  • Sorry to hijack, but given the relevant discussion regarding akai s1100 floppy's, I have now bought 2 of these samplers and they are both sitting here unable to read floppy disks. I ahve bought a replacement floppy off ebay that came from a s3000 that does not work! Am i that unluck that all these don't work or am i missing something obvious maybe? Would really appreciate any input from anybody. @electronic exposure, did you ever fix? Thanks all

  • @fullyprogrammable

S3000 disk drives do not work.

You'll have to get hold of a diskdrive that has jumpers where you can set it to read D0 instead of PC's D1 and some more settings need to be correct.

I buy used PC drives everywhere and simply TRY to get them working.

Most of the times they won't work, sometimes they work but only on low density DD Disks.

    Good luck there!

  • @karelpostthuis Thanks for all the info, much appreciated. I have bought a cleaning kit and some lowDD disks, they are able to and save now, but i get an error bad floppy disk data on loading!! Think i better try replacing the drive again! Thanks again.

  • too bad they dont ship to canada

  • This is not the correct size for the esi-32. I have the Emu esi-32 model at backlightsonline com

  • @vannin666 Is your display contrast setting ok?

    Check that first.

  • Hi,

You can get these s1000 backlights at backlightsonline for $29

  • Hi,

You can get these s1000 backlights at backlightsonline(dot)com for $29

  • I just picked up an s 1100, the backlight is dead and I can't get any discs to work, not to mention I do not have the manual. Can anyone help me? I need the manual for this.

  • @electronicexposure If your discdrive has a YELLOW LED in it's frontpanel the drive is most likely broken.

    Backlights can easily be fitted.

Diskettes should be formatted on the S1100 to be used.

SCSI disks should be OLD SCSI 1 or SCSI 2 drives like Quantum prodrives or units like that with max 500 MB.

You will have to partition and format first with maximum partition size 60 Megabytes.

S1100 is a great sounding sampler with sonic qualities in the highest league..

  • @karelpostthuis The yellow light only goes on for a second, it looks like its acting normally, because it only turns on when I try to format a disc. The formatting always fails tough, perhaps I have the wrong type of floppy disc.

    Thanks for your help.

  • @electronicexposure Believe me, your drive is gone.

I'm a specialist in S-series samplers and the symprom you discribe is correct for a bad drive.

Try to get hold of a S1000 -ALPS- manufactured drive and your unit will work fine.

  • @karelpostthuis I got an external SCSI driver with a zip disc, it works fine now, thanks.

  • Also on backlight4you you can find for all synths Roland D-50, D-550, D-70, W-30, Korg Wavestation EX, Wavestation A/D, O1W(FD), O1R/W, Yamaha TG77, SY-77, SY-99 and DC to AC inverters too (Classic and Electronic inverters).

  • where can I get those backlight strips online?

  • Hi Karel, Is it a white EL foil that I should order for the AKAI S3000? Thanks for sharing

    your expert knowledge.

  • hi great video. you can get perfect fitting backlights at a website called midirakete. they have backlights for nearly every sampler display. they ship worldwide.

i replaced backlights for mpc 3000/60 s950 and it looks like new after installing.prices are really ok. about 20 euro depending on model.

  • @glammer58 Correct, a good alternative, but it is a bit more expensive than this one.. Reccommendable for other devices than a Akai S1000 /1100 /3000 etc..

  • Hi,

great video - can I ask a stupid question?

I found the foil on the Conrad website - but are you using the:

    138 mm x 34 mm

    or the

    112 mm x 87 mm

    Thanks in advance

  • @stumpinmyroom 138 mm x 34 mm

    You need the length.

34 millimeters hight is just enough to light the vertical pixels and 138 is more than enough to light the horizontal ones.

    Good luck!.

  • @karelpostthuis thank you for the reply - much appreciated !

  • Thanks for reply Karel, what powersupply to check... the main or some different powersuply...?

also how to check the inverter if it's functioning and how to locate the inverter inside the mashine? .... u see I got no service manual for S950

couldn't find it anywhere on the web yet....

    any idea?

    jazz

  • Hi Karel- great job, nice video!

I've got AKAI S950 with no backlight working--- but it would sometimes randomly comes on after some hour of being warmed up... than flicker. I got this sampler of eBay two weeks ago.... now backlight stopped appearing completely...

    I bought EL- Foil from Midi-Raket.de ....

installed , but it didn't work at all :(

someone suggested it might be the backlight

    "inverter"

how do I test that and where to find a replacement?

thanks in advance for any ideas

    jazz

  • @jazzroom Check the soldering of the powersupply and the EL inverter.

These get bad, when you fix that it will probably work fine again.

    Good luck!

  • Cheers for the hint!

Is there a detailed step by step tutorial somewhere how to actually change the part? Precisely which parts to unscrew, what tools to use, risks of damaging things etc. I've heard a few horror stories where people tried it without any guidance or prior experience and bricked the LCD itself.

  • Hello,

s1000/s1100 backlight replacements are available at synthlights

  • Indeed, that's right!

I bought 5 EL's from you 2 weeks ago for my 2 Wavestations, ESI32 and Emulator 2. Your EL's are of very, very good quality!

This CONRAD solution is only cheaper however, the foil is just 8 Euro's where yours is 30.

I support your stuff, because your build quality is way BETTER then CONRAD's.

I think your products should be the leading source for ayone that needs them.

As long as the price is right.

    SYNTHLIGHTS is GOOD STUFF!

  • Check Conrad electronics and look for "frontram" or "EL foil". If you are in the Netherlands i can deliver these things from my personal stock, i've got a lot here!.

  • Very interesting - but I can only repeat what alanpitfall asked, how to obtain this backlight? Thanks! /P

  • Thank you for for the video Karel. Do you have a part number for the backlight - I couldn't find it on the Conrad electronics Website.

  • Nice to see others doing a good job of enjoying repairing synths!

  • hi

interested in your services please get in touch

    thanks

  • Thanks for sharing. I live in the USA. Where can I purchase the backlight used to replace the original?

  • thanks for that .. stroke of genius...
