Hi, we have a rocket with 191bhp, and on a twisty road, (or track) nothing supercarlike can touch it. Only things that can keep up are well driven caterhams.
If I was going to build one similar I would start with the engine and drive train I prefer then build the rest of the car around it. My two preferred ways would be hayabusa engine maxed out with all the good stuff or Electric w/ a 5 speed trans and independent rear axle. Only thing stopping me is $
@wantblackwolf Some builders are already fitting bike engines, fireblades, R1's and soon hayabusa's so if you want to know more google the 'MEV Owners' website and take a look at the Owners Forum.
I dont normally bother wasting my time explaining this, but Ill try just one more time.
First and before I explain why it is you dont understand, I would advise that I am a great supporter of the Atom and would dearly love to own one.
However as I do not have enough spare cash to allocate to something that is essentially a big boys toy, that sits in the garage most of the year. On top of this Areial for reasons I do understand and appreciate, do not sell the Atom in kit form ....
.... which precludes me the pleasure of building one as well as reducing the cost of owning one, thus Im left with seeking and alternative - step forward the MEV Rocket which is a self build, light weight, exo skeleton, mid engined, wind in your face, big boys toy for well under 10K.
No its not an Aerial Atom but it a car built along similar lines, that is much cheaper to own and can still provide the average driver with a great deal of driving ownership pleasure, ......
@NigelP21 The guys at ariel are NOT fans of replicas or copy's (or kit cars i assume, but i didn't talk to them about that) as you would imagine.
I would agree with the whole getting a replica because of not having enough money thing, but having been in an atom 300 and having been closely linked with the company, i would have to get the real thing or nothing at all, as i would feel as if i had betrayed ariel slightly if i got a replica
@rapidrory I don't think that the Rocket will pose any great threat or compertition to Ariel's Atom.
But rember the Aerial Atom is not really a true production car as large chunks such as the engine and drive train are lifted straight out the Honda Civic. Also Aerial are really a design and assembly facility and subcontract out most of the detailed manufacture, even the chassis manufacture/assy/wielding is outsourced.
Still its a dam fine car and if I had the money I'd have one.
shutup69er, I'm with Nigel. You clearly don't understand what he is saying. He posts the vid as an atom style kit car, so he is aware of the atom, and he has explained why he has one. If you can afford a 30+ grand toy thats ok, but realise most people can not. stop being a hater and relax
OK GO LOOK AT "BUICK GRAND NATIONALS" 1986 to 1987 OK SOME PUSHING LOW 8's with little mods stage one engines at that. handling is not a problem tires make the car it is already lowered 2 inches lol. Now as for the FIERO EXCUSE MY SPELLING my 3.8 supercharge engine that is wraped in a plasitc shell would smoke your whimpy 4 banger. Dont compare it to a ariel atom When its not even the same drivetrain.
Just because a car doesn't have the same drivetrain, doesn't mean you can't compare. Look at the Ultima GTR, it's compared to the McLaren all the time, but doesn't have BMW anything in it.. And, yes GNX's are fast cars, but, tires don't help, the body roll is horrid, I'd be scared around a rotary. And, sure the Fiero is a decent performer for it's class, but you stick a supercharged V-6 in anything, and it'll move. This is a great car because it flys with a 4cyl, and doesn't need a supercharger
Nice to see someone understands the advantages of weight. With a standard 1.8ltr Ford Zetec putting out 115BHP this will give you sub 5 sec 0~60mph and at 500kg with a low centre of gravity go nicely round the corner at the end of the straight, with exposed wheels it means you stand every chance of hitting every apex too. If you want a little more power why not put a standard 2.5lt Duratec from the Ford Focus ST MK2 at 225bhp giving super car like performance of 450BHP per Ton.
Jettarulz-pretty funny stuff there. So your Buick weighs about what 3500lbs?,that means you'll need about 600hp to touch one of these with a mostly stock focus 4cyl-what do you think will happen the 1st corner you come too? And a fiero(you can't even spell it for christs sake)give me a break-they suck at pretty much everything. You forget how many bargain basement parts GM stuck on these things, chevette front suspension, lousy truck motor-I think you get the idea.
BUICK? We'll all be laughing too hard to drive properly! And a "Feirro", what the HELL is that? - you mean a "Fiero"? You're going to "break out" a POS Pontiac that had an asmatic 4 cyl engine? NOW I'M LAUGHING!!!!
Not sure where your from, but if you can make it to the Stoneleigh Kit Car Show this year there should be a few examples on display on the MEV Owners stand to look at. Might help you make your mind up.
Well, the Atom is certainly NOT for the average consumer... Buick is for the average joe... you want a car that's as fast as the Atom, I don't want it to be the "average" car on the street.... driving would be insane.... SAdly, the cost of the atom has continued to increase - there was one on ebay for $90K... nice car, you'll likely never see another one pass you on the street....
Its a shame that some atom owners get so upset about a little healthy competition. Starting from £6k the Rocket is a car that enables the self build enthusiast to experience the joy of a true light weight, high performance car without braking the bank. better bag for your buck
@sirlonghair Actually, my boss has a 2.0l rocket putting out 191bhp, and on the road it's just as fast as his other car, which happens to be a Lambo 560-4. Having taken it on track, the Rocket eats Skylines, so there it would also leave the Lambo for dead.

Hope you are enjoying your kit Nigel :-)

This is great news. The atom is a nice car but at over 50-60k american they are very expensive for the average consumer.
I'd love to build a kit car if its affordable.
