@MlKEPORNTOY No, it was formed with John Pertrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy and grew to include Jordan Rudess and James LaBrie. They simply lost a member and replaced him. Portnoy was not irreplacable.
It will never beat Octavarium, as far as albums, and songs, that was the pinnacle of it all, but its still better than a lot of stuff, shame Portnoys gone though :( :( :(
Do you know how many albums I have bought as a result of hearing them on Youtube first? Hundreds of them which I wouldn't have bought if I hadn't heard them on here first. Listen on Youtube first and if I like I go to Amazon or Play and purchase.
@extrememind100 After listening to the songs a few times, ive come to realise that that lack of something is probably Portnoy, man, I started imagining what the songs would sound like if Portnoy was playing (although the writing process would have gone a different way had he been there) and, in my opinion, its definately the lack of the more varied fills and especially the beats that makes the songs feel like they need something added to them. Not bashing the album or mangini though, its still
"I started imagining what the songs would sound like if Portnoy was playing (although the writing process would have gone a different way had he been there)"
Chug-a-lug goth death shred, perhaps? Face it, that stuff was getting old. They should have let it be with ToT and SC. BC&SL was old before it even came out. Portnoy's fetish with blast beats was tearing the band away from the essence of what DT actually is (i.e., I&W, SFAM and Octavarium).

