You know, I spent a whole career in the Navy. And nowhere have I ever heard a reason that sailors wear white. Don't get me wrong. I loved my service dress whites. But, why white?? Call me a curious Sailor. =Stefan=
bert, that may be true for the common sailor, (I said may),But what about the officers? Heavan forbid that they wore the same stuff that we did!! (Bye the way, We never turned old sheets into uniforms),=Stefan=
Bye the way, Bert, I loved my whites. We were distincnt. When a soldioer orv a Marine was walking down the street, you asked what they were. when a sailor walked that street, There was no question. I'm a Sailor. And damned proud of it. As well, I am a "combat sailor". Do I have to tell you what that means???=Stefan=
Roberts, I live about 30 miles from Pearl, and the Arizona Memorial. With your permisson, I will, personally go and pay your respescts for you. I will also throw a flower lei(necklace) into the sea in your name. But, I must have your permission.=Stefan=
"I will, personally go and pay your respescts for you." You'd make an old man very happy. My Uncle is a Pearl Harbor survivor, I'll tell him about your offer and it will please him no end.
Tell me how the Mighty Mo is doing. I miss her terribly (she used to be mothballed up at Bremerton WA) but I'm sure a lot more people see her now.
I put some leis down on graves at the Seamen's Cemetery in Lahina today. Lot of veterans for a small town.
Rob, the "MO" is looking mighty magnificent!!!The way she looks, she looks like she is ready to break her moors, and put to sea where she belongs. And, damn, (sorry), I wan't one of her engine rooms!!! And, please, give your uncle my RESPECT!! I'll take care of that Monday. And I'll get a double carnation lei!! (Bye the way, in case you haven't figured it out, I'm an old Snipe. MM. ). =Stefan=

"And nowhere have I ever heard a reason that sailors wear white" Because sails were white, and old canvas sails were turned into uniforms?

"Do I have to tell you what that means" No. Was in Navy ROTC in the 70's. Still have my old BJM.
"Heavan forbid that they wore the same stuff that we did!! " There would have been some regulation against that, I'm sure.
"We never turned old sheets into uniforms" And I doubt you put tar in your hair; some old traditions have passed away.
Rolling down to old Maui this morning. Wish I could stop and pay my respects at Pearl, but not on this trip.
