The Titanic was the 1900's equivalent of 9/11 today, the reason why it is so remembered is because it shocked the world, and the symbol it became. It's not just a "ship sinking" it was the largest ship of its time, and the amount of people that suffered. Just like how 9/11 is a symbol because of the people who suffered so much. Disasters should never be forgotten, no one here is angry because you don't care about them, but because you disrespected them in a such a rude way.

17 years ago or so a ship sunk between Sweden and Estland, almost 900 persons died but I don't think many americans know about it.

Titanic and 9/11 are two different things. 9/11 is much more chocking because it was the first time america was attacked on their own soil. The ones who did it were terrorists intending to kill. Catastrophes and intentional murder are two different things. Titanic is very well known because of the movie. There's been lots of other terrible accidents.