I'm not buying this, Dream Theater doesn't deserve my money for shamelessly depicting such obscene imagery on their album cover!
(this album was released two days prior to 9/11/2011; the rope the unicyclist [possibly Phillipe Petit] is on has to be tethered to something and what other buildings have ever had aircraft fly so close to them? Coincidence? I don't think so! Look, they even had the nerve to put their logo on the tail!)
@EvilCommunistMuslim5 by me... they would do this because of Mike Portnoy when he left, they were so much surprised ''its a dramatic turn of events'' everything stands on a small rope
You're a dumbass. . . You said the album was released two days prior to 9/11. . . Obviously you don't know what prior means, it mean "before." @EvilCommunistMuslim5 your name says it all i dont think they honestly spent the time offend ppl. conspiracy theories? Not sure if they intended to insult anyone never have in the past
@EvilCommunistMuslim5 your an idiot. your not buying the album because you think that they intentionally related the album art to 9/11? just because it was released 2 days before 9/11 and the damn unicyclist? I can honestly tell you thats not at all what the art is about.
@EvilCommunistMuslim5 what a moronic head you've got there fucktard!!!! slimeball maggot!!! you think you are smart because of your conspiracy theories, DT HAS GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11 YOU NINCOMPOOP!!! YOU ARE A VERY ANNOYING BREED OF STUPID GENIOUS!!!
@Fideous Nope. Downloading something off the internet is just as bad as stealing. Not only are you robbing the band members themselves. You're also cheating the unsung heros like the audio engineers, the instrument technicians, the stage production staff, and countless others. Dream Theater didn't sell 10 million albums worldwide by giving their shit away for free.
@killerofwall yeah, like less than a dollar per album sold. And fyi, the band gets the money from the record label, who gets the money from the music stores that already bought the CDs for stock. The customer for the music store has barely anything to do with it.
Exactly. At one point in time, when I was a college kid and couldn't afford to buy new ones, I used to buy used and worn out audio cassettes of my favorite bands like Van Halen, Zepp, even DT etc. Then I grew net savvy, and started downloading stuff. Now I earn, and I buy stuff. That didn't make any difference in my love for these bands, did it?
@Fideous I guess that by 15€ you wont be starving. If you have internet you have financial means for sure. I already bought the album but ive downloaded it first so i could eargasm before the purchase
@Fideous Bro, stealing music is killing the music industry (the real music anyway) If you like a band (and you're a fan of their music) buy it, don't steal it. Give them the financial means to continue making good music.
@Fideous I disagree. I'll listen to this album all day on youtube, but I won't download it. This band deserves the money, even if it's from poor and broke little ol me ;)
@Fideous Yeah, I'd have to disagree with that. Buying the album means your supporting the band by giving them the money for the content they put out. Downloading it means nothing to them, their not getting anything out of it.
@Fideous A real fan would easily see the reasons to buy the album. There's obviously something wrong with your morality. That's why I have nothing but contempt for you
@Fideous A real fan would easily see the reasons to buy the album. There's obviously something wrong with your morality. That's why I have nothing but contempt for you
Actually it does. Stealing the album (illegally downloading it) means you lack respect for the fact that the band put their blood, sweat, and tears into the album.
Let me make it easier to understand. Bands have a rough time as it is having to allow the label they're on be entitled to a huge portion of profits made from album sales. If everyone downloaded albums from all artists on an individual label without paying, that label would go bankrupt and every artist from them would have to search for another label. Think of how much money a band has to pay just for studio time. Don't you think they deserve a financial break from the fans because of it?
As far as buying merchandise, if you don't have the money to buy a band's CD, then how can you afford to buy t-shirts or posters from them? Using the "I'm broke" excuse is just a cop out to justify why you refuse to buy the album.
@Rawk4Life or it means you are smart enough not to pay $25 for a damn CD that cost them 5 cents to make. you are respecting them by listening to their music and telling everyone you know how they are the #1 prog band to ever have had existence on this planet.
@Rawk4Life 500 dollars for a only medocre quality studio. A real studio like the type Dream Theater would use would most likely be a lot more expensive.
@APJleader I was giving a bare minimum estimate on what it would cost any band to use a professional studio. But I do know that no studio allows a band to record an album for cheap, like what G35saregod was saying.
@Rawk4Life Yes, and I agree with you. I'm sorry if I came off as condicending or trying to sound like some know it all...I don't have any time durring the day to look up stuff on youtube so I'm only on at like midnight after I get home from work...and I don't always thing my posts through lol.
@APJleader It's all good. I was just giving G35 a reality check because he thought DT recorded their album for cheap and therefore thinks it's excusable for him to steal the album off the internet.
@G35saregod The countless of hours they put into this, the cost of all of their instruments, live setup, transportation, production, studio costs, is worth five cents to you?
@Rawk4Life Yes that is true, and iam not gonna lie, i download this album (steal) but i dont have 10000 dls to listen all the music i have, even listening in youtube is stealing, but the only thing i fell good about it, is that i go to the performances of the bands i like, in this case im going to go the next concert here in monterrey, so this my way to pay this guys something.
@memingas18 Listening to music on Youtube is not stealing. If you don't download the link, then technically it is not wrong to stream it online unless it gets removed due to copyright.
@chromakey84 Again, that isn't always the case. I used to have a couple of friends who specifically told me that they had little or no money at all, and that is why they download albums without paying for them. In other words, they also DON'T have money to buy any of their t-shirts, posters, or even see them in concert unless they coax "someone else" into paying their way. That is not supporting them, it's called pawning your support of the band on to another person, which is ridiculous.
@Rawk4Life well at the same time he is filling another seat in the venue, him paying for it or not at that point is irrelevant because the money gets paid regardless and DT, The venue and everyone else doesnt care who pays, as long as someone does.. So there are many ways to see this.
@chromakey84 You're still not getting it. The fact is that ever since the incarnation of Napster in 1999, more and more music fans are searching for ways to download music WITHOUT paying for it, even if they can save up a dozen dollars or so to buy a physical copy. The old way of doing it would be to burn a copy off your hard drive, and then give it to your friend so that he doesn't have to buy it himself. Either way, there is no justification for ripping off a band by stealing their music.
@chromakey84 My point is that new music should only be allowed to be "streamed" online, but with a blocker to keep the listener from downloading it without at least agreeing to pay a minimal fee.
@Rawk4Life wait wait allowed? Like, maybe humans should stop paying musicians, actors an sports players so much god damned money and pay the teachers ( jobs of importance)ect.. everyone has there fucking heads far up their asses, music is just entertainment, get over it, you are brain washed by marketing, and I have been studying music for 10 years now so its not like i dont understand how diffucult or time consuming this is, just grow the fuck up thats all, shit like this should simply be free
@chromakey84 Grow up? You know how idiotic you sound by claiming to have studied music for 10 years, yet are still hard headed enough to believe that bands should just release their albums free of charge? For the record, I haven't paid athletes a dime in the last 4 or 5 years since I hardly attend any sporting events. In regards to actors, they get paid for a movie they appear in BEFORE it releases to theaters. The money generated from ticket sales go directly to the company that made it.
@chromakey84 The reason teachers don't get paid more is because the government is spending unnecessary millions of dollars on programs that don't even benefit U.S. citizens nationally (does Harry Reid's rant about the Cowboy Poetry Festival in Las Vegas ring a bell?).
@lolwut31 Pirating - a person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea; a person who USES or reproduces the work or invention of another WITHOUT authorization. Are you that stupid to think pirating has nothing to do with stealing?
maybe you should watch the south park episode (9, season 7) "Christian Rock Hard" if you haven't already. Not everything which is legal is necessarily ethical.
@Fideous In some way it does, because youre not "stealing" their work. I dont have the financial means but i will do whatever its necessary to buy this album.

