To defend him, he is correct in the leg switching, which is the standard guard pass that we teach, and what I learned training in Brazil. He is only showing the set-up after breaking the guard - more advanced jiu-jitsu would use the other leg to pass over the head and take the side, but this is basic set-up, for white belts... my thoughts
this is rook. #1 no one's guard would just fall if you pushed on their thigh with your palm. you could get some space but #2 they grab either leg and your in full mount. rook!
True. A wriggly opponent (or a strong one) could reverse you at the point that you've pulled your legs through but you are not yet balanced. Then again, all guard passes have pitfalls. I haven't seen one yet that didn't - this is just a basic technique that could be used with good timing (and preferably some punches to the other guy's face).

why fling your leg over to pass like that on the second way he shows..an expirenced guy would use that motion to put you right on your back.

If you already have the leg pinned and the other leg in that upper position why not just pass under the leg?
