I was lucky enough to see this amazing partnership perform this live when the Bolshoi were in London in the early eighties and was completely blown away by it. As a young ballet student the hairs on the back of my neck were standing on end. Electric. The shear joy, energy and exuberance they both displayed was humbling to watch. if I hadn't already been in love with ballet this would convince me (plus the wonderful Spartacus from Mukhamedov).
And I, my dears, started the applause in The Tent that night when Bylova hurled herself into Nikonov's arms. Members of the Royal Ballet were in the audience that night too, they thought it vulgar and unmusical, but I think it's just wonderful. So uplifting and inspiring.

A PERFECT example of why the Bolshoi is so great. Great dancers - beautifully trained - but ALLOWED (and probably encouraged) to "hurl" themselves into the dance. What you are seeing is a staggering amount of rehearsal time combined with great partnering and the ability to give up their souls (technically and creatively) to the music and performance. It's my favorite piece ever and if I ever have the privilage to live another life then I want to be them!!!!
@slobbergob Amen! I've seen more videos of this ballet than is good for my mental health. But this performance always comes out on top, and always breaks me up besides. It is my favorite ballet as well. But to be them? No, I'd rather watch. A lot.

Leonid Nikonov was my pas de deux teacher at the La Scala school of Ballet in Milan a couple of years ago. He is great, a good teacher and a really funny guy- always laughing wildly when we stuff up lifts that he thinks are easy.
His is definately an era gone by, they do everything with such ease.
We watched Spring Waters every nite for a week in London at Festival Hall even an encore sometimes the audience stood with excitement
as Mr & Mrs Vlasov performed ~ The next item always started with a buzzzz We also visited the Hollywood Bowl California to see them again with aircraft flying overhead every few minutes ..! Next day we all visited Disney World ~~ Dozens of fotos souvenirs
This is a perfect exemple of what the Bolshoi was all about years ago, different aproach from the Kirov, they were very showy, these two are awsome! Thanks for this post, most enjoyable,
