Ah! It's all so clear now. Nat said recently that they broke up early last year, which means it can't have been too long after this. Obviously mitch was surprised when he found a shoeless jake gyllenhaal sitting in nat's living room drinking water on the rocks when they returned home. In order to pay the million dollars he's had to go overseas to america to work in all sorts of menial jobs, and they decided they couldn't have a long distance relationship. It's clear as day now.
