Hmm...thanks. i ask because i found one in decent shape and have been thinking about buying it to use as a daily driver. crazy? i am mostly worried about operating costs.
Guys, stoich AFRs produce the hottest EGTs, as does retarded timing. EGTs fall off on either side of stoich. A lean mixture puts more head into the cylinder head as there is more flame dwell and less fuel cooling. Peace.
I found one of these as a wreck for practically free. Thinking about a project to fix it up. Even though i am not even old enough to drive yet xD It is standing on a concrete pier right behind the factory. Normally people dont go there, small gravel road for service work on stuff for the river it is located by. Found the thing by accident when i walked there (that gravel road ends at my house) Found the owner who (surprisingly) wasnt even a employee, he had just found the road . This gon be Fun!
Erm. It's running too lean! Re-jet the carb, fatten it up a bit, and you won't have to think about these matters at all. A 2-stroke Saab will happily run highway all day without constantly pumping the gas like you do; if properly set up!
This is one cool video I didn't know that you couldn't be on the gas at all times on a saab 2-Stroke or you would overheat the engine and burn a piston! but what does this engine red line at????
@donneysaab I'm sure it works for you but riding along as a passenger must feel like a taxicab ride in Cairo (for some unholy reason they either put their foot into it or let off completely, no in-between). If you go on a journey of any length it's not long before you want to strangle the driver. But each to his own. The Suzuki engine is a three cylinder, piston ported, roller/ball crankshaft engine so I'm not sure how far off the mark that is really.
The freewheel is to avoid the main bearings being starved of oil when slowing on a closed throttle. If the throttle is part open when decelerating, there is enough petroil still getting through to compensate for the reduced power being demanded from the engine. As schlusselmensch says, there is no reason why a non-tuned 2 stroke should not be able to take full bore driving all day. I've had a Wartburg, Planeta & several MZ's, which could all take flat out motoring without suffering.
@armours thanks for the input.........my goal is to help people drive old Saabs across the country or anywhere they wish.....all your points are well taken............happy stroking@.............tom
I'd suggest you bring down that EGT by fattening it up a bit on the main.
On the Rotax 2 stroke aircraft engines which run under continuous steady load, we like to see EGTs of a little less than 600C with an "impending doom" maximum of 650. So 1100F and 1200F
There's really no reason you can't run a stroker at steady high speed.
The Suzuki watercooled triples would crank off 75,000 miles or more running steady on the highway.
By the way, don't run premium fuels in your old 2 strokes.
@schlusselmensch True, the more expensive fuels had more lead (or lead substitute) to protect the valves is a four stroke, which is of course irrelevant in a Stinkwheel :-) My old strokers actually ran better & cooler on cheaper grades of petrol.
dude - I would follow you across country any time - in my 2004 9-5! :)

Off base question - what kind of fuel mileage do these things get?
Hohlederschatten 3 weeks ago
@Hohlederschatten
Normal "family car driving" would be in the 25-30 mpg range. With a "lead foot", it wants a lot more.....
In the 60,s my dad had a 95 (wagon), I know he got rid of it because he thought it was very thirsty. And yes, dad´s got a big lead foot.....
I never actually checked the gas milage on mine, it was to fun to drive:-)

A vespa has a forced cooling fan mounted on the cranckshaft in a turbine housing, it doesn't heat up like that .

My 1966 Yamaha YM-1 2 stroke air cooled twin runs all day at constant throttle. Then again, I know how to jet an engine.

How the heck did we keep all Our 2 stroke Saab´s running here in Sweden without all those guages!
Sorry to say, but this to me is just big time B-S!
Had a -66 3 carb 96 myself, drove it as hard as I could.
Guess what, never had any problems with it!
Two stroke Saab engines are not indistructable, but they were made for everyday use!
Free wheeling was for avoiding engine braking (better lubrication), saving gas and to make clutchless shifts, nothing else!
Keep the blue smoke flowing :-)

Whats the torque and hp?

this guy spent $500 on those gauges but was too stupid to spend $10 on some carb jets

free-wheel? How is this different from just shifting into neutral? or is this an automatic transmission? Either way, this is fascinating. I want one!

forget that "tutorial" and take the original setup. that fooling is not the key to a well running 2stroke. ..all the needless platitudes.

My DKW's have freewheeling device as well, I think you're running too lean. Those EGT's go pretty high

Also check ignition timing - they do tend to run a little hot if the ignition timing is off!