@EvilCommunistMuslim5 your an idiot. your not buying the album because you think that they intentionally related the album art to 9/11? just because it was released 2 days before 9/11 and the damn unicyclist? I can honestly tell you thats not at all what the art is about.

Buying an album doesn't maker you more of a fan. It just means you have the financial means (;
Fideous 5 months ago 37
@Fideous It doesn't make you more of a fan, but it shows you support what they are doing.
lovescarguitar 5 months ago
@Fideous Nope. Downloading something off the internet is just as bad as stealing. Not only are you robbing the band members themselves. You're also cheating the unsung heros like the audio engineers, the instrument technicians, the stage production staff, and countless others. Dream Theater didn't sell 10 million albums worldwide by giving their shit away for free.
BrianSou69 5 months ago 2
@Fideous
no way! stealing doesn't make u a fan, i'm sorry. You can get this for 10 bucks if you even look for it. money is just an excuse.

@Fideous ridiculous the a part of money are sent to the band -.-
killerofwall 5 months ago

@Fideous Bro, stealing music is killing the music industry (the real music anyway) If you like a band (and you're a fan of their music) buy it, don't steal it. Give them the financial means to continue making good music.
dtjesus101 5 months ago
@Fideous Exactly. I emptied out the rest of my Itunes funds (about four songs worth) then downloaded the rest for free. From you actually lol.
They got my money this year when I bought two tickets to their Chicago show next month. They can spot my 7 bucks.

@Fideous I disagree. I'll listen to this album all day on youtube, but I won't download it. This band deserves the money, even if it's from poor and broke little ol me ;)
Axemaster5 5 months ago in playlist A Dramatic Turn of Events
@Fideous Yeah, I'd have to disagree with that. Buying the album means your supporting the band by giving them the money for the content they put out. Downloading it means nothing to them, their not getting anything out of it.

