces. It may have certain benefits in the beginning but around high school a serious player should be able to use what they want.

heyaa! what's the difference between soprano trombone and a slide trumpet?
doubleredsx3 1 year ago
@doubleredsx3: I actually didn't know the exact way to answer this, so I posted this question in a trumpet forum and this is the best response I got:
The true slide trumpet is nothing like a soprano trombone, but many people will refer to soprano trombones as slide trumpets.
Almost nobody now plays the slide trumpet. It is a variation on the baroque trumpet with a small slide enabling chromatic notes to be produced.
soulfire2588 1 year ago
One thing I'd add to soulfire's comment: there are some odd instruments out there.

Sounds and looks like a trumpet, but just with a slide. Is really that fun to play?

Slide trumpet? They were common in the 12th-18th centuries. Then they were discontinued

Which mutes do you use in/on your instrument? Normal trumpet?
Ruigekerel 3 years ago
Normal trumpet mutes work fine as the bell is the same size. I typically use harmon and straight mutes.

Thanks for the compliment, I'd like to but I don't have a camera that can do it. When I get one I'll be more than happy to.

i never even knew that there was a such thing as a soprano trombone!! this is my 5th year of regular bass trombone, and i knew there was a valve trombone, but i didnt know about the soprano. how do you play the soprano?? it sounds soo trumpety! do u read in bass or treble clef??
iluvkaren123 3 years ago
treble on soprano. Same key as trumpet.
soulfire2588 3 years ago
What brand is your soprano?
I have a Jupiter, but it doesn't sound so trumpety.
Maybe it's because I am an amateur..
