Apart from the one missed chord @ 5:25, astonishing. With so many masters of the instrument, it can be difficult to pick out the most impressive one(s). However; Hamelin is most certainly a performer who is a notch above, along with Cziffra and Berezovsky. I would mention others, but I'm pretty sure everyone can agree on the two I mentioned. =D

Hamelin is a technically perfect pianist. I just wish that he would lighten up interpretation-wise. He plays as if he's afraid to let emotions get the best of him, causing him to play these seemingly impossible pieces too fast!
I was lucky enough to see him in concert a year ago, when he closed with a few of the Godowsky variations, including this one. I had a good seat for seeing his hands, and you literally cannot see his fingers at all when he flies through that ending. The man is a god on this instrument. He opened the set with Rach 3, but it wasn't as impressive as the Godowsky
No, he's really not. He is bashing what he feels Godowsky did to Chopin. I think some of the Godowsky studies are just bad, but the Chopin they come from is not.
Personally, I think he and Berezovsky are the 2 most "natural" talents. They learn, digest and perform some of the most difficult music and make it look easy. Other very fine pianists can't really do that. Just my opinion/observation

Volodos is the most natural talent active today as far as I know. He practised 3 days to learn Rach 3. Usually he only have to listen to a piece ones then he can play it as perfect as most people can dream of after spending 3 months learning it from the score.
Hamelin is almost as great when it comes to quicklearning but Berezowsky have to work more in general
Even though it was much more technically demanding then Chopin's Winter Wind, I like the Chopin version better. Idk. Just sound wise it's better for me.
SOMEONE CAN POST THIS IN HIGHER QUALITY PLEASE!!!!!

Agreed. Berezovsky and Hamelin are for pianism today what Rachmaninov and Hofmann were at the turn of the century.
When asked who the greatest pianist(s) was (were) Rachmaninov replied "There's Hofmann, then there's me".
Who are the greatest pianist today?
There's Hamelin, then there is Berezovsky. Everyone else simply fills the gap when any of the two aforementioned are not performing.

Hamelin is an extra-virtuoso, but Godowsky's transcriptions don't have any musical value at all!!

Wow, incroyable !!
Il est vraiment bon, j'aime particulièrement cette version de l'étude en A mineur de Chopin, elle est vraiment plus cool.