Actually it does. Stealing the album (illegally downloading it) means you lack respect for the fact that the band put their blood, sweat, and tears into the album.
Rawk4Life 5 months ago 7
@Rawk4Life if i want to support the band i buy merchandize, that´s the easiest way, downloading you´re stealing from the record companies, fuck them
dias17se 5 months ago
Let me make it easier to understand. Bands have a rough time as it is having to allow the label they're on be entitled to a huge portion of profits made from album sales. If everyone downloaded albums from all artists on an individual label without paying, that label would go bankrupt and every artist from them would have to search for another label. Think of how much money a band has to pay just for studio time. Don't you think they deserve a financial break from the fans because of it?
Rawk4Life 5 months ago
As far as buying merchandise, if you don't have the money to buy a band's CD, then how can you afford to buy t-shirts or posters from them? Using the "I'm broke" excuse is just a cop out to justify why you refuse to buy the album.
Rawk4Life 5 months ago
@Rawk4Life or it means you are smart enough not to pay $25 for a damn CD that cost them 5 cents to make. you are respecting them by listening to their music and telling everyone you know how they are the #1 prog band to ever have had existence on this planet.
G35saregod 3 months ago
@G35saregod You honestly believe it only cost Dream Theater 5 cents to make? Try 500 dollars at least because renting a studio is NOT CHEAP.
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@Rawk4Life 500 dollars for a only medocre quality studio. A real studio like the type Dream Theater would use would most likely be a lot more expensive.
APJleader 3 months ago in playlist Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events
@APJleader I was giving a bare minimum estimate on what it would cost any band to use a professional studio. But I do know that no studio allows a band to record an album for cheap, like what G35saregod was saying.
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@Rawk4Life Yes, and I agree with you. I'm sorry if I came off as condicending or trying to sound like some know it all...I don't have any time durring the day to look up stuff on youtube so I'm only on at like midnight after I get home from work...and I don't always thing my posts through lol.
APJleader 3 months ago
@APJleader It's all good. I was just giving G35 a reality check because he thought DT recorded their album for cheap and therefore thinks it's excusable for him to steal the album off the internet.
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@G35saregod The countless of hours they put into this, the cost of all of their instruments, live setup, transportation, production, studio costs, is worth five cents to you?
Joshlapl2112 3 months ago
@Rawk4Life Yes that is true, and iam not gonna lie, i download this album (steal) but i dont have 10000 dls to listen all the music i have, even listening in youtube is stealing, but the only thing i fell good about it, is that i go to the performances of the bands i like, in this case im going to go the next concert here in monterrey, so this my way to pay this guys something.
memingas18 3 months ago
@memingas18 Listening to music on Youtube is not stealing. If you don't download the link, then technically it is not wrong to stream it online unless it gets removed due to copyright.
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@Rawk4Life so buy a t shirt and go see them live or something, there are many ways to donate to a band DT fan 15 years
chromakey84 3 months ago
@chromakey84 Again, that isn't always the case. I used to have a couple of friends who specifically told me that they had little or no money at all, and that is why they download albums without paying for them. In other words, they also DON'T have money to buy any of their t-shirts, posters, or even see them in concert unless they coax "someone else" into paying their way. That is not supporting them, it's called pawning your support of the band on to another person, which is ridiculous.
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@Rawk4Life well at the same time he is filling another seat in the venue, him paying for it or not at that point is irrelevant because the money gets paid regardless and DT, The venue and everyone else doesnt care who pays, as long as someone does.. So there are many ways to see this.
chromakey84 3 months ago
@chromakey84 You're still not getting it. The fact is that ever since the incarnation of Napster in 1999, more and more music fans are searching for ways to download music WITHOUT paying for it, even if they can save up a dozen dollars or so to buy a physical copy. The old way of doing it would be to burn a copy off your hard drive, and then give it to your friend so that he doesn't have to buy it himself. Either way, there is no justification for ripping off a band by stealing their music.
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@chromakey84 My point is that new music should only be allowed to be "streamed" online, but with a blocker to keep the listener from downloading it without at least agreeing to pay a minimal fee.
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@Rawk4Life wait wait allowed? Like, maybe humans should stop paying musicians, actors an sports players so much god damned money and pay the teachers ( jobs of importance)ect.. everyone has there fucking heads far up their asses, music is just entertainment, get over it, you are brain washed by marketing, and I have been studying music for 10 years now so its not like i dont understand how diffucult or time consuming this is, just grow the fuck up thats all, shit like this should simply be free
chromakey84 3 months ago
@chromakey84 Grow up? You know how idiotic you sound by claiming to have studied music for 10 years, yet are still hard headed enough to believe that bands should just release their albums free of charge? For the record, I haven't paid athletes a dime in the last 4 or 5 years since I hardly attend any sporting events. In regards to actors, they get paid for a movie they appear in BEFORE it releases to theaters. The money generated from ticket sales go directly to the company that made it.
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@chromakey84 The reason teachers don't get paid more is because the government is spending unnecessary millions of dollars on programs that don't even benefit U.S. citizens nationally (does Harry Reid's rant about the Cowboy Poetry Festival in Las Vegas ring a bell?).
Rawk4Life 3 months ago
@chromakey84 you study music my ass dude musicians should be paid for their job.

@lolwut31 Pirating - a person who robs or commits illegal violence at sea or on the shores of the sea; a person who USES or reproduces the work or invention of another WITHOUT authorization. Are you that stupid to think pirating has nothing to do with stealing?
